The List: The Top 50 Barbecue Joints in Texas

50 listed, though they only rank the top 10.  A few surprises in the rankings with a few additions and some absences.

10. Truth BBQ- Brenham,TX
9. Evil Mae's Pit Barbecue- Wolforth,TX
8. Micklewait's Craft Meats- Austin, TX
7. Corkscrew BBQ- Spring,TX
6. Tejas Chocolate Craftory- Tomball,TX
5. Louie Mueller BBQ- Taylor,TX
4. Bodacious Bar-B-Q-Longview,TX
3. Cattleack Barbeque-Dallas,TX
2. Franklin BBQ-Austin,TX
1. Snow's BBQ-Lexington,TX

For me a big shock seeing Pecan Lodge completely fall out of the top 10--I've been more times than I can count and for taste and consistency it's my #1 spot in Dallas.  Just heard about Cattleack a few months back, but have already been numerous times--they took over my personal number two spot in Dallas.  They have great food, but something in their rub doesn't agree with my taste buds as well as others.  Big shock seeing Bodacious on the list and especially at #4.  When I first moved out to ETX a place called Carter's was supposed to be the best in Longview; tried it once and it was so bad I never ate BBQ out here again.  Supposedly they are under new ownership now and I've seen a few pictures they've posted lately as well as some pictures of a collaboration they did with Meat Church (pork belly burnt end boudin) and it looked lights out so I'll have to give it a try.

It's all subjective.  Cooper's is on the list which I really don't care for but Opie's in Spicewood (one of my favorites) is not.

It's Ok, but not worth the $60+ we paid for my wife and I to each have a 3 meat combination plate, water and tea!

I have had a lot better BBQ.
It is real trendy though and everyone brags on it.
I think most folks today were raised on take out and box mixes by their working single mothers and don't know what real food tastes like.
The above was not aimed at Freakinout, he is here so obviously he has good taste!

That's one reason the places in Lockhart do not appeal to me.

You go in spend a bunch of money and get sub par barbq.  Living on the name and charging for it.

One of the best places around here is vinciks in East Bernard

A beef and sausage plate is like 10 or 11 bucks and Grab a drink out of the cooler and a kolache for a little more.

Working folks stop in to eat and you actually get sides and the whole deal.

They have been in the top 50 before and they do the same thing day after day.

Reasonable  and good

Another near Houston outside Richmond is The swinging door.
It has gotten a little more pricey over the years but day in day out consistently good bbq

I'll vouch for Bodacious. It is the Mobberly location ONLY, it is different from all the others entirely. The menu is different, meat is superb quality. They have specials every so often, today they had beef ribs.

And yes, it is amazing BBQ, on par with the best in this state. I've had most of the list, and while I would never try to rank them, the Mobberly Bodacious is high up there where quality is concerned. Most of the time there is no line or just a few people in front of you, but those days may be over after this magazine ranking.

Carter's has always been nasty to me. It's just like the bodacious chains and typical of old east-Texas style bbq (shit.) Things are getting much better around here these days, with Stanley's, Riverport, and the Mobberly Bodacious.

I still haven't made it to Snow's. Guess its time to make the trip.

Us and a group of our friends hit Snows at least once a year for the last few. It's worth it.

Had Truth BBQ in Brenham a couple of months ago, seemed solid.  Have always heard good things about corkscrew, just haven't ventured over to that part of town in a long while.

I'm originally from Brenham. Feel ashamed i haven't had truth bbq yet. I used to go there a few yrs ago when somebody else owned it. They had $1 sliced bbq sandwiches. I kinda feel bad for Nathans and LJ's  (both of which are also in Brenham) but they priced there self out of the market. Old town brenham mites will still go there but when the avg chopped sandwich is $11 and full of fat why would you?

Locally I have had CJ's in College station and Southside market in Elgin. I've heard really good things about a place in Somerville called Moe's bbq. So that might be worth checking out as well.

See, I don't care for Opie's much at all. I work near Spicewood almost every day and have had Opie's plenty of times. Just doesn't do it for me. Their sauce is wack. But their spicy cream corn is bad ass.

You're definitely right about it being subjective.

We hit #6 Tejas Chocolate Craftery (& BBQ) in Tomball last week for lunch.

It was fantastic, had the  moist brisket and you could cut it with a plastic fork.

Great flavor served hot.

I will be back.

Will try Corkscrew soon too.

A friend of mine who lives in Spicewood feels the same about Opie's as you.  For me, sauce is mostly irrelevant.  If the BBQ is good, you shouldn't need it.  I like Opie's although it might not make my top 10 either.  It is indeed subjective and it isn't in my opinion necessarily a "right or wrong" kind of thing.  For example, some places I love their brisket...  but not their sausage.  While brisket is my favorite BBQ meat (hey, this IS Texas, right?) I also like a little variety...  sometimes pork ribs, sometimes beef ribs...  almost never turkey or chicken, but if that's all there is I've been known to eat it.

And even for say, brisket...  some people like a spicier rub...  some like a fattier cut...  not everyone agrees on what "best" is.  I've judged a few BBQ contests over the years and it wouldn't be interesting if it weren't subjective...  And no, I never want to judge chicken again...  nor beans...  Done those way too many times because they are usually short on judges for those categories...  Judged ribs last time I was a judge...  it was fun, although I was disappointed all the spots for brisket and sausage were taken already...  Alas.

So anyway some people are going to like one place or another more or less than others...

I've even known people who profess that what I consider "fast food BBQ" like Rudy's or Bill Miller was their favorite, although I often suspect such people haven't tried any of the better places.  I've personally been pretty disappointed at Bill Miller's a few times (greasy sausage and dry brisket and meh at best sides), but Rudy's is O.K. if you aren't close to anywhere good, the good places are all sold out or closed already or you are in a big hurry or something...  I guess maybe that is damning by faint praise though.

Carter's is so horrifically bad (their best item was boudin which was decent)--I didn't touch BBQ in east TX for 2 years after my experience there and it's my favorite type of food.  I'll have to try the Mobberly Bodacious soon...maybe this week since I don't have power anyway and can't cook.

Worst Texas BBQ if you can call it that came from the Exxon across from Buc-ee's in Madisonville. They had a small restaurant with the store. The pulled brisket came from a crock pot with no seasoning and was tough as beef jerky. So basically you got a hamburger bun,Some beef jerky and some knockoff brand bbq sauce. Sadly the place burned down. Crappy food or not i hate to see anyone lose their business.

ETA: Texas Style BBQ restaurant at the Jif-E Mart Exxon in Madisonville.

Sometimes the old adage "there's no accounting for taste" just fits...

Up where my parents live in the summer (they winter down in the Rio Grande Valley) there is a "bbq" place called "Hickory Park", and I hessitate to call it BBQ because they...  and I $#!+ you not...  "vacuum braise" their meat as a shortcut to long smoking it...  To start with they are more or less Kansas City style BBQ...  which I don't care for to begin with (too damn sugary) and all the flavor comes from their sauce...  Actually I shouldn't say "their" sauce...  since a trip around back you find that they use Cattleman's brand from French's Food Service division all the stacks of empty 5 gallon buckets so labeled.  Cattleman's is cheap generic crap that is mostly all molasses and tomato sauce.  They sell the stuff at Sam's Club but I would not recommend it.   anyway...  people up there rave about how great it is...  but I think it is really because there aren't any good BBQ places around anywhere near there so people have no idea what good BBQ is.  They do get huge crowds, and the place seats like 450 people...  My opinion is you really can't consistently make quality BBQ on that kind of scale, which is why they ruin it with shortcuts.  Sadly when I was a little kid they had a small place on the poor side of that town that seated 60, and they actually smoked their meat slow.  They weren't bad back then if you like KC BBQ.  I didn't know any better when I was a little kid so forgive me.  The best thing on their menu if you ask me...  the ice cream.  They do that fairly well.

Here in east Texas, we are (or were) famous for grey squares of brisket. Most people say they don't like brisket after eating that dry grey shit, so they chop the hell out of it and drench it with sauce. That eventually morphed into a uniquely east Texan thing called Sloppy Joe, which is all the scrapped and leftover bbq chopped up and heavily sauced. It's not like what most people call a sloppy joe.

When that is all that's available, people tend to think its good like you said. Nowadays, we have better Q.

That sounds like the one time growing up my mom tried to make a brisket...  still makes me sick to my stomach.  I never thought that brisket could be good until I first tried Texas BBQ.  The town I grew up in a guy moved up from Texas when I was in college and started a BBQ restaurant...  I have to admit it probably would be only average BBQ by the standards around here...  but compared to that sugary oversauced KC style crap that is common around there, it was great.  Sadly that guy died and although his family tried to carry on for a few years after that it was never the same and eventually they closed up.  I didn't have good BBQ again until I moved to central Texas.

La BBQ should definitely be on there. Been there twice and it was right up there with Franklin.

The last time I went, my buddy ate an entire pound of brisket, a sausage, and about 5-6 pieces of bread.

Locally I have had CJ's in College station and Southside market in Elgin. I've heard really good things about a place in Somerville called Moe's bbq. So that might be worth checking out as well.

I'm not a fan of C&J. I grew up in Taylor, so it's no secret where my heart is, lol. Locally I like Fargo. Blue Moon isn't bad, but not worth the drive.

Your average liberal tried to become a vegetarian at one point in his/her life, but failed - and hates him/herself for not succeeding.

Texas Monthly doing an article on the best barbecue is kind of like Catholic Digest doing an article on the top 50 abortion clinics.

As someone who lives in Pearland, I see huge lines at Killens BBQ all the time. The. I laugh and drive down the road to Central Texas BBQ. It's not the greatest of all time but I really like it. It's consistent.

I went to Centrail TX once, it was awful. Killen's is fantastic though, I went yesterday and stood in line and had 4 free beers while I waited

Mike Anderson's. I have not been there for a long time. Last time it was still "Anderson's" in fact.

Let me guess, you can't wait for your food?  The lines are long, but they do move somewhat quick.  The way I look at it is, if it's good, it's going to have a line.  If the line thing is not for you, you can also look at it as going into a restaurant, then waiting to get service, then waiting for your drink then waiting for your food.  In all, about the same amount of wait time.

On the list, one place I would not go back is to Gatlins.  The service just sucks.  You order your food and it still takes them 15-20 minutes to deliver your food.  Really?  It's BBQ, it's all premade food.  That is the only BBQ place I go to where I do not get instant service after waiting all that time.  I have called in orders in before hand too and still had to wait.  They had none of the order done before we got there.  The food is good though.  Unless they change the way they serve people, I will not be going back.

List is basically bogus. DFW area has no mention of Jambo's in Rendon or Tony DeMaria’s in Waco.
