This really works well, just bake for 2 hours and wipe with a bunch of rags!!

The goo just seeps out of the wood & runs off the steal.

After the wipe down, I'm no longer "stuck" to my work.
I was washing my mil-surps with "anything" but it was 2+ hours to get it done.

This is way easy!!

Why didn't you just put your wood in the dishwasher?

Only a few stocks are small enough to fit in a dishwasher. Most Mauser, SKS, and the other, commonly found "gooey" stocks are just too big. I've seen the results of an oven like this, and it makes old guns much easier to play with.

My first thought was "Did you try it with a Swedish Mauser?"

I mean, it's like a sauna for guns!

What kind of temperatures you get to? I'm thinking that would help Dura-coat cure.

I do love this idea.  Rem, do you do this for all the guns that come your way or just your personal ones?

Bah....Real men use propane fired electric powered 35,000 BTU heaters.

........I hooked up the 35,000 BTU heater blower and aimed it at the bottom of the tube.

Two minutes later the temp of the air coming out of the top of the tube was 190 degrees.

I backed the blower away from the tube and got a constant 160 degrees, and within 10 minutes the cosmoline was bubbling to the surface.

I would let it sit in the heat for 10 minutes, then remove it and wipe it down with paper towels, and do the final wipe using denatured alcohol.

I did 4 cycles, and I think i'll be doing a few more.

Now the next time my friends come over they will be asking me why I have a trashcan with a bunch of light bulbs sticking into it in my garage.

I need 300 degrees for Moly Resin, but that setup is way cool.

Is cosmo basically grease?

I have some subgun mags soaking in my solvent tank.  Will the cosmo disolve eventually?

ETA: Post 555.  Bet I spend 556 on a "+1" or some such....

Depending on who makes it and what it's application is for and what type of application medium is desired is what cosmoline is made from.

This is from the MSDS of one manufacturer of cosmoline:

PETROLEUM OIL, HYDROTREATED HEAVY NAPHTHENIC DISTILLATE
(PETROLEUM), PETROLEUM DISTILLATES, MINERAL OIL
>60%
PARIFIN WAX
>40%
