With all the new variants and optics with different spacing systems, it is a bit confusing as to how high one should mount their sights and/or optics, so this thread will detail the heights of the rails and optics of the different AUG variants.
For rails, measurement is to/from the top of the rail surface––For optics and sights, measurement is to the approximate center. That way it won't matter which rifle you have. As a baseline we'll also show standard AR-15 measurements, which is what most of the sights and optics out there are being designed for. Help me fill in the blanks. Dial calipers or better should be used. Pics are nice if you want to get fancy. Pick your rail height (comb to top of rail) from the first list, then look at the sights or optics list (rail to center) and add them together to determine total height from the comb. Comb to top of rail height: AR-15: 0.530 AXR: 0.765 STG556: 0.960 XM17E4: 0.700 Promoted Pawn: 0.688 2020's TR-35: 0.700 AUG A2: ____ AUG USA A3 Standard: 0.590 AUG USA A3 High: 0.905 (Rare. Aimpoint Micro on STG-556 using LaRue LT661 mount: .875" from top of rail to center of optic.*
Aimpoint ML3 on STG-556 using LaRue LT152 mount: 1.25" from top of rail to center of optic.** Trijicon RX30-23 on STG-556 using ARMS mount: 1.625" from top of rail to center of optic.*** * = I find this the lowest possible practical height for the Micro, very solid cheekweld, any lower would be unusable by me. ** = This seems an excellent height w/good cheekweld but not too high. *** = Usable but too high w/insufficient cheekweld when compared to the others. Added, thanks!
Does anyone know if there's an optic height FAQ somewhere on this vast site? I don't have time to look at the moment. Standard optic and sight heights would make this post fill up quicker. |

What is the distance from bore center to rail on a flat top AR and then bore center to rail on STG/AXR There are some interesting front sights that mount on the barrel (usually gas block type) that might work very well on an STG or AXR providing the rear one could be matched for height. I know you are thinking more for optical sights but for my use a set of simple light irons would sure be nice. The set up might cost as much as an aimpoint c3 though and might weigh about the same and the micro would be even lighter so maybe not but it would still be good info. EDIT 2-24-09: Bore center to rail top; AXR 1.575, STG 1 725, AR flat top 1.230

Good info to have in one place. Per request, I'll tack this for now.

As for Irons––I meant to say from rail to center, not comb to center. Fixed it. |

STG-556 w/Aimpoint CS: 1.2" measured from top of rail to the center of the CS's 26mm tube. Near-perfect cheekweld!

So all this variation tells me that you can't easily use backup iron sights on the AUGs (and variants), huh?

Just the initial height off the comb is different between rifles. Biggest limiting factor is if you have enough real estate on your rail to fit everything. |

True, I guess if all the sights on one particular gun are on the same height rail, there's no problem. On the AUG though, how are you supposed to have space for an optic and backup irons?

If you use a small optic like the Aimpoint Micro series then it's no problem but even std-length optics like the Aimpoints will fit w/BUIS if you use either a fixed front sight or a folding front sight set to fold forward instead of back. Elcan Specter RD: 2.5" measured from top of comb to center of optic so 1.56" from top of rail to center of optic?

Comb to optic center height:
AUG A1: 1.85" |
|
|
Comb to top of rail height:
AR-15: 0.530 AUG USA A3: 0.590 so, if im reading right, the difference between the aug a3 and the ar15 is only .06''? so basically, i could put my cantilever mounted aimpoint on an aug a3 with little problems? |

Should work just fine. The AUG is well suited for CQB (shooting and moving, typically <50yds). When shooting a long gun (or pistol) in CQB you should bring the weapon up to your eye, rather than squash your head down on the weapon. This allows you to scan and move in a more natural manner. You want the sighting system low on a precision rifle to reduce parallax, but for CQB it's heads-up. To find your sweet spot, stand up straight, close your eyes and shoulder your rifle. Open your eyes and see if you are looking through your sights or optic. For me, the AXR with the GGG Aimpoint Micro mount is perfect. Shooting, moving, cornering, etc.; I am able to keep my eye in-line with the optic. You won't be looking over the top of your shooting glasses that way either, which is extra important if you wear prescription glasses, like me. |

Anyone know the exact height difference between a standard AR rail and a standard AR railed gasblock?

As for now we are not expressing any any interest in products that may or may not be in the works. We're always looking to purchase new and improved existing products, but prefer to avoid the boundless speculation over unavailable ideas. Thanks.

Anyone have a measurement on an Aimpoint T-1 with the Daniel Defense mount? It looks to be as tall as the LT660 mount that I alrerady have. I need something slightly lower. Seems like the GGG and LT 660HK are the two mounts that are a little lower than the LT660.
|
|
|
Hopefully this is useful.
I found a post that said the rail to the center of the PA Gen 2 MicroDot mounted on an LT661 is .94, this coupled to the STG rail of .960 comes out to 1.90 which is the same as the AUG A2 optic. Jeff |

Is the .700" for the STG E4 rail confirmed? Still has the question mark...
Thanks. |
|

You have AR15 comb to top of rail height as .530. Is M4 height different? What about HK MR556 ARtype?
|
|
|
This is the rail height you list.
XM17E4: 0.700 AUG USA A3: 0.590 It seems to me that visually, the A3 rail height is taller than the E4 rail height. Am I wrong? |

Looks like an AUG M1 scope is around 2.75" That's not really precisely mic'd, but what the tape measure made it look like.

Think about if you're one of them MSAR owners that had fallen for that Gig.
With the optic stuck right about the top of the stock. Wait a second.... I can see my target now.. My friend Bengay is included in my Range bag. |
