I want to know if the gun was a franken build and how much the mag release was threaded into the mag release button.  I bet tightening it a few turns for proper engagement depth....

There is a stop lip on the front of a 30 rd P Mag that prevents this from happening. You can't push them in too far.

There isn't a lip on those...

I have p mags but hardly use them, but my black dog mags have chipped in that area, I found my button was a thread to tight and once fixed that stopped, wonder if thats the problem

I did the same thing a year ago.  At a Practial Rifle match, I slapped (with vigor apparently) a 20 rd PMag into the mag well of my 6920 with an open bolt.  Locked that mag in there pretty well, it took considerable effort to get it out.
