OK- my only rifle thats an ak (variant) is a robarms VEPR II. The issue is its 5.56, long barrel (~21" I want to say, cant remember), kind of hefty, and uses specific mags/ furniture. For a while now, I wanted a new akm that has a 16" barrel, less than 8 pounds, shoots 7.62x39, uses surplus mags/ commonly found furniture, and less than $650. I went all over the place considering everything from wasrs to saigas to stretching the budget for an slr107. I even bought magazines for a waffen works 5.45 I was this close >< to buying. And after all that time and criteria, what did I end up with?

...a 23.2" VEPR in .308 So basically, I'm right where I started before with the other VEPR. It was an impulse buy way out of left field. I remember not that long ago when centerfire had VEPRs on sale for $500-$600 and I waffled for too long. When I saw this rifle on sale for $600 shipped from legion usa, I bought it. Literally just picked it up a few hours ago

Its a nice rifle- the metal fit and finish is immaculate. The wood could use a little work even though its finished furniture. The sling swivel choice confuses me. Overall, I'm happy but I'm still looking for the right x39 akm.

Threw an ak74 style brake on the wasr (7.62 obv) to see how it worked out...pretty happy. Definately a reduction in felt recoil and muzzle climb. Not that it was horrific in the first place but interesting nonetheless.
