In 2012, I voluntarily separated after 10 years of service.  I was so ready to get out that I skipped all the VA stuff.  I'd been seen for a few health issues (not mental) while I was in, and now those issues are resurfacing.  I know I have a few years post-sep to file and all that.  Anyone have any pointers on how to get the ball rolling on this?  TIA.

Find your local DAV chapter/VSO, and he/she will be able to help you with the proper paperwork.  That's probably the fastest route.

I recommend DAV also. They were very helpful.

As above---go find your Veteran Service Officer for your county.  They are paid to sign you up.

Not all VSO's are paid. Many are volunteers.

DAV, VFW, American Legion should all have VSO's in your area

FWIW, state VSO's can be hit or miss.  The two I talked to in Arkansas were worth a tad less than tits on a boar hog.

Make sure you have your DD214 member 4 copy and call your State's VA.  If you don't have this then request your DD214 member 4 copy from netrecs or the VA of the state you out processed without your character of service so the VA will grant you benefits.  Whenever moving to a new state - make sure the you get in touch with that states VA and submit your DD214 to them because the VA varies state and does not always share records.  Next if you had medical issues make sure you have all documentation from your medical / 201 file proving the issue is service related.  Good luck.

Now that I think about it, Ft. Bragg never sent my medical records to me after I separated.  I guess I'm gonna have to make some calls...

If I'm not mistaken I believe the Army sends all medical records straight to the VA now.  The DAV rep submitted the proper forms for me, and they sent my records to me, I think it took about 60 days.

You're not mistaken. All services send medrecs directly to the Veterans Administration. This occured when our records went digital, and were no longer kept on paper. It helps a lot when you need emergency care from a V.A. MedCenter. Your records from your first day of enlistment are available to them with the punch in of your name and last 4 digits of your ssn.

Sweet!  Thanks for the info!  Hopefully they went digital before 2012...

No service sends you your medical record. Each service "retires" it to whereever they keep them. it is the servicemembers responsibility to make his or her own copy prior to seperation.

They're good with mental health issues as well. No stigma. It's 2015 and time we put that shit behind us.
