In 2003 I enlisted into the Army and during boot came down with the flu. Went to sick call and was given a methacholine challenge which is an asthma test. The test came up positive. I was given a uncharacterized discharge and sent home. Well, it is 2014 and I want to serve still. I went to a Navy recruiter and he said I'd get a waiver if I can have another methacholine challenge done. I did and it came up negative and the doctor administering the test said that the folks that did it ten years back screwed up big time.

I was originally scheduled to take this test back in early March but I came down with a common cold a week before on the end of February. The doctor told me that they cannot administer the test while I have the cold due to the chance of having a false positive. They had to wait six weeks; hence taking the test this past Friday. He said I never had asthma, have no symptoms of it what so ever, and that I have great lungs. I have sent the report off to the recruiter and he is going to process it up the chain of command.

Now, my question is. Since I clearly have paper work that proves I am not asthmatic and now I am wondering can I challenge the Army to have my RE code change as well as my separation code. What are my options?

RE-3

JFW - Erroneous enlistment; Medical condition disqualifying for military service, with no medical waiver approved.

That's what my DD-214 says yet I have never had asthma and now I have proof that I don't.

This man speaks the truth.

Get your evidence together along with a written statement from that doc, if possible, saying they falsely administered that first test.
Have your friends and family write up some sworn statements discussing your good nature and model citizenship, as well as never having any symptoms of asthma.
Send it all in and wait. Its going to take a long time.

The American Legion has a handy walkthrough guide about upgrading discharge and you may want to talk to a service officer for a hand- they won't help your file but they understand the forms and can give you tips.

Good luck!

Misdiagnosis by military docs...say it isn't so? I was told I was an epileptic and put on meds after falling out of my rack and hit my head on a phone. After 2 EEG's proving I was NOT epileptic, I still had to play the MEB game to stay in. Good luck, it's a helluva process.

Well, update for my process with the navy.

I submitted my packet. Recruiter said I have to submit DD Form 2708-2 and MEPS Form 680. I have attached a copy of the Methacholine Challenge that I just took which shows that I am asthma free. He said my packet has to go up the chain, get the docs to sign off on allowing me to go to MEPS for a physical,  then pass the physical at MEPS, then do the PRT (which is easy as hell for me), then have it all go before the Commander of the Recruit Depot and have him sign off for a waiver.

God help me! I really hope and pray that I get in.

Good old army medical, they typed me as AB-, my Surgery team last month typed me as AB+. not that big a difference, just a vertical line.....

the Army screwed up, not my private surgery team

Sucks you lost out on so much time from a stupid test
