Newbie-ish question...
Looking for a flashlight to keep in my purse so the size on that looks about right for me, but:
Is 1 hour run time normal for this size of flashlight?
Is that 1 hour for the batteries or the bulb?
The runtime is for the batteries. Modern LED lights will never burn out in normal usage. The G2 is an incandescent light, and is a great one for the money, but the bulbs cost a fair bit to replace and battery life is poor.
You can get LED dropins, and I've got everything from the expensive Malkoffs to the DX and ebay cheapies. The Malkoff and Surefire drop-ins are expensive, sturdy, and reliable. The cheapies are cheap and not so reliable - sometimes they don't work at all in a G2 unless you fiddle with them, removing or cutting springs and such, due to the G2's plastic body. I've had several that only worked part of the time.
I wouldn't use an incandescent light for a purse or pocket light, for a variety of reasons - poor battery life, fire risk if they turn on without you noticing, too much bulk and weight.
For a purse or pocket light, it's hard to beat the Fenix P2D or L1D LED lights. They're both great lights, small and sturdy, and you have the choice of long runtime or quite a bit or light output.
You can get them from
www.fenix-store.com with an 8% discount using the CPF8 discount code from candlepowerforum, but they're not cheap even with the discount.
Both are multi-mode lights, which take a little getting used to, but are very flexible. The first mode gives low-medium-high-SOS, and the second mode is turbo/strobe. The levels are selected by the tailcap button, and the modes are selected by twisting the head tight (turbo) or not tight (normal). I usually leave mine in normal, and don't need turbo that often.
The P2D uses a single CR123, which isn't as readily available as AAs, but gives more output. Low/med/high/turbo is 9/40/80/135 lumens, and battery life is 71/13/5/2 hours. The low mode is useful for reading maps and other close up work where you don't want to blow out your night vision, and gives great runtime, while the turbo mode is plenty bright for reaching out and lighting stuff up.
The L1D is the same thing with a single AA, which is available nearly everywhere, but doesn't give the same output on turbo, has less runtime, and is a bit longer and skinnier than the P2D. Low/med/high/turbo is 9/40/80/90 lumens, and battery life is 25/5/2/1.5 hours. Turbo is not noticably different from high, and I rarely bother using it.
There's also the L2D 2xAA version, with brighter turbo and longer runtime, but it's a lot longer light - not nearly as compact. Low/med/high/turbo is 9/40/80/135 lumens, and runtime is 55/40/10.5/4/2.4 hours, which is great if you don't mind the extra length.
If you're up for CR123 batteries, the P2D is a durn near perfect every day carry (EDC) light, and I always have one in my pocket. If you'd rather stick with AAs, the L1D is nearly as good, and if the length isn't a problem, the L2D is the best of both worlds.
