It's really just a window of opportunity issue, who has the best chance of challenging Merc in the next three years?

I'd put Ferrari at the bottom of that list since 1) They have the weakest PU, 2) Their aero department has long struggled with development and 3) They're beginning a restructuring.

RBR is probably in the best shape since they have the best chassis, proven ability to ace in season development and Renault seems to be systematically improving their PU.

McLaren is a wildcard because of Honda.

BTW, I think Alonso this year in the Williams would have several race wins and be in contention for the WDC.

I really don't understand why Alonso would leave Ferrari. What does Red Bull, Mclaren, Mercedes offer that Ferrari doesn't? IMO, he has nothing to gain switching to another team and Scuderia Ferrari would be morans by letting him go.

I would love to see Fernando sitting in Frank's lead car.  I think it would be a match made in heaven.

Another thing I keep reading is that Honda isn't impressed with either driver at McLaren, so we may see 2 new drivers there for 2015.

Hmmm... let me run with this for a second:

Alonso goes to McLaren... even if they continue to struggle, nobody can get more out of a shitty car than Alonso these days.

Vettel goes to Ferrari.... Vettel been warming up to the higher torque / lower downforce car the last few races.  Maybe Ferarri can get it's shit together with the motor in the off season....

Nico and Hamilton keep fighting tooth and nail...

Red Bull/Renault figures out the PU better in the off season, and Ricciardo keeps kicking ass, with a new teammate...

Next season has the potential to be outstanding.

Now that we're in FP3, SkyF1 is going nuts. The cars on track are basically and afterthought.

Although not confirmed by Ferrari, Horner and Marko have stated Vettel will be racing for Big Red.

McLaren and Ron Dennis are silent on the issue.

I've never seen a driver fall from grace with a team like Vettel.  Goes from being the indomitable force in the sport to slinking out of the team in one season.

The data RBR is looking at must tell them that Vettel's success was more due to the tech regime/car than his talent.  No team just lets a 4 Time WDC walk away to a competitor if they're convinced he's bringing something to the table.

RBR has no class.

They've never been all that classy.  But Vettel and his fans are hardly the ones to complain in that regard, given his various antics through the years.  His relationship with Webber was rife with petty comments and childish behavior.

I have no sympathy for Vettel - this year was his chance to put his doubters to rest and he's slinking out the door for a fatter paycheck and flashier company car.  He knew based on his performance this season that RBR was never going to pay him mega-$$$ so he bolted for the door.  And RBR was happy to take the buyout settlement.

I think the move is foolish for Vettel, but then, what the hell do I know?

I thought Hamilton was a fool for leaving McLaren too and look what happened.

The allure of being the #1 driver at Ferrari must be incredible, even if they're not on their game.

I'm a little bit surprised that McLaren would have Alonso back after the shit that went on there, but at the end of the day, Alonso is arguably the best all-around racer in the business at the moment.  He's also probably one of the best choices when you're trying to get up to speed quickly after making big changes (i.e Mercedes to Honda powerplant).

I think that stems from the fact that Helmut Marko pulls no punches. All fact.

I don't think that's true. Vettel put a Toro Rosso on top of the podium. He wouldn't be a PAID driver if he wasn't good. A bit of a slump or break? Maybe. Look at Alonso. He won 2 world championships and what, has he been in a slump since 2006? 2007 - 5th. 2008 - 9th. I think that when it comes to drivers like Alonso and Vettel it proves even more that Formula 1 is a team sport. Great drivers need the team to put them in a car that's capable of being on the front row.

Vettel was able to walk away due to an option in his contract as confirmed by Horner and Marko. He always said he wanted to drive for Big Red and it was clear that Big Red was f the mindset that they would only get better with major changes. New engineers and managers and now driver...I expect them to have a big 2015.

Agreed. I think these drivers may think they're in a slump. Think of it like this; you're having bad luck with ladies. What do you do? New haircut and try a new bar. Next thing you know there's a new lady every weekend. Same you but different scenery. There's probably a mental aspect about it as well. Look what it did for Hamilton.

Hell, it almost seems like a new sponsor/paintjob worked wonders for Williams. Sure there's more to it than that, but there is clearly a mental aspect.

As far as McLaren and Alonso, while not confirmed I think it's happening. It's been 7 years since the Alonso situation, and I bet Ron Dennis has had time to reflect and now asks himself what he would have done in Alonso's shoes. Dennis is a businessman and I bet he's over it and ready for some wins. Don't be surprised if Honda is pulling some strings, too.

FIA is going to FIA. Apparently it was proposed but declined. I hope it's crazy rainy but not so rainy the race is stopped.

2011 Canada was stopped but restarted and one of the best races ever.

2012 Malaysia was stopped but resumed.

2009 Malaysia race was stopped and not resumed, half points awarded. Let's not have that happen.

As people probably know by now I like the crazy stuff to happen. Sure it messes up fantasy predictions but it's fun.

That was the only race I missed that season.  My DVR fouled up and didn't record it.  I'm still sore about that one.

I'm the same way.  Rain sometimes leads to unexpected wins and podiums and can turn a championship on its ear.  I'm really hoping they get this one in and someone like Bottas or Massa or anyone but the Mercedes drivers can pull off a win.  Even Vettel.  It would be cool to see him deliver a win to his team on the same weekend he made his announcement.

We should set up a 'swear jar' for Shung.. $5 in it every time he says something nice about Seb next year.
I think it might be a good move for Seb though, a change in scenery helped Hamilton immensely, here's to hoping that the same thing happens.

So Mclaren's actually going to get Alonso? Any confirmation yet? I'm surprised Fernando is holding his nose to work for Ron Dennis.

Guess it MIGHT be different this time, as Dennis isn't sitting there at the pitwall, and I respect the hell out of Eric Boullier as a manager.. he made Renault/Lotus a contender for a couple of years.

The more I think about it, the more I can see the sense of it.

Next year was the last on Vettel's current deal at RBR.  Does anyone think that, based on his form vs. Ricciardo, that RBR was going to pay him the mega $$$ a 4X WDC would demand?

Plus, from what I've read, RBR is designing next year's car to continue the concept of this year's car (i.e. to suit Ricciardo's style over Vettel).  Which is only fair, considering how Ricciardo has delivered for them this year.

So, knowing that he was unlikely to see his form improve and likely to leave anyway, he exercises his escape clause to leave a year early.

I've read that things aren't going so well for RD at the moment.  Supposedly he got financial backing from some Gulf $$$ to oust MW and his failure to find a new title sponsor has weakened his hand.

What I've read is that Honda is coming back both as engine supplier AND title sponsor.  And they want Alonso in the car.

Wonder how much Russian money Kyvatt has to get his ass in the RBR seat.. I'm not seeing anything to make him seem like a better prospect than JEV.  Hell, after Singapore, I'm now a big JEV fan.
