Wolf has just introduced a new .223 Remington 75 grain HPBT steel case load. This is NOT the brass case PPU 75 grain Match load produced by Prvi Partizan and sold under Wolf's Gold line. This is a brand new STEEL case 75 grain load loaded with a bi-metal 75 grain Open Tip Boattail projectile. I won't call it an OTM (Open Tip Match) as it's not a match bullet.
I had a chance to chrono some of this ammo today and so started a new thread for it. Let me start by saying it clocked quite a bit faster than I expected. I just moved to Kansas, built a range and am still finishing my new house. Most of my stuff is still packed. But I came across my old Shooting Chrony chronograph which I haven't used in years so I lugged that out. The first few shots clocked higher than I expected (2,770 fps), so thinking there was something wrong with it, I went back in the house and dug out my Oehler 35P. I used this record the following measurements. All velocities were recorded 10 feet from the muzzle at an ambient temperature of 93 degrees F at 1113 feet above Sea Level. First up Rock River 20 inch DCM Match rifle with 1-8 inch twist 2782 2774 2771 2790 2769 2783 2753 2780 2806 2771 2795 High 2806 fps Low 2753 fps Extreme Spread 53 fps AVERAGE 2779 fps Standard Deviation 14 fps OK, this was quite a bit faster then I expected, so I put another 9 across the Oehler 35 2786 2766 2782 2789 2774 2788 2763 2766 2792 High 2792 fps Low 2763 fps Extreme Spread 29 fps AVERAGE 2778 fps Standard Deviation 11 fps Surprised at it clocking well over 2,700 fps I went back inside and dug out a Colt M16A2 upper with 1-7 inch twist 2809 2777 2763 2763 2769 2755 2809 2762 2751 2773 High 2809 fps Low 2751 fps Extreme Spread 58 fps AVERAGE 2773 fps Standard Deviation 20 fps Next up I headed back to the gun room and dug out a 24 inch Les Baer Ultimate NRA Match Rifle with 1-8 inch twist 2835 2832 2821 0000 2803 2837 0000 2772 2803 2814 High 2837 fps Low 2772 fps Extreme Spread 65 fps AVERAGE 2814 fps Standard Deviation 21 fps None of you really care what it runs out of a 24 inch barrel, so back inside for a 16 inch chrome lined 1-7 inch twist with 5.56 chamber mid-length 20 rounds through this 2693 2687 2712 2663 2708 2686 2660 2715 2698 2705 2712 2676 2686 2674 2702 2671 2674 2706 2684 2696 High 2715 fps Low 2660 fps Extreme Spread 55 fps AVERAGE 2690 fps Standard Deviation 16 fps SO, lets see what we have. One 20 inch gun averaged 2,779 fps then 2,778 fps, another 20 inch gun averaged 2,773 fps. The 24 inch gun averaged 2,814 fps while the 16 inch carbine averaged 2,690 fps. This is pretty darn fast, and similar to Mk 262 Mod 1 velocities. Keep in mind, it was 93 degrees F here today. I have not put it on paper, but practical accuracy is very good. Head shots on LaRues offhand at 100 yards is no problem using a 16 inch carbine and Aimpoint. But I need to put it on paper and actually see how it is grouping. For the price, $139.95 per 500 rounds from AIM Surplus this is a heck of a deal. End result is an affordable heavy 75 grain .223 Rem load running at 2,770+ fps from a 20 inch gun and almost 2,700 fps from a 16 inch gun. Will the steel jacketed projectile fragment? I doubt it. But this is a training round. No damage at all to my steel targets shooting at 75 yards with it either. If you are looking for a heavy .223 load you can actually afford you might want to check Wolf's new offering out. Comments? |
I cannot believe they actually put that much power in that round. Thanks for the good info.
They have obviously listened to what shooters want, and they will probably reap the rewards. Other manufacturers should be taking notes.
Good to hear considering I ordered 500 rounds of it earlier today
It makes me wonder what they will be able to get out of the 110 grain steel cased 6.5mm Grendel load
I need to bang some target frames together, all I have is steel on my range at the moment.
As soon as I can put some targets up I'll shoot some groups using my 24 inch Les Baer Match rifle. That will tell us exactly what this load is capable of. With ammo this rifle likes i've shot .25 inch groups off the bench using a scope and .43 inch from position with Match iron sights...if it will shoot an honest 1.5 MOA this ammo will do anything anyone could reasonably expect from an inexpensive training load. If it does 2.5 MOA I would be quite happy and it would make a fine training load for use with carbines. I can already tell you that practical accuracy out of my 16 inch gun is fine. |
Shhhh, they might hear you and push back the release date.......again. |
Great news Dave! I just moved from Wichita KS. Where did you settle down? Did the ME winters get to you?
This stuff sounds very stout for a steel case load. I'll order a 500rd case from one of my 2 favorite ammo suppliers Thanks for the info on this stuff.
Sweet! Finally, a low cost heavy match load to supplement the good stuff (Black Hills and Hornady) for training! That is also very respectable velocity. This load should be a hit based on the early reports.
great thread.
I also do very well with pp 75gr match ammo. a little over moa easy. |
That kicks butt. Wonder if the bullet is worthy of SD?
I have to trade off this ammo with the Hornady practice I can buy for $160.00 per case. I know the Hornady is good stuff. |
How does this compare to the Hornady practice ammo? If it is more accurate and clean shooting, than the Hornady, then it is worth the $ 20.00 savings.
For starters we know that the Hornady has a proven bullet that fragments well and all the components except the case is Hornady. |
Where are you getting the Hornady from? I haven't been able to find anybody who's got it in stock. |
Hornady's LE practice ammunition is good, the question is trying to actually get it, especially if you are not LE.
....and where are you getting it for $160.00?!?!?! Hornady's LE price direct jumped to $199 per 500 as of Jan. 08. To the OP, thanks for the review, Scott |

This is GREAT news. This stuff is MUCH faster than the Prvi 75 grain match, which went 2670 from a 24" barrel. |
No kidding. If it was that cheap I would be finding an agreeable LEO and working out a deal w/ him/her. |
I interrupt this conversation for a breaking news story.
Oh, per 500. I am not LE anyway and would not sign a form saying I was. A heads up for LE, GT is also currently advertising XM193 on stripper clips for $340/900. I now return you to your regularly scheduled topic. |
Thanks for the tip guys, I've gotten their catalogs at the office here and have always been underwhelmed. Have they had these prices for a while? Thanks again and I'm not hijacking, thanks OP, Scott |
Thanks for the info. Ideally, I'd like to get a small quantity of this and the Hornady and run them in a head-to-head comparison. If I remember correctly, GT has a flat rate shipping price. That might make the Hornady and the WOLF stuff about equal per case of 500. |
This stuff seems to be right between Hornaday 75gr FPD TAP and Hornaday 75gr 5.56 TAP velocity wise. It's tempting....
Thanks for the great write up. Sounds like you are plenty busy with other things, getting moved into a not-quite finished house and all. We appreciate you taking the time to report on this.
Only thing left to test is accuracy and bullet construction, looking good so far.
Gunwritr,
If you get a chance, do you mind pulling a few rounds and giving us some feedback on average bullet weight? Also, your thoughts on bullet construction/design would be appreciated. |
Thank you Gunwritr!
The first person to post some gel tests will win the internet today!!!! |
Looking at the form, IMO just about anybody here can sigh it without lying. It says LE or "Security agent". Well I don't know about you but I am the "security agent" for my family |
it has a fairly thick bi-metal (steel) jacket
I suspect it will act like a non-fragmenting FMJ in gel it's training ammo |
Guys
Can somebody test this stuff in a 1:9 16 inch bbl pls? And do the frag test on the projo. Am I asking too much? I don't have the equipment to do this. |
I might be able to obtain some of this for review purposes. If so, I'll try to do a "shoot it into water to see what happens" test at least.
Gunwritr: I'll add your data to the factory chrono database if you don't mind. |
No but we are patiently waiting |
I ordered 500rds of this for a carbine course I am attending this weekend being conducted by DefensiveEdge (Greg "Sully" Sullivan). I will report back how it runs through my LMT MRP.
NICE. just what we need a course AAR. usually takes months to get one after a enw ammo comes out. |
