subject line sort of sums it up.

what are you other NJ'ers hanging off the front of your AR's?

for example, i was looking at the MSTN "Quiet Compensator" ("QC"),
www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=7&f=25&t=219745
but i understand that it is not BATF approved as a
"brake only", and therefore is not NJ legal.  (???)

thanks for any suggestions on NJ legal AR muzzle brakes.

I had Adco thread and weld on the Wilson brake. Looks just like the standard birdcage but the front is closed.

Good question. AFAIK the NJSP does not have a list of approved brakes.

Mike

P.S. I run a Rock River.

You can have this but it has to go on the end of a 16" barrel - won't make a 14.5" meet the minimum 16" requirement.  That's the issue with BATF, nothing about being a "brake only".

you are saying that i could put this brake on a 16" bbl in NJ, even though it has not been approved (or whatever) by the BATF as a brake only?  i'd *really* like to know what parts of NJ law leads you to this conclusion, since that is the brake i really want.  note that wes@MSTN states that it is not BATF approved in his thread hotlinked above.  is it the fact that the exit aperture is approximately the same dia as the bullet?  versus on a flash hider, where the exit aperture is much larger?

in contrast, a brake such as the following
egw-guns.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=57&products_id=93
which includes these statements in the description

- It is a comp by BATF rules, we have the letter.
- It is Post ban legal as per our letter.

a bigger selection here, but you'd have to look up the BATF status of each:

again, thanks for any help in sorting out this brake/compensator confusion.

That MSTN "brake" sure looks like a brake to me. I'd like to know who  would consider it a flash hider??? The front is closed up properly and it has holes and cuts in the sides. BATF approval or not, it sure is a brake to me and NOT a flash hider.
Legal if permanently attatched to a 16" or 20" barrel.

Does the ATFE have any concern with what is a brake and what is a flash hider any more?  The Federal Ban is over.  What's allowed on the end of the barrel now resides with the state (except for suppressors and even the state has the last say in this one too!).

thanks

The NJAWB say's flash hiders are an "evil feature".  Just because the Federal ban expired, the NJ ban hasen't.   Your only allowed one "evil feature" per rifle. Are you going to give up the pistol grip?

That's the problem. AFAIK the NJSP, and the AGs office, do not have a list of approved brakes or methods of attachment. The ATF did test several brakes during the ban to determine if they were brakes or flash hiders. If the manufactures have letters from the ATF its a plus. Otherwise you need to do a Freedom of Information Act inquiry with the ATF to determine if they tested the brake you are interested in. It sure isn't easy.
