I have a 14.5" barrel and it's not assembled yet.  I bought a Phantom (the spiked kind) online, and still have to have it attached before assembling the barrel to my upper.  A friend of mine ordered a vortex a few weeks ago, and when it didn't come in he ordered it from somewhere else.  He canceled the first order, but they sent it to him anyway.  So now he has two vortex's, and he said I can have one.

Which one would you guys pin and weld on?  I'll leave the decision up to you, because I can't decide.

i went with the phantom as the vortex is a little too pointy for me.

I'm afraid my friend will be offended if I decide to go with the Phantom.  It's 50/50 right now for me.  Still can't decide.

I've seen three Vortex hiders of different vintage blossom and fail I would not permanently attach one.

IT'S A 14.5" BARREL!!!

But I do like the old 3-prong FS.  If only they made a longer one...

The new Vortex is great. I prefer it to my spiky Phantom. Go with the Vortex.

Vortex, looks like the flick of a bic lighter at night from semi auto and a 14.5 bbl.

My buddy just called me up and the second Vortex just came in.  It appears to be a knock-off, he said.  He's gonna send it back, and I'm putting in an order with G&R as soon as they're available.

I've decided to go with the Vortex because it can be attached using the "four equidistant tack welds" method.  It has a shoulder that sleeves itself over the barrel a little bit, and it doesn't need a washer of any kind, lending itself to easy attachment with a welder.  I prefer this to pin and weld or silver solder because a dremel with a cutoff wheel can be used to remove it fairly easily if needed.

IMHO, the Phantom looks a lot better and gets the job done.

Yea I like the looks of the Phantom better, too.  I already have a Phantom on one of my other uppers (the newer, non-spiked 5-port version), so it'll be good to have the vortex just to have something different.

Vortex's FH'ing ability is only marginally better then than Phantom's. It's downsides (prongs getting snagged, bent, broken and the weird harmonics (ringing) sound they produce) are major.

Why put up with major disadvantages for one minor advantage?

Get them both!  The phantom is only $25.

Who makes the Phantom?  How does it compare to the A2 hider?

The Phantom is made by Yankee Hill.  Not sure how it compares to a A2 hider since I have never shot one of them at night.

It doesn't matter anyway because I can only attach ONE of them to my barrel.

I've been talking with Ron Smith to see if he would build a special Big Bore Vortex for .458" guns and up - so yes I'd get a Vortex - besides I already own a Phantom!!!

Can anybody else confirm this?

I can confirm the ringing sound. I have one on my .223 Remington 700. You don't have the buffer spring noise of an AR so the ringing is really loud. I always get weird looks from the shooters around me at the range.

My M4gery with a perm attached Vortex gives a slight ringing sound.  Look at the design.  It is like a four prong tuning fork.

I love it!  It sounds kind of like Ed Grimly playing his triangle.  "We're as doomed as doomed can be."

Hmm.

I assume that the ringing persists somewhat. Could it compromise your location?

G&R just got some vortexes in stock and I ordered it.  Now I will have both a vortex and a phantom side by side and a difficult choice.  I'm still leaning toward the vortex, just because I already have an upper with a phantom.
