Nice indoor range, about 8 booths.

Not much stock, I was told by a salesperson there that they will not do FFL transfers, but a decent place to shoot.

I go to G.A.T. Guns in Dundee for some 25yrd indoor handgun shooting only because it is the closest range to my house. About 10 mins. Not the cheapest place, but it is convenient for me to go to.

Any other ranges would take me 40 mins or more.

For some indoor rifle practice, I like going to Gun World in Bensenville. Nice place to go in the winter when the outdoor ranges are closed.

And most of you probably know of our one and only Buffalo Range in Ottawa which is about the only real outdoor 'public' rifle range for semi-auto rifle shooters in the nothern part of Illinois.

Avalon - I can't believe you called the "Smoke and Choke" a nice indoor range! (Well they have cleaned it up a bit.) - He did do transfers for about $45 a year ago - don't know about now.

I second the Sycamore Sportsman Club - $10 to shoot if your a non-member and you can shoot any caliber up to - but not including - a .50 cal rifle. (Black powder OK I think.) The guys there have some rules but Its still laid back.

It's not too bad now that it's all cleaned up. I only shoot there once every 3 or 4 months, since I don't live in McHenry. I do buy most of my supplies there since I still work in McHenry.

I asked about a transfer a few months ago, I was told "nope!"

I see that some of you are from north/northeastern suburbs. (Lake and McHenry county’s) I personally enjoy shooting at the Kenosha Co. Conservation Club's Bristol range in Wisconsin. It's only about 20 minutes north from Great America or 15 minutes from the Bass Pro Shop in Gurnee Mills.

www.bristolranges.com

I realize that to some this is a bit of a trip, but if you're going to make a day of it the ranges are in great shape, the folks are super nice and there is a lot to do. Black powder, high power rifle (that includes the big .50's!) out to 200 yards, handgun, shotgun (trap and skeet), bows and airguns! A yearly membership (you do not need to become one) is $60.00 and that lowers your day at the range from $15 to $4! Definitely worth a look!

Bristol stinks.

1 ROUND AT A TIME CENTERFIRE RIFLE!

5 ROUNDS PISTOL!

No silhouette targets, or anything that might look "human". No rapid fire (not that it's possible with 1 round in a mag at a time).

Although a buddy of mine did a mag dump (aka "mag check") with an MP5, with the R.O.'s permission (the R.O. was watching from right behind him), and WOW! were people jumping around looking to see who did that! LOL!

[blue]Not to get into a big debate or look like the guy that can disregard rules but. . .

Bristol does not stink.

The RO's may watch new comers a bit carefully and make sure they adhere strictly to the rules. After you've gone a few times and start to get to know some people, things become a bit more relaxed.

I can't remeber the last time I only loaded 1 round at a time (AR or 30-06 or my .22). I don't shoot a lot of pistol there, but when I do I usually use a full 15 round mag.

I simply posted it as an option for folks to check out. I would LOVE to know of any place (southeastern Wis. to northeastern IL.) where one could "unwind" a bit. Rapid fire, 300 to 500 yard ranges, shooting while moving, night shoots, Full Auto! Strippers! Pizza! Drinking! etc! etc! etc!

Any ideas ? ![/blue]

Under the stipulation that I have yet to shoot at their range, I have been in the Maxon shop a few times (though I have little experience to rate it).  They have an indoor range, with what I believe to be two rooms:  one for pistol and one for higher-power firearms.  I also am under the impression that you can shoot 5.56 there, but I seem to get conflicting answers from the staff about rate of fire, etc.

[blue]Hmmm, I doubt they have strippers or pizza (if they do I'll question the quality) and I'm not crazy about that idea of the "targets" firing back but what the heck. . . I'm in!

Kidding. I'll leave that up to the pro's in our armed forces. God bless 'em![/blue]

I usually shoot pistols at Chicago Ridge (Only 8 miles away) rifles+ shotguns at Buffalo when I can.  Info on Chigago Ridge---Pistols + 22 rifles only. Costs about $12 (techically per hour but I've NEVER seen them charge more even after 3+ hours--still $12) Law Enforcment gets a discount. Your're supposed to use no-exposed-lead bullets but they don't check--they just ask--I suppose it's a local law they "try" to comply with-- Anyway paper targets on reels 1 50' and 1 75' range each with about 10 stalls. oh, they're open late on tuesdays + thursdays--till 8pm hope this helped

hey, i recommend siddens indoor shooting range.  i can't remember prices for sure, but it's not much to shoot and sonny (the owner) is a superb guy.  i know pistol isn't a problem-as far as rifle, i don't know what his limit on caliber is.  i know for a while he only had .22 because i've shot mine in there, but it's been a while.  i know now that he lets guys shoot deergun slugs (yes that's the TECHNICAL term, lol)  but give him a call at 217-498-6988.  he's outside of rochester, il about 3-maybe 4 miles in buckhart, il.  it's easy to get there.  beyond that-that's all i know.

Does anyone have exact information on how to reach the range in Racine, WI?  It is a 600 yard range that has matches during the year, but I don't like to go somewhere without exact instructions.  I usually just end up shooting the 200 yard reduced course at Bristol, but it is time to work on reading the wind, and 200 yards is too close.

Thanks,

Anyone have a clue what the rules are on Magazine fed rifles up at Bristol (no, not off the page, but what's actually being said at Bristol). It would suck to travel up there and have to single load. Yuck. Oh, and is Milsurp/FMJ allowed up there?
Link Posted: 1/18/2005 11:20:48 AM EDT

bristol is single load only. Sorry

Some range officers at Bristol will allow you to load a magazine with say 5 rounds or so, but then they hover over you like a hawk until the gun is empty.  I asked if I could load a 20 round mag with 15 rounds and the officer looked at me and scoffed like I was from Mars or something.  I've had some hellacious jams trying to single load by the way.  Don't make the trip if you have far to go, unless you like dropping one round at a time into the chamber.  Oh, they do have designated "timed fire" benches, but when I asked what the rules were, they very same RO had absolutely no clue.  The term seems to have little meaning there.

Nice, range full of idiots. I've only been to the rifle tube at bass pro in Gurnee, and paying $10/hr or whatever it was isn't really bad, I guess, and the RO up there lets you load up 5-6 rounds per mag (nice  older guy) but it's the usual 1 shot per second rule. Auuugh I hate oldtimer bolt-gun rules.

No bump firing at Bristol. That is for sure. But have you noticed how close it is to a residential area. Man we would never pull that off in Illinois. I'm sure they are very aware of not pissing of the neigbors. It''s a great little range but it is not a gravel pit.

Try loading one from the mag instead of droping one straight in the pipe. The bolt will stay back after every shot. All you have to do is pop a round in the mag slam it in and hit the bolt release. It is an easy no hasell way to single load.

"Timed fire" is anything but fast. It would be for guys who were practicing for DCM or John Garand matches.

Racecar,

Bristol exists because it was there before any residential houses ever were.  I believe the range has been there since the 1920's, so anything built around it is encroachment by default.  If a new range of its size were to be constructed either there or in IL, yes, things would not go so smoothly.  But as it stands now, the neighbors really have no grounds to argue.........................When I shoot there, I typically have a magazine inserted into the rifle and press a round into the follower through the ejection window, then hit the bolt release.  At times, for brevity's sake, I have simply dropped a round on top of the follower and allowed the bolt to release forward....the result has been several awful (nearly inoperable) jams.  I do not want to bump fire, but simply let the gun chamber a round on its own to ensure reliability.  I don't think this is pushing it.  My fingers often get bloodied and blackened trying to push the round in the small window, and loading a fresh mag every round is just plain rediculous.  For this reason, I have found new grounds to test my black rifle ( J&R in Aurora).  They seem to be very AR friendly.  I'll drive the extra miles and spend the extra bucks for that alone.
