I have several SBRs.  Im going to file another stripped lower this week and I thought I would go ahead and file an SBS while I was at it.

Currently have an 870 Police that I rarely shoot.

From what Ive seen 14 to 14.5 inches looks like the way to go.

I like the ported barrels but shotguns really arent my thing.  Any suggestions or general knowledge comments would be welcomed before I file.

A5 or model 11 is my suggestion.  I want one bad.

That 870 looks newer production. I think the oh-so-reputable people of the internet have been saying the new Police models come with a plastic trigger guard like the Express and are just inferior in quality to the older models in general. Any weight to these claims?

I have a form 1 for a 12.5" 870 pending right now. Definitely going to do wood furniture on it. I wanted shorter than the 14" varieties.

Nice! Who did the work? Also, does it function as reliably prior to shortening? Any modifications other than the chop?

How many rounds are these SBSs holding on average? I'm definitely intrigued with the concept but also can't help but think of them as novelty guns if the capacity is greatly reduced. I have a 590 that would be my Form 1 candidate if this proves practical.

On an 870, a 12.0-12.5 sbs holds 4 in the mag tube and 1 in the chamber. I believe the 14.0-14.5 varieties will hold one extra with a one round tube extension.

ETA Waylon beat me to it.

Thanks, fellas. If I decide to do a SBS, I'd probably just buy another Mossy but with a 5-shot tube. I believe my 590 has an 8-shot tube and I wouldn't want to mess with cutting it back along with the barrel.

Check out gunbroker for police trade-in 870s. Every once in a while you can find some good deals for around $250.

I'm left handed and prefer the tang safety on a Mossberg. I do have an 870 Express Super Mag for a turkey gun, but I like Mossies better for HD.

Im happy with the old wingmaster I snagged for $170. Come to think of it, I'm into a 870 wingmaster and an 1100 for under $430

I love my 870 SBS.  Started on an old Scattergun Tech.  Sent to WC to cut to 14 and add the +1 extension.  Far right in the photo:

Been wanting one of those Stoeger double defense over and unders to cut down. I think an over/under shorty would be bad ass.

Just got the stamp back today for this. It's a 13" Vepr 12.

Rose Action Sports, Guncat here on ARF.

Only mod has been the chop, and it's cycled everything I've put in it.  I think the inertia guns get fucky if you start adding weight, but taking it away doesn't seem to matter.

Was it a regular shotgun that was Form 1'd and chopped?  If so, did you have to do anything to the gas system or is it GTG with just the shortened bbl?

Shot it Saturday. Here is my post from another forum on how it ran. I am very happy with the results all things considering.

"Well....just got back from the range. After the outing I truly believe I picked the right gun out of the couple a had to choose from. I started out with Estate 00 and it chewed thru 20 rounds with ease. Though my shoulder may beg to differ. holy shit this thing will let you know it's there. Kicks like a fuckin mule. Moved to some Fiocchi 3" #4 steel shot, the kind I use regularly for duck hunting, and ran 20 rounds again with no issues. Good so far. Grabbed son Kent Fast eel 2-3/4" 6's and again no issues. Then, all I had left to try, I grabbed the shittiest Winchester bulk pack 8's. Unfortunately, it choked on every single one of these fired. It didn't even eject most of them. Although I said I didn't care if it ran these, it bugged me a little as the gun ran flawless otherwise. I haven't done anything to smooth this thing out other than shoot it, so I may try some polishing to see if it helps at all.

I'm hoping this will help others that may be on the fence about whether or not to sbs. If you start with a good shotgun, you don't need other work to get it to run right. A 13" barrel running all but the cheapest shit right out ta the box is a testament to just how good these guns are."
