The kind of drive and determination to make it to the Olympics at all will pretty much eliminate the childishness in an athlete, and promote personal responsibility.

You know, I agree. Maybe if we brainstorm a bit we could get down to the critical points in society that make us seek to humor and ridicule athletes for performances that far exceed our own capabilities.
