I checked the site, and didn't see a thread for this, (sorry in advance if there is one and I didn't see it) so I'm making this a thing.  I'm looking to get away from Hoppe's.  All of their stuff is pretty good, but I'm sure there's something better out there.  What do y'all use/recommend?

Fireclean... It really does do what it claims and seems to do it better the longer you use it.

Currently using Rem Oil but soon to make the switch to Breakfree instead. Remington doesn't offer Rem Oil in the spray bottle anymore!!! What a bummer for me cuz I like Rem Oil better than Breakfree.

Ever since I received a free sample of SLIP2000 a couple years ago that's all Ive used. It replaced an oil I had been faithfully using since the mid 90s. SLIP is non toxic, doesn't smell and seems to coat parts and stay put better than quite a few others I've tried. Good stuff fo sho!

This is a subject that folks get very fired up about here .
I will get torn apart for not saying that brand X isn't ten times better than brand Y

I have been hanging out at a busy gun club for almost 30 years and have hung out and worked part time at a shop for about 2 or 3 years.

Lots of firearms have crossed my hands in all that time and the only times lubrication was an issue it had nothing to do with the type but either total failure to use any lube at all or using a ton and having it get all gouped up.

For the record I use a bit of grease on semi autos rails like a 1911 , grease on a Garand or M1 carbine and Breakfree CLP on most anything else including wiping down guns for storage for rust prevention . I will use silicone spray to clean and lube magazines.

Pick a brand that works for you and use it

I've been using M-Pro 7 cleaner and oil on my beretta so when I finished my first AR not too long, I use that on the AR as well.  Love that it's non toxic and pretty much odor free so I can do it inside no problem and it does the job..  Been hearing a lot about Fireclean lately so I want to see what that's all about as well.

Mobil 1 synthetic $6 a quart for a lifetime supply. Have been using it for many years on all my firearms. Never felt the need to chase the "snake oil" gun lubes.

it really is the only thing anyone needs.  The testing done on this, properties, extreme limits on both ends of the spectrum, protection, availability, and cost make this the absolute best there.

If people knew the testing that mobil 1 did they'd stop spending ridiculous monies on snake oils

What is the final word on what weight to use for firearms? I've been wanting to get some forever but I've seen 0w40 on up and couldn't decide.

5w or 10w, no need to over think it really.  I actually mix mine with the motorcyle oil

I use Breakfree... Convienent bottle sizes, holds up well. Plus one of those impregnated gun rags.

I have never tried M1 on firearms, only in my vehicles.

But after paying $8 for 2oz of Slip, which I like and use now,  this works out to be $125 per quart or about three barrels of crude oil at today's trade price

Personally I use Shell Rotella 10w30 Full Synthetic if that helps.

Guess what, it works GREAT

I'll bet your gorilla likes to see you, your whale, not so much.

Another fan of mobile one. I also use LaRue machine gun grease, Lucas Oil gun oil and CLP.  I have a big can of molybdenum grease "borrowed" from the Army for my Garand and M1A.

You may also want to check out Fireclean. A buddy of mine let me borrow some because I forgot to relube my rifle yesterday after cleaning(I use grease) and sweet mother of god I have never had my rifle function so smoothly.

Not to mention I am still having black crap oozing out of my rifle, my guess is it is missed fouling. Stuff is like magic, I noticed considerable faster and smoother loading of rounds as the BCG goes into battery.

I run my AR's and 1911 wet.  And I only want the very best for my guns.  So when it comes to lube, I go to Wal-Mart and buy the cheapest dino-based ATF I can find.  The last time I purchased some, I picked up the bottle pictured below.  This stuff doesn't blow off much during shooting, but I take a small bottle with me to the range just in case.  I clean my AR's after several trips to the range, and it's mostly a wipe down affair.  If I need a deeper cleaning, I'll mix some of the ATF with some acetone and kerosene from Home Depot, in a loose approximation of Ed's Red, and that brew cuts through carbon like nobody's business.

If I'm storing a gun for an extended period of time, I'll apply a light coat of Breakfree CLP.  I've learned not to over-think lube, and focus on other things, like buying ammo and trying to figure out why I can't hit the broad side of a barn.

It's funny, some of the most vicious cyber-fights on the interwebs happen on lube threads, whether it's a gun board or car board.
