I'm not rich I;m not poor but I only want to have 4 calibers. I have .45acp, 5.56 and recently added 9mm in the form of a G19. I'm missing a larger caliber rifle now. Military surplus firearms have not really sparked to much interest in me. I was mildly interested in an m14 but in my location I think maybe a bolt action might make a little more sense as the Ar15 pretty much fills the SD and 0-300yd role. I was and am interested in a firearm similar to a CZ 550 with a full stock. But I'm not sure what caliber to choose, Ive been tending to lean towards 30-06. I was interested in the Scar 17 but its just to far out of my range for a firearm that would be slanted more towards longer range and hunting. Any suggestions? different caliber? firearm?
EDIT: i should add that I want fixed irons on it be whatever it is, hence my like of the 550 |

I trimmed my rifle calibers down to .223, .308, .338WM, and 50 BMG.
It works for me. If I only had 2 rifle calibers, it would be .223 and either .308 or .300 win mag, depending on what/where I planned to hunt. |

I personally would say .308 for caliber choice but 30-06 is also a great choice. If you are comfortable with an AR platform which I am assuming you are I would look into the new DPMS G2 rifles. They are light compared to most other .308 ARs on the market and at least one of the new models should fit your requirements. They are also priced very competitively to anything else on the market.

I was heavily thinking this. I am most familiar with the Ar platform. I had a vepr at one time it was cool but lack of parts availability is a negative to me. i was keeping my eye on a few companies making LW receiver sets for a .308 based rifle. Cross compatibility is a plus also lancers new .308 mags.

while i would agree wholeheartedly with the savage bolt in 30-06 or 308 (i have both) don't you want to make big holes?
i'd say a lever action in 45-70 you dont get a lot of range, but they can be a lot of fun plus they come with irons as far as ammo availability, you really cant go wrong with 308, 30-06 or even .300 win mag but if irons are a necessity, i'd find that a great excuse to get an AR platform in 308. |
|
Actually looking at the DPMS GII someone mentioned it does look like a very promising platform to me. I prefer Lightweight rifles.
|
|
CMP service grade Garand and as much ammo from them as you can afford.
|
|
I'd get a .308 bolt gun to cover your long range needs.
Then I'd get a 308 Garand to share ammo with it. |
|
I would also go with .308/7.62x51. I narrowed my calibers to .22LR,9mm,5.56x45,7.62x39,7.62x51/.308 & 12g. I would like to add a larger hunting/long distance round such as 300WM. If I were in your shoes, I would rid myself of one of the pistol calibers and replace it with a rifle caliber.

.308s are pretty practical for a lot of things.
An AR-10 type carbine, a bolt action precision rifle for longer range fun, and punching tight groups, and a light, sporter weight rifle for hunting all in .308 and you would be set very nicely. I actually need to consolidate my wide range of rifle cartridges down to just a few. The older I get the less time I have. I would rather spend it outdoors than at my loading bench. |

I've got a bunch of 30 cal guns.
The one I shoot the most is 300 Weatherby Magnumb in a Howaby Vanguard. For lightweight bolt stuff I use a 270. Dare to be different and run down a 99 Savage in 308. Not a bolt gun but will do everything a 308 bolt gun can do. The cool factor is off the charts. |
|
I'm thinking of going with a .308 of some kind. I really like the Scar but I'll have to save for a long while for it. I also like the DPMS GII as I'm familiar with Ar's, I want to go with a lighter platform so its pretty much between those two. I like bolt action's but semi auto makes more sense for me. i do sorta dig new tech.

Ruger SR 762 is the poor mans Scar IMO. I'll be buying one in the not too distant future.

I am still going the other way,
Just added 260 Remington 6.8SPC 7mm Rem Mag. have been looking at a 338 or 300win. I do not use these for range shooting but are going to be for hunting and I do not see the need to have a stockpile of ammo for them and feel 100-500rds are plenty. On the other had the calipers I have enough to last me the rest of my life are 30-06 308 45acp 9mm 8mm 8x54 22lr |

If it's something that you plan on keeping for a very long time, and you get a substitute you will regret it in the long run. Just keep on saving, and when you finally reach your goal (SCAR 17), it will feel like when you got your first nut. Ask me how i know. |

1. SCAR- my next gun currently in layaway
2. FNAR- not a go to war gun, but can be used for hunting and long range shooting. Mags are expensive, but mine is a tack driver. 3. Bolt action .308, but make sure you upgrade magazine capacity. |

7.62x51 NATO (.308). Very effective round and obviously very widely available.
|
|
6.5x55 is nice. It is also very good for iron sights since it has very little drop.
|
|
I would go with 30-06 because all the cway through the panic I could find it. Where as 308 and .223 was hard to find sometimes. If you were going AR style I would go AR10 with 308

Your desire for iron sights will limiting your choices a little bit. As for .30-06 or .308... I'd go with the .30-06 if you will also be getting an M1 garand. .308 will give you the flexibility to add an AR10 variant later on without adding another caliber. If I were in your shoes, and needed 1 rifle to do a lot of different things, I'd go with the Ruger GSR in whatever barrel length you prefer.
All around: Ruger GSR *Incredibly versatile, comes with irons. Hunting: Ruger American *It is extremely light, accurate, and it's far cheaper than every other option I've listed. Cool: M1 Garand in .30-06 *Way too fun to shoot, is a piece of American history, but it will be impractical for hunting Tactical: M&P10 or SR762 *Easy to customize, accurate, semi-auto. Odd that a lot of my suggestions tended towards Ruger. Not a brand loyalist by any means, I just really think those are good picks. |

30-06 is the most versatile choice boltaction semiautos C&Rs ect
