January 15 Cold Weather Handgun / Princeton MN
Let the 2005 training begin! |
Is this going to cover the same material as Handgun 1?
If not, is there a Handgun 1 in the works. I want to be ready if concealed carry gets back on the books. Sully, having been to carbine 1&2 last summer how should I go about registering for courses? thanks, |
You'll like the Handguns 1 course! Bring plenty of ammo! About 300 rds should do, but I went through ~350 when I took it...Just for fun. |
Yup, I ended up using close to 400 rounds that class There was a little intro to Handgun 2 at the end of the day. |
hawk,
Cold Weather Handgun is different than Handgun-1. Cold Weather courses are half a day in length, and the emphasis is placed on weapon presentations from heavy bulky clothing, doing manipulations like reloading and jambs with gloves on and numb fingers. If we are lucky and have some snow and ice on the ground, it will also deal with foundation stability. Registration is the same as always, get the paperwork in!!! |
Sully, I'll be at Handgun 1 on the 14th and CWH on the 15th. Sending in my registration today.
mcnielsen,
We look forward to seeing you on the 14th and 15th. Now how many more are willing to come out and shoot??? Stay Safe, Greg Sullivan "Sully" Chief Instructor www.thedefensiveedge.com |
Mini-Quin and I will be there for sure. The little guy is up for loading mags for people
His mobility will be somewhat limited though. We found out today that it's time for the second round of treatment on his legs. That means casts on both legs He is a real champ about it though we try not to let it stop him from doing things he loves. |
What is class time? |
Start time is 09:00hrs or 9:00AM. We will run for about 4-hours and play it by ear from there. I was there yesterday and the snow/ice is so hard that you can drive on it and not leave tracks.

Im waiting on the ok from work for the day off, but it looks like I will be there the 14th and 15th also. |
Sully, I know in prior classes, you recommended ballistic vests. Is this something you suggest for this class?
You're right. He has recommended it in his prior classes, but my suggestion is this: 1.) You're going to be shooting outside, hence it will be COLD! This tells me you should ===> Wear It. It's a good under-layer. Especially with polypro liner 2.) You're going to be shooting at a dirt embankment, WHICH IS FROZEN OVER 18+ INCHES DEEP. This tells me you should ===> Wear It. It's good protection incase one of those FMJs bounces backward off the hard soil & nips you in the chest. My overall suggestion: IF U HAVE IT, WEAR IT! Besides, with QuinlanV shooting his Kimber nearby... Why take the chance. J/K Buddy! QuinV===> <===Me |
Colt snob Armor is never a bad idea. Were it is strongly encouraged is when we are doing a lot of movement and positional shooting. For a class like CWH I will be using my concealment rig and very likely soft armor. |
I would suggest that you not borrow armor from death451... he is a sadist. ::shudders:: |
The body armor is something I always highly recommend when we are working in and around vehicles, as well as in team skills due to proximity. Handgun-1 is a course of solid base fundamentals, with no vehicle or team skills. Cold Weather Handgun will go with the flow of the group that is present, as I do like to have fun and push some, but I will never leave anyone in the dust either.

For those planning on attending. It appears that this year it should be COLD!!! The load out is simple:
Handgun with a minimum of 3-mags or speed loaders, Holster, Mag Carrier, 300rds Eye and Ear Protection, Warm Clothes (to include Foot Wear) Hat and Gloves Snacks Firewood for the Wood Burner in the shack for warm ups. Stay Safe, Greg Sullivan "Sully" Chief Instructor www.thedefensiveedge.com |
Fixed It For Ya! PS. Don't forget the straw to suck the creme out of the twinkies! I recommend wrapping funyuns around it first... |
Your website says 1pm, might want to update it. |
I was hoping to be there, but unless someone knows where I can get some size 17 winter boots, you'll have to count me out I don't really want to have frostbitten toes.
Let us know how it goes. |
Yep, I know the website says 1:00pm, but we are starting at 0900hrs or 9:00am. Our webmaster needs to update the website, afterall you don't want me messing with the cryptic stuff. Wintermute you might check at www.sportsmansguide.com , as they seem to have big foot stuff on the store shelf every time I am down there. I will prewarn everyone that if it is going to be as cold as they are saying, then we will be at least doing some shooting from the Machine Gunners Shack, as the wood burner takes enough chill off to shoot in a little comfort.

It dont look like I am going to make it. I cant get time off so It looks like I will have to wait for a weekend class. |

Robert's Shoes down on Hennepin specializes in large sizes. They do a lot of business with the local basketball and football athletes. |
It's looking like it will be to cold to bring mini-quin. Time to start looking for a sitter.
Really Cold Weather Handgun |
Thanks for the tips guys, I"ll check em out. Maybe I can make it after all.
Dammit Q, post links over in WI, already willya? Just had this pop up on "active topics". Will be checking the schedule. Any issues with registering a few days before, Sully? |
DOH! Sorry sir I won't let it happen again. First round is on FedGunner Since you are an alumni, it's pretty safe to say Sully can fit you in. Besides with the forcast looking how it does, there will probably be some "no shows" |
Don't worry, I haven't forgotten. I WILL be looking in your direction when it comes time for the second Guinness, however. Don't think we'll be able to make this one on such short notice. I did, however post a link to this thread over in the WI hometown just in case others can make it. |
Looks like I'll be there. Found some boots at Cabelas so I should be good to go.
Good Friggin' Luck! You're gonna be Chiiiiiilllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllled to the bone!

Mmmm. It wasn't so bad today at HG1.
Our discharged weapons kept us nice and warm! |
DAMN Cold Weather Handgun was a blast! It was definetly good to get back at it.
Cold morning at first, but the Machine gun shack warmed up nice. I had a great time as usual.
Thanks Sully!!! |
It was a Grand Day!!! Three brave souls showed themselves for this very useful and practical training session that SHOULD HAVE BEEN ATTENDED BY ALL!!! We started the day with some warm up presentations from heavy clothing. Also worked on was fundamentals of marksmanship with gloves on. Reloads, tactical reloads, malfuncitions were also worked on with gloved hands. Next we moved onto strong hand only presentations and manipulations, followed by weak hand only presentations and manipulations, all from heavy clothing presentations with gloved hands. Last we moved outside for a session of CQB from heavy clothing concealment. It again was a Grand Day!!!

Would have loved to have been there, but some of us had no real notice of the upcoming event and couldn't make it up... Can't wait for the next classes. When are they again? |
You guys gotta B!c#sl@p your WI Hometown Moderator so that he PROVIDES LINKS/LISTS of such DE Course information as we do here... Then you'd all have NO EXCUSE to complain!!! J/K I didn't have the $$, had to work, and didn't have much ammo anyways... |
Now there's the rub. Someone [cough]Fedgunner/Quinlan[/cough] would have to let him know. I suppose one of us could have been invited [cough]Fedgunner/Quinlan[/cough] to the Alumini meeting, as well. |
Wish I hadn't missed out. Damn cold of mine just didn't want to go away. I had everything all ready to go too.
See you all at the next one tho |
Hey, nobody lets me know. I just keep my eyes open here and here. Then when a class is coming up I start a thread for it (if Sully has not done so already). It looks like I will need to fire one up in the WI section as well. I learned my lesson |
Awwww shucks.
Don't take it too hard. Granted we missed some trigger time with Sully (and the MN crew), but a round (now two, right?) of Guinness will make up for it. I kept my eye on the DE Industry forum, but missed the update ad D-E.com All is well |
I should really start posting the stuff in the other hometown forums anyway. If we start getting a larger base of regular attending alumni, it opens up new possibilities for the classes.
Then the more advanced high speed, low drag, Teflon coated, and air cooled stuff happens |
Hey Hawk,
It was good to meet ya and great shootin' with you guys at Sully's. It sounds like the Cold Weather Handgun course was fun too. Would have much rather been back up there shooting again versus sitting in the armory for drill. By the way, THANKS AGAIN helping me get out of Sully's place. Otherwise, I'd have been screwed!!!! Buy you a beer some time!!! Later. Mike |
