This morning I read Hamilton signed with McLaren, in the afternoon I heard Alonso signed with McLaren. Maybe tonight Raikonnen will sign with McLaren. I wonder if they realize they only need two drivers? Read that too, but the site it came from I would never trust. Obviously you know that, but still funny. According to this there's a lot of things up in the air at McLaren at the moment: Link [There] would appear to be some attempted destabilisation of McLaren going on at a delicate moment in their history. This is not uncommon in F1, but the pattern here is unusual.
McLaren are about to start a new relationship with Honda and they desperately need to get out of the technical rut they have now been in for two years, with not a sniff of a victory. Last year was very poor by their standards and led to the departure of Martin Whitmarsh as CEO, but this year is arguably more embarrassing as they have had the best power unit in the field and yet have been outclassed by Williams, who had their worst season in 2013 and yet have turned it around spectacularly this year. While that is going on, the position of Dennis is in question as he has an option to buy shares from the Bahrainis by the end of 2014 but he needs to find fresh investment to do so. So far he hasn’t managed to find it. What happens next if he does not find it is open to debate. Some say he may find the Bahrainis and Ojjeh replacing him, others say that if the option expires, they just negotiate a new one. Time will tell. At the same time as all of the above, Fernando Alonso, who was double shuffled by Ferrari’s move for Vettel last week, has been negotiating a contract with McLaren for some time. Some sources say that it is signed, others say it’s not yet signed but it is close. Honda is desperate to get Alonso, but there are some suggestions that he is looking for a short commitment to keep his options open should Lewis Hamilton leave Mercedes either next year or for 2016. To counter that, Mercedes chairman Niki Lauda has told one media outlet that Alonso has already signed for McLaren. The games continue. |

If somehow Merc could ditch Hamilton, and bring-on Alonzo... I'd like that. He's much more likeable than Lewis and has been driving his ass off this year. |

View Quote I agree but don't think it's at all likely - what's happened the past month makes me believe that Merc is perfectly happy with Hamilton. IMO the best move for Alonso at this point is to take a one year deal with McLaren/Honda and keep his options open for 2016. He could then possibly be a stalking horse Merc uses to drive Hamilton's salary demands down (ala the way Williams played Mansell/Prost/Senna against one another when they were the dominant team). |

I think Gary Hartstein's Fromer F1 Doc's Blog post says it best. Before things get out of hand with knee-jerk reform, the laws on the books must be enforced first. I would hate to draw this comparison anywhere else but on a firearms-related board, but we as gun owners know this all too well every time a firearm is used in a tragedy we are the loudest yelling to enforce the laws that are already there. After Senna died in '94 there were chicanes placed EVERYWHERE. http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m8qyyiS4Sn1r4p1i7o1_1280.jpg I don't think anyone wants to see moves like that, not even drivers. I found this article to be interesting. I know someone mentioned it earlier about the FIA having control over the pit lane speed limiters while the cars are on track. At Le Mans this year they tried something similar to that in the local yellows only to avoid having the safety cars out for hours on end. It seemed to work well on an 8+ mile long track but I wonder how well it would work in F1 with much shorter tracks and lower lap times. Link Hope Bianchi pulls through Sounds good until there are electrical glitches and someone gets forced from 200 down to 50 while the guy behind him is running DRS. I'm not worried about that nearly as much as I am some poor bastard getting snap-oversteered off the track because his throttle chopped down to nothing in the wrong part of a corner. "A lone Marrusia will be run out of respect for their hurt driver." Yup. Only 1 car in Russia. Pure Class. I don't understand that to be honest. It seems like they are giving up a great opportunity for a young driver and not letting the rest of the team race, after they built and worked on the car. To me, it seems like a football team forfeiting their next game instead of playing their back up QB. Racing the car to the best of the team's ability would be the most respectful thing they could do for Bianch, in my opinion. |

Not to pooh-pooh their jesture... but they are mostly doing it because they are broke... they are also violating the hell out of their contract with FOM, which states that 2 cars must be run or they risk prize monies.. of which they could get quite a bit more than they usually do if they finish the season, ahead of Sauber, Lotus, and Caterham. So all in all NOT a good thing for Marussia. I seriously hope that Forza Rosa and Haas can field teams next year, else I have a feeling that it's not going to be a very large grid. |

I look at it that they don't feel complete as a team without their number 1 driver. I think it is respectful, and classy. I get the breech of contract, I get loss of a chance of points. But for one race, one week after losing their number 1 driver in a senseless accident--give the team a chance to respect their fallen in whatever way they wish. |

Marussia might have been better off specially marking up the car in tribute, and letting Rossi drive in Practice and Qualifying, then running one lap and parking the car. Still a great tribute, but gets Rossi some driving time and satisfies the contract.

FOM isn't dumb, I think if they came out and penalized Marussia for running one car, there would be quite a backlash. This is one instance where ignoring the contract would be more advantageous than enforcing the contract. |

Just found on the Judge:
Breaking News Engine Freeze rules abandoned Once again, the F1 strategy group appears to be tinkering with the rules of Formula 1. We are in an unprecedented era of F1 where regulations that usually remain stable for significant periods of time, are being altered almost ‘at whim’. Is it a co-incidence that this consistent meddling began almost as soon as the new F1 governance structures were introduced? Power Unit regulations are now set to be ‘unfrozen’ for 2015, with Mercedes alone opposing the idea. The F1 commission must now vote on the matter, though a bullish Christian Horner appears to think this will be a formality. WOOHOO!!!!! |

Well some people hit the pit pretty early, including Massa and Rosberg. There are some reports some drivers are burning too much fuel per lap and without a safety car they'll have to turn it down. |

There we go.
Rosberg reports tires (mediums) degrading after lap 1 stop. Hamilton says he's quite satisfied on his worn softs. JB stops for tires. Next stop...Podium? |
