I've read some of the threads in the archives regarding living in Juneau. I've got a phone interview on Monday for a prospective job up there, and I just wanted to know if anything has changed since those previous posts.
Also, I wanted to clear up some tax information: No State income tax. No State sales tax, but local cities have tax rates, Juneau is 5% Property tax on real property inside the incorporated areas Flat tax rate on vehicles based on age and city of residence Is that about right? Thanks for your help. |

I would be looking at a promotion, so I think the COL difference could be ok. Is decent employment for my wife available? She currently does customer service, but was hoping to get into personal training. I think at least to begin with she would take anything she could get. She has a b.s. in business, and experience in human resources too.

Rent/housing/COL prices are high as it is an island. No, we just can't drive out. I'm really not sure if you are being sarcastic or not. Unless something magically changed, as far as I know it is just barge or airline in or out, and that makes things a bit more expensive. Feel free to say otherwise though. |

Make sure you check into housing
Its a very tight housing market, especially once the legislature starts back up |
|
When is the legislature in session? Maybe I can adjust when I move up to avoid it, or maybe come in just after.
|
|
I lived in Hilo, Hawaii for a year. Yeah, I can deal with rain.

View Quote It starts mid January and is scheduled to run 90 days, however those bozos seem to wait until the last month to start working and often go into an extra session. As the legislature starts winding down, the tourist trade starts picking up The local guys can probably tell you better, but I think housing is an issue year around, just less of an issue at times |

June 05 to July 06. Got my PADI cert at Nautilus dive shop there. Worked on saddle road realignment among other things while I was out there. Loved it.

View Quote Nautilus is a neat shop, although the owner was a character lol. We were set up kind of cornered away from them in the lot behind the shell station. I'd love to go back and visit sometime. Miss the weather ETA: Sorry about the island bits. I would have sworn Juneau was on an island. *facepalm* |
|
Yeah, Bill was interesting. I got along with him really well, and he was a great instructor. I know where you're talking about. We used to hang out down there, go to $.50 movies at the budget theater and get shave ice. I really enjoyed the big island.
Don't sweat the island comment. I know that Juneau is effectively an island, if not geographically one. I'm going into it with eyes open. One of the perks with the job is a paid trip back "home" for the family after 2 years. They don't do that kind of thing unless you are REALLY isolated. I've got a lot of questions to ask when I interview, and may just hold out and wait for a job opening in Anchorage (my wife actually won a trip while we lived in Hilo, and we loved it up there). |

Having lived in Alaska for fairly long time, I would much rather live in Juneau than Anchorage
|

North Polar, I was giving you crap about that and being sarcastic. No harm meant, just a little poke.
|
|
|
Northpolar don't feel too bad West Juneau is on Douglas Island so technically you were part right.

Or do you mean anchorage is the door step, in a bad way? Anchorage has good and bad. There is a decent amount of bad as it is about as far north as a lot of the trash is willing to go. I do miss having a lot of the stores at hand. The museum store was kickass |

I got news for you, Fairbanks has good and bad, too
Juneau is cool, but you will get island fever (see what I did there?) Anywhere you can't drive out of... |

All of Alaska is an island. Havnt yall ever looked at a map before? We are floating in the ocean next to Mexico...... Duh....

I went to a meeting in Chicago about 10 years ago (well before cable TV reality fuck ups) and more than one thought I lived on an island, and thought we had no pavement. |

Ok, so other than high COL, isolation, and rain, anything else to be aware of? I'm excited at the prospect of living in Alaska, but want to go into this with my eyes open.

Juneau doesn't have Mountain View, so there is that going for it... Its fitting that we have so many Islanders on our... island.
But yes, Northern Seattle will be a nice place to live. |

They were willing to rent apartments; couldn't find any. |

I did 22 years in Juneau and moved to Wasilla in '05. It hadn't stopped raining so we left.

Well, I was offered the position, and accepted. I will probably be moving to Juneau the week of May 18th, but the exact date is still up in the air. I will get a chance to do a house hunting visit with the wife prior to that, so I'm looking forward to it. Thanks for the input everyone. It was appreciated. Now to get my year in so I can get in-state hunting licenses...

You need to bring as much .22 ammo as you can get or you will be asked to leave. Cash provided upon delivery.
|
|
I'll see what I can do. If you're serious, I'll bring some up on my house hunting trip. Brand preference, or just as long as it goes bang?

I scored at Walmart! I got THREE 50rnd boxes of .22. I am awesome!
I met Mr. Armstrong when he came for a visit. I'm not sure he will be a good fit. His family and himself are very nice people, way different than what is on ARFCOM. Great addition to Juneau and Alaska. Welcome home. |

I'm looking forward to making the move next month! |
