Elena Eleonora Interesting fact about the Elena. When they built it, they used Herreshoff's plans for the Westward. They used computer models to try to improve the sail design, but were unable to improve it. 100 years of experience and technology and they couldn't design it better than he did. That was one brilliant man. Elena’s original rigging plan, as drawn by Herreshoff in 1911, has been tested through a purpose-made computer program, for Brasker masts and spars. Surprisingly the results confirmed that despite nearly 100 years of developments in rigging design the Wizard of Bristol’s original concept could not be improved upon in both strength and lightness. After calculating hundreds of situations in every conceivable weather circumstance and applying those circumstances to every possible sail combination, the modeling results could only substantiate but not improve on his calculations. Therefore all the spars will be built to Herreshoff ’s original specifications. http://www.superyachttimes.com/editorial/3/article/id/3397 |

Pretty.
Still a sailboat though. For the most part ......people on sailboats are the hippies of the sea. Fuck a sailboat! |

I know nothing about boats and even less about sailing ships . . . . and it's a shame as I have always thought they were cool as hell .
Those are absolutely gorgeous |

I love the look of them and would like to experience what they are like.... however... Having almost drowned a couple of times, I have a healthy respect for the sea and keep myself firmly planted on solid ground. |

A Herreshoff is pretty when in the water; lots of other sailboats are, too. They look like hell out of the water. |

Quoted: For the most part ......people on sailboats are the hippies of the sea. Fuck a sailboat! Quite the opposite. Having been a boat owner (currently own a 48' Viking) for over 30 yrs, I find sail owners to be much better mariners and cruisers than powerboaters will ever be. Any snot nosed brat, drunk or moron can go out, buy a powerboat, and be up and running in less than 24 hrs without having a clue as to what they're doing. Most ignore rules, drive like moron, have no regard for their fellow boaters and haven't the foggiest as to the rule of the road on the water. Sail owner, on the other hand, are by far quite the opposite. They are much more professional on the water, have excellent navigation skills and are much more respectful of the rules on the water....................... Powerboaters need only the level of intelligence to turn a key and not much more. Sailors need to learn the winds in order to sail. Night and day difference... |

Wow. Sailboats on the otherhand, go because you set the sail and catch the wind with only the sound of the water slapping the sides of the hull. God made the wind and there is a wonderful feel of peace and accomplishment at speeding along the water because you caught it just right. |

Most sail boaters even the hippies) have to be competent... it aint easy gettin those things of a bar......A lesson you only learn once with a sail boat......However.....They complain about the cost of fuel and dockage, steal your water and toilet paper, steal power, take anything not bolted down and smell middle earth and death mixed together...... Fuck a sail boat.... |

Nathanael Herreshoff's sailboat designs are the prettiest man made objects ever built (boat porn) Nope, the J Class Cup defenders designed by Starling Burgess. http://i189.photobucket.com/albums/z120/planejanel/j_int1.jpg If you don't agree this is raw sex, then you just don't know what sex is. Jane Note: Photos of J-Boats are kind of scarce. This is picture of the replica (launched in 2012) of the 1934 defender, Shamrock. On my bucket list is to be a grinder on a rig like that. |

I don't care for sailboats (or powerboats really) at all, and I would not be willing to go out on the open ocean in a sailboat for all the tea in China.
But, I agree that's a thing of beauty. |

I like sailboats. Beautiful designs. The guys on them are funny as hell though. Most treat them as a floating RV and never put the sails up, content to putter around with the kicker motor.
(I've had one flag me down to borrow gas before) My sister is part of this crowd, sails a 32' Beneteau. She took ONE trip offshore in a friend's rig, 8 people aboard. They were going to sail from Galveston to Mexico and back. They all got so damn seasick they turned back after 6 hours. Went about 11 miles all told. |

His designs are the very definition of elegance. Absolutely stunning.
Thank you for posting those photos. In the powerboat business it's easy to forget how breathtaking classic sailboats can be. |

While I can't argue with your above assessment of some sailors, I've had my run-ins with those types as well - it's not the boat that is the cause of the problem. I imagine they're thieving assholes ashore as well. As far as your reply , goes - well, you can never really tell who's done what on the internet. |

I clicked expecting some modernish nightmare.
That's awesome though. |
