I believe that when you salt bath nitride the two metals you have specified that the nitrided surface ends up harder and more rust resistant on the stainless than it does on the 4150. I'm not 100% sure on that, but a quick Google search will tell you.

Actually its the opposite (I know, boggles the logical mind, right?). 400 series stainless steel is actually less resistant to corrosion than 4150 carbon steel. However, once nitrided the properties of both are nearly identical at the nitrocarburized surface. |

yea I'd go for the 4150. To be fair, I've never liked stainless, but 4150 still looks better with price.

The QPQ treatment will make them both very corrosion resistant, but the 4150 will handle heat better.

We shot my fiancée's AR for the first time 2 weeks ago. We have the Faxon 16 inch 4150 barrel you mentioned in option 1 and it is very nice and accurate.
