flip a coin or buy whatever one you prefer, regardless both are fine choices. Me personally I stick with 870's for commonality with all my other shotguns.
870's get the nod IMHO as better for a pistol grip because of the location of the safety, on 500's you have to take your shooting hand off the grip to disengage the safety on top of the receiver 500's get a slight nod for being a bit more ambidextrous of a gun in a traditional stock configuration with the safety on top of the receiver |

I do not have to move my hand from the grip to push the safety to fire, but I do slightly to put it on safe. The A1 is the thicker barreled model, dual claw extractors, metal trigger group, the feed elavator stores tucked up and away so you can load the mag tube easier. Yes the ejector is a bitch if it breaks. Lasty there are a SHIT ton of police trade in 590a1 for sale right now, in the $275 range with surefire lights... Get both.  |

Mossberg 500 / 590
The main reason is the magazine tube. On the Mossberg, it's threaded into the receiver...this means I can swap out a two round tube for an 8 round tube, or anything in between. I also like the light weight aluminum receiver, but that's second to the mag tube. |

My 590a1 SBS arrived at my SOTs on Friday and looks great, and even had a One small ding on the receiver and a little barrel wear but overall, it was better than I expected!! Form 4 goes out today (trust), so hopefully only 90 days or so.

I've always been a mossberg fan but I went 870 with mine solely for the position of the magazine tube and to get the shortest possible barrel without having to modify anything. I went 12.5" and with chokes I can still get great patterns and also a salvo if I decide.

All 11 were present, but one was missing the front sight -- I'm guessing that when the box split a corner from being mishandled en route, the sight was knocked off. Otherwise, all appear fine: A few storage and handling marks (mostly on the receivers and buttstocks; the barrels and tubes are perfect). Most appear unfired, or fired very little, though all have been racked a lot during drills. The serial number of one is the month, year and day that I turned 18, so I'm keeping that one; the SN of another is the year and month that my son the SOT was born, so he's keeping that one. Out of 11 examples ... what are the odds of that happening?

Mossberg decided to stop selling 14" front end parts to "civilians". Apparently police aren't civilians anymore because Mossberg is happy to sell to your LE agency or the DoD.
The non-NFA 14" Mossberg didn't set well with them apparently. Prices for 14" parts have skyrocketed. |
