Actually I'm looking at 45 Win Mag.....

.458 SOCOM has almost twice the energy of a .45 WinMag, as does the .50 Beowulf (my choice when I lived in AK) and .450 Bushmaster, and all typically use heavier bullets.

And the 458 Socom is proven on bears. I don't remember which member here it was (maybe Kodan?) that uses one down on Kodiak or Sitka. Never did find out how the billets I shipped him years ago worked out.

I am planning on doing a .458 SOCOM SBR upper for bear protection this summer.

I would rather have 350 grains at 1800 as a min.

I've killed many bears and moose with my 458 socom.  It works.

If memory serves I'm getting 2150 with hornady 250 gr GMX and 1950 with 300 gr barnes Tipped TSX.

I was thinking a .45 Raptor sounds fun.

I haven't heard of that one.  What's it based off of, or is it a completely new thing?

460 S&W with the rim turned down to fit a AR10 bolt. You can use 460 smith dies and load data which is nice since it all exists already. The extra capacity using an AR10 type rifle should turn out to equal extra oomph.

Okay, that sounds pretty damn awesome.  I just looked up the ballistics and good fucking god.  From a 160gr Barnes Tac-X to their 325gr Buster, you're looking a solid 3000 to 3300 ft/lbs of energy at the muzzle.  That is freaking insane

A long time friend stopped a really pissed of Brown Sow, with a 10mm Glock..
just a few months ago, south side of Kachemak bay. Just dropping the bear, he  tripped, fell backward, and sent the last round of 10mm through his foot. Might have been 6 or 7 hour skiff ride back to town, he's a tough bastard.

IF the .45 Win Mag is a particularly  reliable example, you'll have a chance.
Myself, I'd rather have a real short 12 gauge.
