I've already fired the yard guy...but, I need to know from all of you plant experts whether or not I can do anything to stop the damage and fix the bush.

It's a plain old Holly bush:

ETA: damage was caused by cutting it back too far.

Did he get some chemicals on it?

I'd cut the dying part way back and see if it will grow new shoots.

That's the weirdest goddamn holly bush I've ever seen....

ETA:  Seriously, why am I seeing whatever this is and not a holly bush?

I'm no expert but I've seen bushes to that up against a house where they stay in the shade all the time.

Holly bushes are damn near impossible to kill. You can cut them off at the ground and they will come back.

And also, don't ever try to dig up the roots, been there done that.

In Fl.  those type of holly bushes ( burfidied holly , spelling ?) grow well in full sun or in shade...I have planted thousands of them.

To much water can do that and it looks wet at the base of the plant.

eta...do you have a water  value above the area ?

How the hell did you manage to kill a holly bush?  I've been actively trying to kill mine for two or three years now and they keep coming back.  I've dug three feet below the surface and pulled up roots for 6 feet in every direction too.

It looks like a yaupon holly, not really a holly bush as you are used to seeing them.

Best thing to do is to cut them back to the ground and let them refresh. As they are trimmed over the years all of the vegetation in on the tips and when you have an oopsie like this it is hard to get them to grow back. You see the same thing with leucophyllums that people turn into hedges. By cutting it back to within 8-12" of the ground the plant will essentially start over...or die.

It's one of the reasons that I hate hedged plants.

How old are they?

Get a chain and a bro dozer and rip them out. Plant something else. Makes your house look dated.

I hated the 70's.

FPNI.

You have plants that grow 8-12 feet tall and 6-8 feet wide, and like so many others, you probably have several of them planted 1 1/2' apart and have been whacking them down to 4' tall for years.

Now you wonder why they are pissed.

Just keep cutting out the dead stuff until there is nothing left, at that time just buy another one as
it will help the economy.

I think they're about 15 yrs old. I'll cut the dead portion back and see if I can maybe transplant something to fill it in.
