Here is your chance to get out and test your emergency bag
setup/contents in the wild. Get out there and run what ya brung. See what works, or not, for your current setup. If you plan to attend and have special training or skills you would like to share, or have included in the event, by all means let us know! We want everyone to be safe, have fun, and enjoy themselves. The event will be limited to 10-12 attendees. Location/Details: Sipsey Wilderness, AL. April 11-13 2014. We will be hiking in Friday afternoon and leaving on Sunday. If you cant make it Friday, you are more than welcome to come join us Saturday. We are working on a meet-up location to safely park our vehicles and carpool to the trailhead. More details will be posted as they transpire. A hike is required to make it to the camp area. There will be fresh water on site, but will need to be treated to be potable. Small fires are good to go. Firearms are allowed in the Sipsey, however, this will NOT be a firearms or tactics type event. Use good judgement, be safe, and obey all State and Federal laws regarding firearms in the Sipsey. Exact location and (free) permit info will be emailed to you upon your reply that you are 100% in to attend. If you reserve a spot but can't make it, let us know asap so others that do want to attend get the opportunity! Agenda: We plan on having a loosely organized event that will be a chance for all attendees to share and put survival/bushcraft knowledge to use in a friendly atmosphere. Count me in. I've been looking for an event to get more involved, and this sounds like fun.
I'm located in the Moody/Trussville area if anyone is wanting to carpool. |
|
Interested, but I am on a permanent Tues-Saturday work schedule.
Tagging for more info on meeting after work on a Saturday and camping till Sunday. If that is at all possible. I only live about 45 mins away. |
|
Hmm interesting... I'm not gonna commit to anything at the moment though.

Quoted: Can people with no BOB go Survivorman style? View Quote Sure! This will be what you make of it. There is fish and small game, as well as edible plants. Of course if we all fish for dinner, we would probably destroy the fish population. But we will cover improvised fishing and other skills that are useful even if you don't have gear. |

I am almost certain I am in, let me finalize a couple things on my schedule.
Sounds awesome! How far are we hiking? ETA: I'm in Trussville too, so we can carpool or whatever you guys want. |

View Quote Hike will be at least 1.5 miles, so not very far. We will probably do some more hiking on Saturday. |

Ok, I'm 100% IN.
I'm actually taking my son camping this weekend. He's 4, so we are car camping. |
|
This is a really good idea by the way, thanks for putting it together. It has motivated me to get the ol' pack out and work on my bushcraft skills this weekend.

This actually sounds like a blast. You all have fun and stay safe.
Please do not go all naked and afraid on us.

I like this idea. Almost definitely 100% in. Any idea on what time you're headed in on Friday?
|
|
|
I could probably make it by 8-9 pm, or the next morning. I'll say I'm 100% in, pending any unusual things that come up.

I'd rather see the scenery pics than people's mugs anyway (I don't have a database to populate). I haven't had time to explore Alabama outdoors since I got here, nor do I expect more time to for a while, but the good a natural scene like that can do you is immeasurable.
Have a good time gents. Looking forward to hearing what people experience and learn with their gear and skills. |

Interested but don't know yet if I can swing it. Thanks buddy, will have to see. The wedding stuff has everything in an uproar. Wishing that we had gone to Vegas instead. I need to go in the worst way. I have a new camping 3 day bag and equipment that I need to sort out. I also need to find out if this new cooking system is worth a poop or not. |

Looks like Daisy is coming along.
Even she has to carry her own gear though. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B2KAACK/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 |

I have a four year old son that loves camping, but this is prob a bit much for him.

I decided to get the pack out and do a little hiking today. I did 2 miles with 30 lbs, felt good.
Gonna pick the pace up next time and go for 3 miles, had the kids with me today. |

Yea I'll prob end up closer to 40 lbs after I add food, water, toys, etc.
I've never been out to sipsey, will I need boots, or will something like merrells work? |

View Quote Merrells will be fine. We will camping at the end of a trail, so we won't be doing much in the way of rappelling, wading, etc. Although, all of those activities are available a short distance from our camping location. About 50 yards away is a 30+ ft water fall. |
