Why did U. S. Senator Edward Kennedy fight to save the M14 in 1963?  In a word, jobs.  According to the November 1963 issue of Guns & Ammo page 57,

"Counter pressures have been aroused and aired for many months concerning hints of the possible demise of the M14.  An influential trio of Massachusetts legislators paid a call to Defense Secretary McNamara to plead for new orders last winter when Harrington & Richardson, Inc., Worcester, Mass., one of the M14's three manufacturers, received word that its present order would be the last.  The members of the this delegation were House Speaker McCormack, Senator Ted Kennedy, who has promised to "do more for Massachusetts," and Senator Saltonstall, Senate Armed Service Committee ranking Republican.  They departed empty-handed."

The following contains all of the subcontractors I've been able to identify to date in my research.  All of the subcontractors to Harrington & Richardson Arms (Worcester, MA) have been identified and are listed below.

How much do you want to bet that Harrington & Richardson, Inc., Worcester, Mass was a big campaign contributor?  If Teddy did anything, it was to help Teddy!  He held that seat for so many years for a reason!  In a word, jobs votes!

At least Teddy understood jobs = votes.

Dont use your critical thinking. Everyone knows that politicians put the people first and not their pockets.

FZR = Frazier Manufacturing Company

Frazier Manufacturing made elevation and pinion assemblies (1962) and windage knobs but I don't know who they made them for.  We know it wasn't H&R.  TRW may have used FZR rear sight knobs but I don't have any information to indicate they did.  What I've seen is WRIGHT knobs on "unaltered/unissued" TRW rifles.  So, Frazier was likely a subcontractor to Winchester or Springfield Armory in 1962.

I added Mercury Tool & Machine to the list above.  They made operating rods for Rock Island Arsenal who was the primary contractor.

There's still plenty I haven't uncovered.

Well I live in gun valley, or what is left of it.

Many of those shops are still around in spite of Fat Boy Ted and his hate for business.

Looks like a good stimulus package to me.  Can we start making our ammo in country soon, too?

He needed to save the Springfield Armory since it was in his states.  His brother, President Kennedy had saved the armory and it would remain safe so long as he was president.  It wasn't until after Kennedy died and Johnson was president that it was shut down.  It was shut down by MacNamara (sp?) who felt it was better to go with the M16 produced by private contractors.

OP: Thank you for a most informative post! I am a Worcester native and am familiar with many of those companies. I now know what I will have to pick peoples' brains about the next time I am in the area.

You're welcome.  I just added Swank, Inc.  Swank made the M14 selector lock for Winchester in 1961.  The sleuthing continues . . . .

I live in Massachusetts and Fat Boy never did anything that did not benefit him. Might be that his brother told him to push for it, but it was more than likely that H&R were lining his pocket. He did nothing to save our military bases, put a number of our towns and cities in the hurt locker because he did nothing to stop the base closings. He stood at a defense plant in the city next to mine and told the workers that he was working to save their jobs. There is a Home Depot there now. He was in on killing the project.

He was a no good, rat bastard, left wing parasite. Glad he is dead, hope he is rotting in hell with his good buddy Saddam Hussien.

No, I am not a Kennedy fan.

Well said.  Obviously, Ted Kennedy was a self-serving liberal.  FWIW, I am no fan of Ted Kennedy either.

Fellas, lighten up.  Look on the bright side of things for old Teddy will ya.  He's been sober for over a year now.
