Practical Shotgun Match at South Mountain Sunday July 25th 8:00 AM.
I believe the match fee was $15.00 last time I shot it. A couple of the 100 round bird shot value packs from Walmart and a couple boxes of slugs should be able to get you through it safely. www.phoenixrodandgun.org/ Hope to see some of you guys there. |

Sinistral:
Who makes the vertical grip for your shotgun shown in the pic? Are they available at CavArms? I have a Win1300 that I would like to try that on. How does it work out for you? Faster/more comfortable then the standard fore end grip? |
Its the surefire M69 railed fore end, with falcon vertical grip and coyote rail pannel covers. I don't think they make one for the winchester. They are available for the Remington and Mossberg...Shooter's World carries them. The main things I like the vertical grip for are: 1) using it as a monopod for long range slug targets 2) using it to shoot the gun off my shoulder around cover, left or right handed 3) ease of cycling the gun with only one hand (drag or rake the slide against cover or part of your body) |
South paws are 1337, as the buttstock says. |

Looks like a good time.
I am rubbing my shoulder right now from a shotgun stage in the IPSC match I shot at Blackwater USA yesterday. I had to laugh when you said the humidty kept some people away. It rain like a bitch on us almost all day. The next 3 gun we have I am going tap my CAV for duty. I will try to get some pics of it in action. |
humidity and 110 degree heat sucks! There was a nice breeze most of yesterday though so it wasn't too bad.
cool.....it'd be nice to have some competition pics of people other than us using our products, to put on the site's galleries |

I've never done one of these, but I have often considered getting involved in something like it, maybe 3-gun or idpa, at this point though I'm kinda ignorant on the whole thing. Just remember where I'm coming from when I ask this question.
It looks to me like somebody with a detachable mag shotgun would have a huge advantage, I'm guessing that the timer was still running during all those mag changes (It looked like he was still timing). Is there a different class for semi auto shotguns w/ a detachable mag? |
mag fed shotguns are in open class....in open class almost anything goes. Because I am using a dot sight on my shotgun, I have to shoot in open class. Reloading on the shotgun stages is what eats up most of your time, whoever can load the fastest or starts off with the most shells in the gun is the winner often, if they hit all the targets. tactical class shotguns must have a 22" barrel and 23" magazine tube or less, iron sights only, no speed loaders. |
Thanx, I figured it had to be something like that, otherwise a guy with a $200 Saiga could completely run over the top of somebody With a Rem 870. |
A lot of people tried using saigas when they came out, not many stuck with them. They're fine for stages that require all birdshot....if you have to change loads, it makes it a lot harder to use them effectively. |
Cool, more info, thank you. Would you mind esplaning the problem? would you just need to carry mags with different loads? Also I'm sure the 5 round mags they have now are also limiting, maybe if we could get the 8 round mags. I'm more or less just curious about this, my next purchase is gonna be one of the 870P's with the 20" barrel that CDNN has, I'd rather have an 18" for a house sweeper, but at $219, it a good deal for something to build on. |
5 round mags are the problem....changing them usually takes as long as loading several shells. Since you are in open class with a mag fed shotgun, and using 5 round mags the people using 4 round tec-loaders for their tube fed guns are going to stomp your ass (as long as they are good with using the tec-loaders). Changing the mag is definitely slower than loading one of an individual type of shell. if a match director wanted to, they could set up a stage with every other round shot then slug to screw with people using mag fed shotguns....sure, you could stagger them in the magazine, but if you miss a shot, you are screwed. Shooting a slug at the wrong target, can result in a severe penalty or at worse a match DQ. |
Thanx again, I guess the 870P would be the better choice then.
Just to back up what Sinistral said, if there was a system out there that gave you a .5 second advantage EVERYONE would have it. Some of the shotguns out there looked like space guns from Star Treck that cost hundreds if not into the thousands of dollars, if the Siaga worked they would be using it.
Every time I get a wild hair to go buy one the first thing that Garryowen says to me is"Have you shot one?' followed up with "well when you do, you will know why no one uses them" |
Sage advice. Research, research, research, research, research, research, research, research, research, then purchase. Unless you're independently wealthy. I've talked to Sinistral about my current gear and running these matches. His advice was, bring what you've got, borrow what you don't have and see what works and what doesn't. Then you can start investing your money more effectively. |

Well I have a Rem 870 I used for Duck in NorCal, and for Dove and Quail here in AZ, so I know they work. I think that with the reputation the 870P's have I should be OK getting one.
Heck w/ that.. just get a new barrel.

But I still use my 870 for Dove and quail, I understand I could just swap out barrels, but if I wanted to put a new stock or ghost sites on it it starts becoming a dedicated SD shotgun. CDNN is selling the 20" barrel 870P with the speed stock (or whatever it's called) for $219, so with thier $10 flat shipping and Warrens $15 FFL charge that about $245, which seems like a good deal. |
Where are you seeing Remington 870Ps for $219? I have CDNN's latest print catelog, have checked their .pdf catalog (appears to be the same as the print), and I checked online and I'm not seeing them. Please point me in the right direction. |
On page 33, it says, bottom right corner;
Maybe I'm assuming too much, but that is the 870P right? |
Doesn't have one. *EDIT* I thought you were refering to the number for the firearm... Duh. Yes, I had an old catalog. |
Check to see if you have an older catalog. I'm still not seeing it.
Aack... you're right, I have the 2004-2, current is 2004-3. I had just checked a couple weeks ago for a new one. I guess they put it up recently. |

Beat all the pump guys save one, and half the limited (tactical auto-loader) guys |
That's alright; they're the ones that will be fumbling with their fancy range gear when they really need it. To be honest, I agree completely with your attitude regarding the comps. |
Alot of those guys wont even have their fancy range gear "when they need it." For alot of them this might as well be horse shoe throwing as some of them do not keep weapons for defensive purposes.
Looks like a fun class.
Out of curiousity, no taking covers while reloading? |
This was a match not a class, so cover isnt generally setup.
