He is graduating from basic tomorrow and apparently is planned to deploy not too darn long after.

I want to gift him some things for graduation that may be helpful to him during deployment. Is there anything I could give him that would help or that he may like? He is transport operator.

Not sure if this is the right forum for this type of question. I figured why not ask vets.

A knife he can count his life on. Benchmade, spyderco, or maybe something nicer.

I gave a friend my Gerber LMF II and he said it was a constant useful companion.

A kick ass tactical watch.

You're welcome.

Maybe a Leatherman Raptor.  Pretty common to see EMT shears stuck in molle slots. They are much better even though the weigh more.

(My son gave me one for my birthday. Awesome!)

An Emerson knife. I carried an Emerson Commander on both Iraq and Stan deployments, I used it all the time for various things.

he probably won't deploy...those are barracks rumors. At this point in his career he has absolutely no idea where he will even be stationed yet.

Knife and some sort of multitool are good recommendations.  However I would get a cheap one not an expensive one, same with watch.  Things get lost real easy, or borrowed and never returned.  I deployed with a $5 knife and a $10 multi tool.  Neither ever failed me or couldn't do what was asked of it.

On another note most of the smaller fobs and cops don't exist anymore, so he'll probably be on a huge base where he can find everything he needs.

This.

DS's tell everyone they will deploy the moment they get to their units and that they will all die.

But if you want to get him a nice graduation gift, then a good folding knife or Casio G Shock would be good.

Get him a knife in the $30-50 range.  Something of high enough quality that it will hold an edge and last a while but it won't break his heart if he loses or destroys it.

Also a spare wristwatch, identical to what he likes or already has.  I managed to destroy three watches in one tour.

Cool I'll get him a multitool, knife, and watch.

He said they needed drivers bad, especially with impending pull outs but of course, when you are first going in I'm sure they tell you all kinds of stuff. Worst case scenario, he has a new multitool, knife, and watch. Thanks again!

Everyone is a driver, for the most part. We had 92y driving in clips in RC south. I drove a gun truck. Is he a 88M?

This. He must still go to school. then that pesky thing of getting to his duty station. Maybe he rocks out of school, or gets hurt...

Yeah, he has no idea when he'll deploy, or even if he will.....

I deployed last year and didn't get one, just a seat belt cutter.

I was an 88M. He will probably get issued a knife (we got Benchmade Auto Stryker)...but who doesn't need more than one knife? We also got some crappy SOG multitool that broke after about a month. Things that might be handy...A laptop to stay in touch with home (if he doesn't have one already). A headlamp. My favorite was a cheap everready one that had both white and red lights. Also, driving gets pretty boring without some music...an MP3 player of some sort with an external speaker. (not headphones).

My recruiter was an 88M, and see a few in my unit now and then.  This is what their lives sound like when in the field / deployed:  1) Driving endlessly, tired as hell.  2) Sleeping all day with nothing to do.

Either get him something caffeine or nicotine related, or something sleep related.  Otherwise, I would recommend a wrist watch that syncs with an atomic clock, because you can use those to sync the time on a military radio with a encrypted fill.  But I'm not sure if Afghanistan receives a signal for those watches.

Hmmm.  I got both.  RFI must be arfcommed.

Never did get to cut a seatbelt with the damn thing either, although I cut a bunch of 550 cord and zipties with it.
