I was wondering the same. Is this stuff downloaded like the 55 grain Brit ammo?

It is underpowered.  Loaded to lower pressures to function in the SA80 rifle.  May or may not work in your AR.

Worked fine in my 1/7 20", shot up about 150 rounds of it. As accurate as the Lake City M855 and M193. I'd buy it again.  My understanding is a lot of the hotter RG stuff was sold as surplus because the SA80 takes a lighter load and could not handle full power NATO loads.  I must have got one of those lots.

Radway Green 62grain SS109 ammo?

Radway Green .223 - Any good?

I want to know if anyone has actually used this specific stuff.

And before everyone says read the tacked threads, ammo oracle and do a search, I have done all of these. I only found a few vague references to this specific lot of ammo. Only one guy said that he had used it with no problems.

Has anyone else actually shot this specific ammunition from AIM?

Yes, bought a can. Looks great, shoots just fine. Seemed hotter than wolf, and pretty close to M855 i had on hand. Same size flash.

I fired 300 rounds (2 bandoleers) of the RORG that I purchased from AIM today while at the range. I fired it  out of a 16" Bushmaster M4, and a 20" Bushmaster ER15A3. I experienced no issues with it, I will be chronographing this load on saturday and will post the results. This was definitely not underpowered ammunition from the feel of it.

Fired 180 rounds through Colt AR-15 SP-1, 1:12 twist at 100 yards, 4-5 inch groups no problems, ammo manufactured in 1992.  This supply is very good, clean, and cycles fine. Definitly not underpowered.  Fired outdoors 42F no wind.

i shot more this weekend. I brought along some Q3131A to compare it with. Shoots to the same point of impact at 100 yards out of my armalite 15A4CB 16 inch barrel. I like it so much i just ordered 2 more cans.

There has been a lot of speculation on the British Radway Green 5.56mm SS109 62gr FMJ round here on AR15.com.

The current British round is loaded to meet full NATO specifications. The L2A2 ball round is NATO qualified and NATO interoperability passed. Period!
Not under powered, typical values from a 20’ 1:7 AR 3100-3200fps @ Sea level 50F.

The problem to some AR15 users comes with the powder used in the round. Your M855 loading uses Ball powder, whilst the British round uses Cut Tubular (NNN from Muiden Chemie International, Dutch). It is loosely akin to V135 in burning rate. The case is South African produced brass (formed in the UK) of ‘military grade’  (thick/heavy) and is boxer primed. This loading develops low chamber and port pressures to match the dwell time of the British service rifle, longer than the AR15, which requires a shorter sharper punch of gas pressure.

If there are any problems, however slight in your particular AR’s gas system the lower port pressure will exploit them. Remember that predominately the round was designed for the L85A2 (SA80 mod 2) and works very well. AR15 - Try before you buy….

P.S. The L2A1 round is not in service any more, as is so often mentioned, it is surplus, which is why we sent it over the pond! As with all surplus, there are very good lots of it and very poor lots of it! Buyers beware!

Thanks ACR,do you have any idea what ammo the Brits are using in their M4s?
Link Posted: 2/13/2005 8:14:34 AM EDT
[#22]
For trg the regular L2A2.  However there are regular 'swaps' of NATO ammo, so......

But to help you:-

Radway Green also produce a Ball powder loaded version of the SS109, Still NATO spec, but not NATO inter-op. It was produced to cover the G36 (UK Police) and AR familiy of weapons. If you find any over there it is boxed up as L15A1, produced after 1999 (ish) in 30 round cartons, 900 to a 'standard' ammo can.

I burned up a little more than 400rds of it yesterday.  Zero malfunctions, pretty accurate, and clean.  I'll probably order some more next week if they still have it.

My experience with the AIM  RORG ammo.......works perfect!!!!  Wish I had some cash, I would buy more.

The comment about stick powder is correct....the gas pressure doesn't slam the bolt carrier back with the same "sprinnnnnnnnng" sound I am used to hearing with 193 ball ammo, so the recoil appears a bit milder.  I love the British stuff.

Used in my Colt 1/7  20" HBAR and my 1~7.7 Kreiger barreled spacegun.  Functions fine in both.

I shot it with a M4 and it shot great,  The best part, its on strippers and we were using one of those clear drums from Centerfire Systems,  its loader take them straight off the stripper clips.
I love when something is easy!

Damnit, I asked this and got steered away. Knowledge is power I guess, I just wish I read this thread BEFORE the gun show on the weekend, or I'd have picked some up there without paying shipping.

Will report my experience with it once it gets in from AIM.

Got one can last week, the first thing I notice was how well packed it was,the ammo looked great the stripers worked gret. I shot about 350 rounds on a 20" FN barrel 1/7 and was the same as Federal  62 grain nato. I will definetly buy more in the future but just pick up 1000 rounds of umc 55 grain for 142.00 at Bass pro shop and I got no more money on my ammo fund.h.gif

somebody asked about stripper clips guides, there were no clip guides in the ammo I got.
The other weird thing is the brown cans, I am so used to seeing our green cans!!!!!!!

Dumb question: is the "padding" on the inside of the can removable? Or is it glued or otherwise attached to the inside of the can?
Link Posted: 3/1/2005 11:01:48 PM EDT
[#43]
Yep, it is removable. Just held in by the ammo boxes themselves.
It is the same high-density foam you pay extra for in gun transit cases. So it is very useful for lining gun safes etc etc

Has anyone tried reloading this stuff yet?  I'm curious if the primer is crimped or not.  Is there anything else to watch out for when reloading it?  Would .223 rem dies work or would you need 5.56 dies?

I am stocking up on this stuff while i can afford it. When i called and ordered, i asked how much they had left. The sales ladys response was "a warehouse full"

Yes, it is reloadable, although a little on the heavy side. Therefore, reduce your charges and work up.
Primer pockets have a slight crimp on them.
Easily removed

Well, I hate to quibble but I sure would have liked to get a stripper guide with each bandoleer. Can the Brit rifles load somehow straight from the stripper clip, like topping off an M14? I don't see how they can use these without a guide.

The bandoleers are cool, kind of water-resistant material. (but no black safety pin either, oh well).

My shipment came in today, I'll shoot some this weekend weather permitting, and see how my AR likes it.

My case arrived today. The packaging is awesome with all new bandoleers and stripper clips.  The rounds themselves look really nice too. This seems to be the Aussie .308 equivalent of the 5.56 surplus market. I only wish I had more cash to spend on ammo as once this is gone I have a feeling we will not be seeing much more.

Anyone know if this was imported from Britain or somewhere else?
