Yeah, the point of a grounding wire is not to stick it in dirt.  It's to GROUND it, so that it has somewhere to discharge.

I guess the logic was, "well, dirt is dirt, so if I stick it in a bucket of dirt, it's dirt, right?"  Well, it's not the fact that it's dirt, it's what the dirt DOES that's the point.

When I first glanced at the pic I didn't see anything obviously funny...



then ...  wait is that a bucket with dirt in it?  and a rod in the dirt?  and the generator wired to it?...  Face palm.



It's one of those things that only people who work with electronics on a regular basis get instantly.  The rest of us take a little bit to get it.  And then there are people who have no idea what a ground wire even is... these people are probably responsible for the picture...

If I were to guess, a dumbshit supvervisor (butterbar equivalent) told them they had to ground the generator, but wouldn't let them ground to the steel for some reason.
