My Ruger Mk II Stubby (Page 1 of 9)
Arrow Left Previous Page
Page / 9
Posted: 4/29/2020 10:15:17 PM EDT
So, I've been hot to build up a very specific MkII pistol, and the pieces finally came together.

First, I spotted this gem on Armslist for the ridiculous price of just $175:

Gun's in great shape, came with two mags, did the deed same day in the Home Depot parking lot in under 5 minutes.  How do I not take that deal?  I don't like skinny barrels, or those big, rubber "finger grips."  Well, neither was going to be a problem.  After searching around for a bit, I landed on a pair of Pachmayr Renegade Laminate wood grips.  Nice and slender.  Now for that barrel.  I sent it Dave Wilson for a little nip here and a little tuck there, and today I got this back:

Oh, that looks nice.  With a full-size thread protector, it almost looks factory.

Well, OK.  Maybe not.  I haven't decided on the front sight yet.  I'm thinking either changing the rear sight to an adjustable, and having the front drilled/tapped for the matching front, or just having a dovetail cut and adding a lower front sight to match the fixed rear.  I'm also leaning heavily to removing the rear sight altogether and adding a Burris Fastfire 3.  Decisions...

But, I know some are already asking "WTF did you do that?"  Well, 'cuz I always wanted this:

That's my Form 1 can on the front.  Looks pretty cool.  Here's my AAC Element II:

The Sig SRD22X can looks kind of funky here:

But the Oculus in the short mode looks pretty cool:

Haven't been able to shoot it unsuppressed yet.  Not sure the neighbors would appreciate that, but suppressed, it runs like a champ with AE Suppressor and Federal Bulk Pak.

Fun project, and I'll be interested in seeing how it runs without the can.  It's certainly a hoot in "quiet mode."

The MK4 takedown is patented. Something like the Tandemkross Kraken is the closest aftermarket option.

I need a Mk III frame so I can dual-wield my TACSOL and eventually chopped factory upper

3-D print a lower?  I have a Mk 2 that needs a pistol grip, I should investigate.

To be fair, the "lower" is also where all the expensive parts are, so it's not shocking they're $$$ but year, seem a bit much!!!!

I didn't know this existed.

Yeah, but if you're already installing grips and VQ trigger, why not buy a stripped lower?

Finally part of the Stubby club.  Just picked it up and installed a 507K dot.  The bolt is an upgraded Volquartsen unit.  It’s DLC coated and houses their firing pin and extractor.  Hopefully I’ll get to shoot it tomorrow.  Here it is next to my MKIV Target.

It’s the Enhanced Systems sidewinder grip module. It can accept the FAB Cobra stock for Glock pistols, making it an SBR.

It’s actually pretty comfortable from a grip stand point, now to decide if I actually want to SBR a MKIV upper 😂

I'm not interested in SBR'ing mine, they just look really comfortable. Thanks!

Where is everyone getting their barrels shortened for the Ruger pistols?

I emailed Morgan at https://class3machining.com/ in early March and he replied with:

Can cut, crown and thread it for 90 if just upper is sent.

Then just include a prepaid return label, most of my customers use pirateship.com

5-7 business day turnaround

I think I need to get my butt in gear and mail him my OEM upper for a chop.

He's not doing them right now but I had mine done by D.Wilson.

No experience with them, but MK3 Firearms work looks good.

Is there a reason why D. Wison and a lot of others stopped doing it?
Link Posted: 5/20/2023 12:30:30 AM EDT
[Last Edit: aksahsalahs] [#22]
Pretty sure D.Wilson stopped due to the time involved in machine setup and work.

The barrel to receiver tolerances are pretty loosey-goosey which makes it more difficult to thread the barrel when it’s not square/true to the receiver.

He posted a video on the run out once, it was pretty wild.

Edit:  video is back on page 6.

Money. Same reason Morgan from class three stopped doing anything other than threading. Anyone who is good has more work than they know what to do with so they focus on higher profit stuff usually. I think it was D Wilson who did the one I want by machining the barrel stub so the can directly threaded onto it(might have been someone else). Really clean setup and gave you the max barrel length without adding OAL.

Two reasons really.

The first is because they are somewhat challenging and time consuming to do correctly. When you cut them really short like 2.1" or so, you have to hold the receiver in the chuck. Since the barrels never seem to be threaded into the receiver straight, you have to be able to correct for axial and radial runout when you indicate them in. I have a pretty specialized ($4-5K) lathe chuck to be able to do them.

The second and bigger reason is the customers. You would not believe the petty crap that people whine about with these Ruger's. It's literally the biggest PSO pot metal mass produced .22 LR pistol. It's a piece of shit, but people think they are buying a damn Holland and Holland with their grandma's last dollar. It's a short .22 that you can expect soda can accuracy at 10 yards.

Wow...I'm not a machinist, but those little needles bouncing all over leads me to believe these things are pretty far from "straight and true" from the factory

Might be time for me to send my factory MK III upper in.

ETA: order placed. Now to box up the OEM upper and get it to Mr. Wilson. Figure my TAC SOL threaded upper will hit the EE once I have the little guy in hand.

As for moving the front sight, the standard front sight can be cut down in height, shortened front to back, and moved back to the scope mount hole on the receiver.

This one still needs a little trimming to the front to be flush with the front of the receiver.

Excellent post!  Velocity is quite acceptable.

I could only wish I had the scope mount holes that come with the newer guns.  This was a bolt on solution using the dovetail groove, with a Riton RDS:

I traded a Taurus for it and had Gem-Tech thread it a long time ago.
