Slowly putting together my collection of Smith and Wesson pre-lock 357 revolvers. I am quickly finding out what an expensive collection this is to do. From top left and going left to right: 19-4, 66-1, 686 no dash, 13-1 (or 3, cant remember), 586, 28-2 S-prefix S/N, 520, 640-1 pro series, 629-1 Lew Horton edition (not 357, but its S&W, so its in the picture). 3rd gen semi-autos: 4006, 1006, 5903, 5906. The set of grips is a pair of N-frame combat grips that I got at a pawn ship for $30.

I am still looking for models 27, 681 (maybe a 581), 65, and 4506 to round out both of these collections.

you should have started 11 years ago like I did

nice collection.

To round out the collection ( nice so far) you'd need about 20 non magnum k frames and rim fires.
Then start on the j's too. Considering the incredible variety of smith revolvers made over 100 plus years ( let alone the crazy third gen auto variations)
It may never end. Some collectors specialize in one model ( let's say the model 19/66 k 357's) and with this single model end up with 30 variations or more.

While I realize that I could plumb the depths of a true smith collection, I have decided to focus my efforts on a narrow segment that really interests me. I am wanting to acquire a nice example of the major pre-lock 357 models. From there, who knows what i'll branch out to. But for now, my personal collection would be complete with the aforementioned models.

I am not looking forward to putting up the bucks for a nice model 27, because I want a like new example with the box. Gonna be eating ramen for a few months to afford that one

That is a nice start and you got some deal on the FGC grips! They are usually over $225. S&W revolvers are a very large field and while I have accumulated a few of them, I think when starting a real collection it is hard to see the end of the road.

You will also need to get into factory original accessories, like the cleaning kits and so on and if you haven't visited the Smith & Wesson forum, I would recommend that.

I always keep some spare FGC around.

Nice collection.

You need more snubbies and a model 25/625.  My 625 with 3" barrel has become one of my favorite Smith Revolver.

Looks great OP.

Don't have a photo all together yet, but my S&W collection (all pre-lock, pre-MIM) so far is:

66-2 4" .357

19-3 4" nickel NIB .357

686-4+ 4" NIB .357

686-4+ 6" w/original box .357

4 screw 1958 pre-Model 28 4" .357

28-2 6" .357

28-2 6" .357

60-4 3" 38SPL

67-1 4" 38SPL

10-6 4" 38SPL

63 no dash 4" .22LR

5 screw 1952 pre-Model 17 K-22 Masterpiece 6" 22LR

629-4 6" 44 Mag

Safety Hammerless Lemon Squeezer 4" in .38 S&W

Just started collecting revolvers less than a year ago. Those are just the Smiths. Gotta Colt DS snubbie, and a Ruger 6" GP100, 2.75" Service Six, and a 1958 6.5" Flattop Blackhawk in 44 Mag. Wheel guns are a nasty addiction.

Need more 3rd Gen semi's, but a 1006 (10MM) and a 3914 (9MM) has got me on my way in that category.

Although its not my gun, here is a 66-2 that a guy that recently retired from the PD I work for carried since the '70's. The PD bought some of them and he was the only one left that carried one. When he retired, he turned it in (since it was the PD's gun), the Chief had me take it home and clean it up, then it was presented to him. Damn nice gun with a SWEET trigger! As always, I'm NOT a professional photographer and the pics were taken with my ancient point-and-shoot camera on my high tech kitchen table photo studio.

Honest wear on the grips from being carried for MANY years.

It's rare but not particularly valuable or collectable. It gets ran hard but always cleans up well.

It's a "357" (pre model number).

Thanks. I'm quite fond of it. While I had these in mind I found one literally right around the block from me. We were broke so I about had to beg my wife to get it.

It looks better with the original grips.
