Is it me or does the angle of the brass piece make it look like an entrance/exit wound that followed his skull?

I don't know.  I tend to make sure the gun is empty, then look down the barrel to make sure it's clear.  That's how I was taught from the time I started shooting at just a few years old, but then that's just me.

I was wondering the same thing. Thinking big entrance and small partial exit.

I thought the intent of the jag was so that you pushed the patch all the way through and the muzzle pulled it off on the withdraw so that you weren't dragging a dirty patch back through.

I've never ran a patch or brush through a barrel and lost a "jag"

I break down all of my cleaning stuff afterwards.

Never been unscrewing the rods and said "hmm where did that brush go? Oh well."

The closest I came to that was shooting a ramrod out of the barrel of my black powder gun.
To this day I don't know how I managed that one. The shot kicked like hell and I couldn't find my ramrod
anywhere after that.

Yup, kicked like a mule, and couldn't figure out how I missed the steel target ... until I went to load the next round.  D'oh!  Found the ramrod in the berm, 120 yards down range, and just a few MOA off of target.

Modern muzzle loaders? Seems like they are pretty forgiving.

Reproduction Penn long rifle flintlock.  I was shooting from a sitting position with shooting sticks, and the recoil rolled me onto my back.

If for no other reason than the self satisfaction that comes from seeing a shiny clean bore.

Looks pretty spectacular , hopefully after the guy has some brass plucked out and things pasted or stiched together he was fine .

Head wounds can be messy , better that he took the hit on his dome than the same hit in his eye.

Contenders are considered pretty stout , they are chambered for all sorts of high pressure cartridges but then again you can't fault them for  coming apart when the barrel is obstructed

If you are cleaning an older carbon steel barrel, and need to use an agressive copper remover, a boresnake is not your friend.

I surmise your comments are based on cleaning easy stuff, like chrome-plated M16 barrels.

I had a case split in a Springfield 1903 once, blowing hot gas back along the bolt raceway.  I was unhurt and wearing shooting glasses, thank goodness, but was pretty shook up by the event. Nothing like what this poor guy must've experienced, though.

It's amazing such a small cartridge could so completely destroy the rifle and have energy to spare to injure the shooter.  Wow.

Funny thing: people seem to react to stories like this and accidental/negligent discharge stories in one of two ways:

  • as a cautionary tale and opportunity to rededicate themselves to safe gun handling and shooting, or

  • as an opportunity to feel smug and superior and puff oneself up and say 'that could never happen to me!"

I have a suspicion about which attitude is more likely to lead to injury.

Honestly, Before I shoot any firearm, I inspect the barrel to make sure it is free of obstruction. It aint that hard to do folks. The only exception is my CC piece which I draw and shoot at the range as I have carried it just like a real personal defense situation.

pro-tip - A dental mirror is a GREAT way to inspect the bore without pointing the muzzle at your eyeball.

when I'm done cleaning, I stick the light from one of these into the chamber and look down the barrel.

I was looking for pieces of patch that may have torn off, never thought about a piece of the cleaning rod being in the barrel, that would be kinda difficult not to notice

I've never picked up a firearm and loaded it without checking the bore for obstructions, even if I think I was the last person to shoot it just a short time earlier.

That's how my dad taught me to do it.
