Another crappy opening day, weather wise
Sat the temp reached the 60s then in the afternoon the wind started blowing 20MPH and the rain started falling hard |

I woke up at 5am to go enjoy hunting in the first snow. The first thing I can hear Is the howling of the wind. Hunting in the first snow is supposed to be peaceful and beautiful, when the deer don't realize that their camouflage is gone. I can't hunt in this! The snow is knee high and visibility is shit.
Which is why I rolled over until 8am.  . Coffee is brewing, I'm off for two weeks. I guess I work on the honeydew list today, and try again tomorrow.

I have traded hunting for plowing the driveway. With snow falling and wind drifting everywhere it doesn't take long before the driveway needs to be re-plowed
Saw 4 does and fawns running at top speed near dusk yesterday. I saw them from the warmth of my kitchen 
No use going out until this blizzard dies and the wind goes below 10 MPW. That would be this coming Wed AM hunt in the snow

I saw a mouse on Saturday. I was temped to see if I could harvest him with my pistol. I figure hell, anybody can hit a big fat deer.
Sunday and today I spent about an hour and a half outside, screw that its nasty here. |

I've been seeing a ton of deer the past few days. Passed on a few little bucks. Snow is asshole deep today and didn't hunt this afternoon. I'm hoping I can get the truck out back for tomorrow morning. Might just have to drive and hunt off the tractor.
Shot this "little" fawn eater on Saturday.

I took yesterday off from hunting. Went back out this morning to the same stand where I've been having such good luck seeing deer. It paid off at about 9:30.....
This is turning out to be my most successful deer season ever. |

It started snowing here Friday night at 9pm and just stopped now for the first time. (2:30 Tuesday) Normally this wouldn't be a big deal but my truck is broke down so I had to take the car. I've spent the day getting it free. I'm out of kero so I will have no heat if I stay, I've tried "waiting it out" since it started but it looks like it will be all week. I figure I've got one shot getting down off the hill, better that I use it to go home than going to town for fuel.
Usually sit/hunt/waste the first two days basically in the front yard. Then durring the week I venture into state land. But it's a hump and a half when there's NOT a foot or more of snow on the ground. Oh well, I got one day in hhe woods, sort of. This sucks.

The NYHTF Christmas get together scheduled on the 3rd of December has been rescheduled to a new location. It's somewhere in 8N. Someone here can make a bunch of venison chili.

Hunted a small piece of property that my father in law owns on the south end of Owasco Lake and he pushed a nice sized doe to me at about 8:15 this morning; toughest deer I may have ever harvested.
We were hunting the side of a hill and I was sitting over a gully when she came on a B Line directly at me. I put my crosshairs between her shoulders (brisket) at about 40 yards straight on and squeezed off a round. She never flinched, whimpered, slowed down and kept the same line down the gully and up again appearing now 30 yards uphill to my left. She slowed down and I got off another round which dropped her temporarily to the ground but she stood up and was back on her feet a few seconds later when I fired the 3rd and final round which finally put her down. The first shot (which I had assumed that I missed) had hit her directly where I had aimed leaving a 6" hole in her chest. The second entered and exited just behind her shoulder and the third round first found its way through a 4" maple and then again hit behind her left shoulder and cleanly out the other side; a total of (3) rounds of 30-06 180 grain SST and she still made it 60-80 yards on the hoof, pretty impressive

No luck thus far out here in lima NY... Had a halfway decent 8 point trot in this morning, however it appeared to be his first rack.. This deer was no bigger than a yearling sporting some nice head gear, so I left him to pass his genes.. Had a shot nice buck tonight at....400-500 yards, but I he wouldnt hold still enough for me to get a correct range estimate, that with the failing light the slight wind, I just watched him through my scope until the light faded..
So far this has been the worst season I have seen in years.. Late rut, toppled with a freak snowstorm, and the major drought in the summer had made for a very interesting season..

And, while we can use rifles around here, if you saw the land I hunt, I have no shots over 100 yards anyway so it's not much of an advantage... |

Last year was the quietest I've heard in 30+ years by two or three times. Warm opening day ruined it for me. I was just wasting the day in a bad spot. I did something I'd never done before, set up a blind with a comfortable chair inside. That combined with the warm weather mean I spent as much time asleep as I did awake! I did spend more hours in the woods than any opening day ever, but I don't know if it counts if your eyes are closed.

Spent 5 days in the woods at my Uncle's place in Otsego Co. and saw NO deer at all. Had plenty of tracks in the snow and deer on the game cameras but they went nocturnal after opening day. Before gun season my Uncle was seeing tons of deer and some nice bucks, very strange.

Soon as the guns start going off bam, the deer go underground... Been 10 days since Ive seen a deer worth shooting.. Deer spend there entire lives surviving in the wild, when something gets fucky they key in rather quickly and adapt... This is why old timers started doing deer drives.. At this point in time, you're very unlikely to see a deer during daylight hours unless you move them or something else does.. |

Right over the property line, through the thin tree line, looking right at me. It got spooked a little, but not by me, so I knew a buck was folliwing it close. Sure enough a nice buck came down the hill slowly. It was still on the other property, and through trees, so I wasn't exactly able to shoot. Probably would have if it crossed over. It ended up going behind a small clump of trees. I waited 5 minutes, and kept my crosshairs trained...but it never came out behind the clump of trees...I think it knew I was there. Anyway, saw some fun stuff...but didn't pull the trigger.
