The sound when on-board: I have never heard such a pitiful, flatulent, non-race car- like sound coming from an F1 vehicle. I really do hope it does sound better in person. I understand that these power plants are an engineering marvel and the way of the future, but Lawd help Me, I think an F1 car should make One's ears bleed due to excessive RPM's. The (Sad) Ol' Crew Chief I'm still gonna watch, dammit! View Quote ugh, I was so looking forward to this season, but by the end of practice last night , I think I actually caught the depressions..... |

I'm not willing to give up on the new cars yet. It's still brand-new tech and engineering. Plunging deep into the unknown with millions of dollars on the line is going to be a gradual process.
I don't think any of the teams have enough data to really make the most of the huge increases in electrical power and torque yet. And everyone is still scared to death of running out of fuel or blowing up 20% of the engines for the whole season. By mid-season, if the cars are still slow, I'll jump right on the bandwagon and bitch about the new regs with all of you. |

If you watch the Hamilton interview that I posted, it's pretty clear that the lack of pace (in comparison) is due to less down force and harder tires....not the power units. (He even comments that a combination of the turbo PU and last years cars would have been monsters) Yesterday, Toto Wolff mentioned (in the team principal press conference) that they will be able to equal last years times "in a few races"....which made Christian Horner raise an eyebrow in surprise. It is still very early days and teams are tiptoeing around scared of the power unit usage restrictions and the subsequent grid penalties. One thing is for certain. This type of racing (resources management) and this type of "quiet" power plant is top level racing going forward. |

I posted that video just to fan flames. I have no doubt these are just growing pains and in no time the cars will be up to speed. Imagine how people felt in 2005 after watching the 2004 cars! Bottas didn't exceed 11,500 RPM yesterday! http://youtu.be/EWCKjwnHXx0 I'm sure we'll be fine. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

We are kind of all focused on full tilt speed and pace, but the race(s) will be won with efficiency through resources management. Going to be a lot of "WTF!...I don't understand!" comments this season. |

If they could ditch the stupid rev limits and use as much fuel as they wanted I think these cars could be fucking rockets.
The overall fuel capacity is fine. I say they should keep that rule (maybe bump the limit a hair). What needs to go is the fuel flow limit. There's no point in revving passed 12k right now since there isn't enough fuel flow. Sure they would max them out in qualifying by revving up to the full 15k, but there are still rules in place to keep the cars from reaching the power levels of the 80's turbo cars (they have a maximum boost limit). They should remove the fuel flow limits and the DRS. Let the drivers decide when they make a pass. If a driver wants to risk running out of fuel to go for a pass let him make that decision. Here is a great clip from Lauda commenting on the DRS system:

View Quote This, as well as allowing unlimited amount of drivetrains. I went to the first race at Austin (which was my first race) two years ago and the thing that impressed me most about the whole affair was the sound and the vibration I felt as the cars went by. Truly impressive. Seeing these new cars makes me think experiences like that might be a thing of the past. The thing that absoultely annoys me the most is that a lot of the formula changes are done under the guise of reducing costs. I'm no expert but it seems to me that changing the regs like they have been do pretty much the exact opposite. |
They did a C63 vs V8 Supercar vs Coulthard in an old RBR car just then. Gave the C63 a handicap then a handicap for the V8 supercar then the RBR. Pointless but damn fun and damn cool. |
My predictions. At least five cars die, Hamilton will be the first blow up. Rosberg, Alonso, Bottas at the finish. Two cars will run out of fuel due to being short fueled. Top ten for Caterham.
New cars sound terrible. MotoGP sounds better than the new weed eater engines. Oh wait, that's insulting to weed eaters. |
No joke, Jules Bianchi has a serious chance at a points finish.
It pains me to do it, but I put Hamilton in the winners circle.
I don't have any Renault powered cars finishing in the top 10. I don't see the reliability there. It's sad to see the time difference between Alonso and Kimi. I suspect that if that trend continues, around Spa, Kimi will "get bored." |
Such a crap shoot on predicting the top 10.
Possibility of rain for qualy, reliability concerns, tire wear, etc. Even if it doesn't rain, somebody will bin it during qualifying. |

I like how the new cars move around and challenge the drivers more. I also like the fact reliability is an unknown for a lot of teams again. I hate the new noses and hate the new engines. I wish they could give the cars a respectable engine at least. Because I don't see them winning over a lot of new fans in the US with these. I don't expect it to ever be as popular as football/baseball but there were quite a few people who watched Rush and were impressed by the movie who could potentially become fans. And as we know there are tons of NASCAR fans who might check it out, but now instead of roaring V8s we have pussified eurotrash hybrids. At least that's how it will be seen, not so sure they're wrong. I want my V8s back. I want refueling back. I want tires that last more than 3/4 lap back. I want cars that don't have phallic objects on them back. Is that too much to ask? |

End of Q1, Kobyashi makes Q2 with Caterham!
Chilton, BIanchi, Gutierez, Ericsson, Grojean, and Maldoado all fail to make the cut. Maldonado with no time. |
