This is a sling mounting solution I came up with last week in Kabul. A co-worker of mine has a Russian under folder and the rear sling loop that he was using to attach his single point sling to had broken off.

I did have a Leatherman tool and some 550 cord, and this is what I came with. I liked it so much I did it to my AMD and took pictures to share how it was done.

First, you remove the grip and cut a notch just deep enough for two sections of 550 cord to fit through.

Second, you take a 2 cent piece of 550 cord and tie a knot in it at the appropriate location.

Third, place the piece of 550 cord in the grip with the loop hanging out of the notch you cut and reinstall the grip.

You are done!

Is that cheek piece homemade or did you buy it somewhere? That would be a worthwhile addition to my AMD knockoff.

The cheek piece was made by an AK builder in Dallas. I am over here giving it "the test".

Its working out well too.

Very clever, I am impressed. I never would have thought of that.

This beats the "empty casing charging handle" mod. I already did this to my AK.

why not just loop it around the grip screw?  Seems like it would be more secure.  Good idea though! +1

I'm not quite sure about that

Good idea, but I agree, loop it around the grip screw for added security instead of just relying on the knot.

That Monte Carlo cheek piece on the AMD65 stock looks like a comfortable improvement!

Yeah, I looped mine through the grip screw.

Dude we already know you don't know how to handle an AK   NOT!  Awesome vid.. my friends have enjoyed it as well!

You have a single point mount on the receiver already you dont use that one. Not concerned about bending the pistol grip screw or enlarging the hole in the receiver where the bolt goes through.

Actually I see it doesnt wrap around the grip screw, I still would be concerned about it breaking the grip then or the knot coming loose

The reason I dont use the rear sling loop is I shoot ambidextrously, yet primarily left handed. The existing sling loop is less than optimal for that.

The grip is quite strong, it can more than handle it. However, it believe it would be better to make the cut in the grip with a round file. I just did not have one avaliable here.

Thank you. Actually after I did the first one I was wondering why the idea never occured to me before.

Especially with the AK (draco) pistols. I have drilled and mounted many swivel studs on the rear trunions on those.

Thanks, with this sling setup, I will be 4x as fast! On my weak side!

If you gut the 550 cord and loop it around the PG nut, you probably won't have to modify the grip.

So far, so good. The PG tightens down alright, but standing in the basement with the rifle slung isn't exactly what I'd call a definitive test.

Does it leave a gap between the grip and the receiver?

I can get a .006 feeler gauge between the grip and the receiver next to the 550 cord.
The jury will be out on whether my suggestion will work as well as your modification until I've had an opportunity to do a meaningful test.

Update: Regarding the long term durability of this mod.

Since I have posted I have left my rifle hanging by its sling when not in use. I have been on one 4 hour convoy and one 4 hour foot patrol.

During the convoy and the patrol I let the rifle hang and bounce, only loosly keeping control of the rifle by the pistol grip.

So far, so good.

ETA: Sweet! Page two ownage on my own thread.

For the record, Joe isn't taking pictures in his basement. That man is humping A-stan with his AMD. Theres not a more "meaningful test" to be had.

Well, I guess you could. I dont one one handy at the moment to try it.

I suppose since there are a million different sling loops for the AR out, nobody thought of it.

Give it a try, and post pics.

Neat ,thanks for posting.

On a side note, what type of pistol is in your vest. The rear site looks Smith & Wessonish?

Stay safe over there...................

Good eye. That is a Smith and Wesson Sigma. I know,

However, it is what they are issued and we need to carry what we train them to use.
