The split kind are real roll pins.

The coiled type you seem to me to be asking about are more commonly referred to as "spring pins", or "coil spring pins", which may help you locate them online, though both the coiled and split type also get referred to as "roll pins" and are used in pretty much the same applications.

Split roll pins are the standard because they're what Colt uses, so everyone copies them.

However, coiled roll pins are much easier to install and there are a few AR manufacturers that use them... RRA uses them for sure, though I think Spikes Tactical, Stag Arms and Anderson use them as well.

I buy the coiled roll pins from RRA.

I got a bag of taper pins on Amazon.  With Prime, it was cheap.  I can send you a couple, if you want.

You're saying the spring/ rolled pins suck?  Curious why you would say that?  They are so much easier to install.  Sure you can file the edges of the C type pins but why when you can just used the spring/ rolled pins.

The ones I tried were cheapies and I ended up punching the coils out during install/removal.

I use the split type without issue.

You mean the slotted spring pins that were in the original design?

Oh, and if you choose to use spiral coiled spring pins, be careful which ones you get. Most types of coiled spring pins are actually a deal weaker than the slotted spring pins.

Coiled spring pins come in three types: light, standard, and heavy duty.  Only the heavy duty are as strong as the correct slotted spring pins.

+1 for McMaster, you'll use them eventually. If there's a specific coiled spring pin you need, and don't want to buy 100, send me an IM.

No doubt LOL. These things are hard steel, I can't even bend them with pliers:

The coiled type came with my Anderson parts kit and thought they gave me the wrong parts. (I didn't know what they were called until I saw this thread).
