ST. PAUL, Minn. - A 61-year-old Mankato man was sentenced to one year and one day in prison Thursday for possession of multiple machine guns.

A judge in a St. Paul Federal court sentenced Ronald Willis Strand on one count of unlawful possession of a machine gun. In his April 8 plea agreement, he admitted possessing a 223-caliber, Model A-15 machine gun on May 14, 2009. Strand also admitted possessing two other machine guns on that same day.

Strand was arrested on May 13, 2009 on a state warrant, and police discovered the weaponry while executing a state search warrant at his residence relative to that case.

This case resulted from an investigation by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Minnesota River Valley Drug and Gang Task Force.

SAVAGE, Minn. - A Savage man was charged Monday for possessing a machine gun, pipe bombs and explosives.

Wesley Noah Banks, 49, was recently charged for purportedly possessing a model AR-15 machine gun. Federal law prohibits any person from possessing any type of machine gun.

During a detention hearing, prosecutors also alleged that Banks was responsible for the sale of pipe bombs, and that he was found in possession of numerous other illegal items, including drugs, explosives, and components for manufacturing machine guns and pipe bombs.

During the execution of a search warrant at Banks’ residence in January of 2010, agents seized suspected pipe bombs, blasting caps, ammunition, a M-18 Claymore mine, 29 firearms, nearly 100 pounds of chemicals used to make explosives, an indoor grow operation with 98 live marijuana plants, dozens of books on making bombs, among other items.

A judge found Banks to be a danger to the community and ordered him to remain in custody.

We all know this is incorrect. Someone should tell Fox News that.

Maybe they believe the federal inmates would rather have a gun running twink than some crotchety old man as their penal play toy?.. pun intended

This sholdn't even be a law.

He was arrested on a state warrant?  It's a wonder the Feds even allow the states to step on their toes like that!

FBHO and FGWB for not doing anything about it.

Drug and Gang task force involved. That adds a twist. Throw the age in there, and I might guess that he has an MC club affiliation.

ETA: Looks like it was on the drug side...

A Mankato bondsman who was arrested a year ago during a drug sting has
pleaded guilty to a federal charge of unlawful possession of a machine
gun.

During a plea hearing Thursday in U.S. District Court in St. Paul,
Ronald Willis Strand, 61, admitted to possessing a model A-15 machine
gun, and two other machine guns, on May 14. That’s the day his house was
searched by the Minnesota River Valley Drug Task Force.

Strand had been arrested after allegedly trading a bail bond for
prescription drugs and a television. He was facing drug charges in Blue
Earth County, but those charges were dismissed after Strand was indicted
by a federal grand jury in October.

While searching Strand’s house for drugs, investigators found the
machine guns and other weapons. The Bloomington Bomb Squad also was
called to the house to help remove items that could have been used to
make explosives.

Strand was released on his own recognizance after making his first
appearance in federal court on Oct. 20. His release conditions were
continued while he awaits a sentencing hearing, which has not been
scheduled. Strand is facing a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

Strand was initially arrested by the drug task force after an informant
reported he had exchanged $90,000 in bail for sexual favors and stolen
property. The informant set up a deal on May 13 where Strand allegedly
agreed to post a bond for that person to get out of jail. In exchange,
Strand allegedly agreed to accept a stolen television and several
prescription pills for the bond.

When the informant and a task force agent met Strand in downtown
Mankato, Strand helped the agent load a television into Strand’s pickup,
that criminal complaint said. Strand was stopped a few blocks away and
arrested. His house wasn’t searched until the next day.

Strand served as a Mankato police officer form July 1971 to July 1973.
He was terminated by the city’s Civil Service Commission, according to
city records. Those records do not list why Strand was fired.

More recently, Strand drew attention when he announced plans to
transform Garden City’s former middle school into a halfway house and
treatment facility for chemically dependent women and their children.

The idiots who put together a MG from parts deserve every day in jail they get.

Follow the f*cking law and stop ruining it for the rest of us.

And anyone stupid enough to build pipe bombs deserves all the time behind bars that they can get.

Anyone remember this piece of work?

Let's be clear:  it seems this guy had a warrant executed by the Drug and Gang Task force for something other than MG possession.  This is not some grandpa with a C&R Thompson under his bed from WWII, this was a bad guy.

Story from April says he traded bail bonds for prescription drugs, stolen property, etc.
