Gravel at Parabolica being replaced with asphalt. Apparently is was not for F1, but for motorcycles and to shorten safety car periods.

Been watching the 2009 season to get me through the summer break. Can Jenson hold on to win the WDC? Will Rubens finally come through? Will Vettel or Webber steel it? Exciting stuff.

Yeah, I'm of two minds on it... Will make it a LOT safer for the two wheelers, but F1 drivers get too much hand holding at the tracks as it is... and fast corners are less fun when they have minimal consequences.  Maybe temporary landmines in that area for the Monza GP?

Can't wait for the second half though.. The Spa and Monza races are awesome, and then I get Japan toward the end.

I've started watching 2004-2008 in the off season. The more I see Fernando Alonso the more amazing he is. I enjoyed the 06-09 season's most, F1 really needs to bring back refueling!

I've cataloged them over the years. I have an entire 6TB NAS devoted to just my F1 crap.   If you know the right places to look, you can find most of them.  I would tell you if I could, but I'm sure I would get my pee pee smacked.

And yes M4A1, Alonso is amazing.  I'm honestly convinced that he is one of the best F1 drivers of all time, he's definitely the best driver since the late 80's/early 90's when I started watching.. even over the likes of a Mansell, Prost, Senna, Schumacher, any of the the greats.. the guy's amount of car control, even in a crap car, is amazing. I had such high hopes for him when I heard he was driving for Ferrari in 2010, he deserved another chance after decisively winning two championships, then being shit on by Mclaren, and Renault then being a shadow of their former selves.  I hope Maranello gets it's fucking thumb out next year.

Ricciardo might end up being close to Alonso in pure natural talent, we shall see, but that kid has amazed me this year too.. especially last race.

The high impact zones in F1 are already well covered by properly constructed tire barriers.  "Safer barriers" would be cost prohibitive to install in most tracks, and their best use is really on ovals.

The FIA fucked Renault that year since they came up with a similar DD and were told 'No dice'.  Then Ross basically strong-armed them by threatening to quit when they were short of teams so they came up with some silly reason to allow it.

Not one of the FIA's best moments.  The whole 2009 - 2013 era of trick aero devices wore thin pretty quickly.

Alonso really is an amazing pure talent.  I haven't gone back and watched past seasons, but I recall being massively impressed at his performances in the Renault.  I was a big Shumi and Ferrari fan, also a RAI fan, so he gave me headaches, but he really is a gifted driver.

I'll never forget him holding off Schumi in Imola 2005. Schumacher was all over him with like 10 laps to go and in a much faster car. It was almost a foregone conclusion that Schumacher was going to pass him but Alonso always had his car in the right spot. It was the widest Renault I've ever seen, amazing drive.

face it, the only real reason the season is 'getting better' is a couple failures on mercs part and the questionable at best banning of FRICS

Vettel being humbled is nice though, as is Williams speed.  would like to see Ferrari do something though (Montezemolo stepped down apparently)

Why would they kill the goose that continues to lay them the golden eggs? Enzo founded the company to go racing, and only built road cars to supplement that.  Even if Ferrari is shit, like right now, they are, bar none, the most popular F1 team in the world and they easily take in more than they spend.  Plus they have a fairly large stake in it.. why walk out on an investment just because things aren't going your way at the moment? You're still making money, and you have probably the best driver in the field in your car.

Luca just likes to run his mouth from time to time, like most Italians, but he's a damn good businessman that saved the company from itself.

I still think they just need to hire a German to run the F1 side, worked before.

After dominating f1 around 2000, Ferrari, bought into the argument that f1 was getting boring etc etc and just accepted too many rules that were bound to put them in big trouble... They should never have.

It's only fair that now, after half a decade of non success, they try to steer rules their way again

After dominating f1 around 2000, Ferrari, bought into the argument that f1 was getting boring etc etc and just accepted too many rules that were bound to put them in big trouble... They should never have.
It's only fair that now, after half a decade of non success, they try to steer rules their way again

So is Ferrari leaving F1, or are they just posturing to allow them to change the rules again?

I'm still trying to understand how early 2000's F1 was boring in anyone's mind... because Ferrari dominated for a couple of years and eeked it out the other few because Mclaren had no concept of reliablity?  I'm so tired of hearing about how boring F1 was during the Schumacher era, when most of the fucktards that say it were nothing more than an itch in their daddies' pants at the time.
I say fuck it.. roll the rules back entirely to that time, except the stupid grooved tires. I wanna see refueling rigs in the pits, I wanna see two tire manufacturers, I wanna hear a big ass V-10 howling like a horny angel.

ETA: I'm hoping the turbos go away after a few years like they did last time.. Maybe there's hope?

I don't think you'll see the current stupidity go away until Bernie goes away.  Sadly I don't think there will be much of a sport left when he's done.

Why do people keep repeating this?  Bernie was no fan of the engine reg change.  It was the manufacturers that pushed that one, mainly Mercedes and Renault.

Bernie is far from the biggest problem F1 has.  I worry more about the day he's gone and the sport potentially goes the way of CART.

Renault laid down an ultimatum that if there wasn't more done to make the engine technology greener they would leave the sport. Ironically they proceeded to develop an absolute piece of shit engine. The concept of hybrid turbo charged V-6 engines was not bad, however the execution has been a bit lack luster. While the power delivery is much better than last time they sound like shit.

Bernie is the least of the problems that F1 has.

Agreed.  The fuel-flow limit is the biggest problem, IMHO.  The engines are running about 4,000 RPMs below what they were designed to do, and about 9,000 below what they probably could do.

The sound would be a hell of a lot better, power would be incredible, and fuel-use strategy would really come into play.
