So I was removing the barrel nut off my upper and I dont know if it was torqued so much that it took about 30 minutes of trying to get it off with the proper tools. Once that was done I noticed a small half inch crack on the right side on the upper. its located near the bottom right corner of the dust cover. I had the upper placed on a "flipper" vise tool and used a standard barrel nut wrench. I guess my question is, will this crack cause problems to the rifle while operating and would a gunsmith be able to repair something like this? Is it worth fixing or should i just buy a new stripped receiver? Its a RRA upper although I didnt buy it directly from RRA.

Greatwun, I recommend you go with a new upper receiver. Shop around you can sometimes purchase new or used for $100.00 plus. Yes, I have my own set broken parts over the years.  Pick up a top notch barrel wrench which pay for it self soon.  Semper Fi & Be safe, Mark

Yeah new upper receiver time. Here's one at Bravo Company in stock. I linked the non-M4 ramped receiver. They have the M4 ramped recevier in stock as well. You should be able to use your old forward assist and dust cover parts.

Also, pick up a DPMS panther claw from them while your at it.

Thanx to everyone for your quick responses. I ended up just buying a new recevier from a member on these boards. And Im gonna get a gun smith to install the barrel nut on and properly torque it. The GS wanted to charge $20 to replace the old barrell nut and put on the new one but said I had to leave the upper with him for a few days. Guess I was too impatient and didnt know what I was in for.

If I might make a point to hopefully prevent anyone else from experiencing this problem.  The "Flipper" is not intended for use during installation/removal of the barrel nut.  That act requires the use of an upper receiver vise block (Pictured here:  http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/Store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=25011 ).  The Flipper is fine for holding the upper/lower receiver in place for less stressful things like sight work, or small parts installation/removal but it does not support the upper in the same way as the vice block for barrel work.  Hope this helps.

Wish Id known that sooner. Went to a gun show last weekend and was actually looking for the vise block but none had one up for sale but I saw a lot of flippers and DMPS claws and the seller I got it from told me it would work. Guess you gotta learn things that hard way sometimes.

I'd like to add that if you're removing a barrel for the first time; you'll need a vise block like mentioned above. But in addition, depending on the manufacturer you might need to heat up the barrel nut to loosen any threadlock placed there by the manufacturer. My brother did the same thing as pictured above, even though we had a vise block.

Well, you've got a mighty fine paperweight there.

I have one of the PRI blocks that I use for light work and holding the upper in place when it won't be subjected to a lot of torque.  Wes at MSTN uses one of the PRI blocks for all of his barrel installs though.  I use a Brownell's clam shell action block for anything where I'm going to have to really bear down on the receiver.

This cosmetically
blemish receiver is fully functional & completely to mil spec. It's
the perfect upper for that first time self assembled AR-15 rifle.

I have one but never use it for high-torque stuff, usually only for installing buffer tubes.  I very much prefer the type that pins on the upper through the takedown pin holes, and then turn the whole thing sideways in the vise with a wood block on the other side.

A flipper is nice to hold a receiver to work on it, but not to put on or take off a barrel. I think it's time for a new upper.

SouthPaw.  I'd thought of making something like this for sights, FA, light wieght work.  Now I have a reason not to make it myself.

Personally I'd never use something that only supplied pressure at two points, think Crescent Wrench,  to any removal / iinstallation
of a nut / bolt.  If Idid not have to.

Quib is correct.  Tool for every job and a job for every tool.

Think I'll order one of these.  I'll still use an action block with insert to remove and install barrels.

Several days past a young Deployed Soldier asked questions about how to TIG on forged parts.  Hope he can wright back and
maybe some of use can donate our FUBB of FUBAR mistakes so he can learn to UFIT for us.
