This thread is ONLY about the XM855 variant, which is sold in brown or white carboard boxes, If your review is about LOOSE XM855PD, please  add your review to this thread instead.

Please add your personal experience with LAKE CITY M855 ammunition to this thread. When you do, please give information about:
1) Firearm used in
2) Approximate number of rounds fired.

Let's limit this to .223/5.56 ammunition, since this is an AR-15 forum. No offense to the guys with AR's in other calibers, but we all know that .223 chamberings are the most sensitive.

I am trying to solicit only information about your PERSONAL experience with this ammunition. If you haven't used it, then please don't clutter up the thread. Information about proper functioning (or lack thereof) is obviously the most important, but factors such as the accuracy or other peculiarities you've noticed are informative also. If you have had problems with this ammo which were severe enough to cause you to stop using this ammo, then please describe them. And one more minor request: keep your reviews objective.

This post is part of a larger information-gathering effort I'm trying to start about ALL ammunition popular in AR's:

Between my son and I, have gone thru about 800rds out of a 1,000 rd case in my DPMS Classic A2 1x9 and his Oly PCR-4 1x9, all without issue. Good stuff, all rounds in good condition in the box, definite military power and quality at a good price.

I've shot many thousands of rounds of it, (best guess is 3000+), with no problems.

Fired out of both 16" HBAR, 16" M4, 20" HBAR (various makes)

No problems here, mine was the 55 grain.
I also sold 1/2 my case to a friend who has match chambers and he had no problem with it either.

500 rds. Lake City XM-855 62 gr. for $99.99

Also i was trying to find out if the XM-885 is steel core (AP)

does anyone know?

M855 is mild steel core. It is NOT classified as armor piercing. The military (and ATF) classify it as standard ball ammunition.

So if you hold a magnet to the bullet will it hold?  My range tests all ammo to see if its steel core.  They are afraid of steel core ammo starting a brush fire after hitting a steel target...

Thats why i asked.  All that matters is if a magnet will attract the bullet.

where are the people that have had problems with this ammo? It is not good enough to just vote negative and not give feedback!

does anyone notice the dented casing. How could this affect the performance/feeding of the round? Seems like a good price.

How accurate does the LC M855 shoot out of your rifles?
I have a couple cases of it (cabelas) and havent had a chance to shoot any of it.
I have a BM 14.5 bbl 1in9 twist.
Thanks

I've fired a bunch of it out (300+rnds) out of my bushcoltoly 16"SS/HBAR frankenrifle, and my J&T/DPMS 20"HBAR. Neither rifle is chrome lined and I have not had one ammo malfunction (with any ammo for that matter) Guess I'm just lucky.

P.S. this stuff will go through 1/4" mild steel plate at 100 yards from a 20" tube, and almost all the time from a 16" barrel.

Yes! M882 9mm.  It is +P+ rated 124gr ball ammo.

Eric is the only one that has it, that I know of.

Zero problems to report with:

20" Colt 6601 1/7 HBAR (two rifles)
16" Colt 6400C 1/7 M4
16" Colt 6920 upper 1/7 M4
16" Colt 6721 1/9 HBAR
16" LMT M4 upper 1/7 M4
16" RRA 1/9 HBAR

I'm just barely into my fourth 500rd case, but I have had zero issues in all of the above referenced weapons. The 6400C and 6920 upper have had the majority of M855 trigger time (over 1200 rounds between the two of them).

What kind of accuracy are you seeing out of 1 in 9 twist barrels with LC M855?
Link Posted: 12/23/2004 1:56:41 AM EDT
[#22]
Yes - M855 has a steel penetrator in the core. The penetrator is a mild steel not a hardened steel like that used in AP ammunition.

For More on M855 (including diagrams of bullet construction) and other ammunition for the AR-15 please refer to the

I've checked the oracle a few dozen times but could not find a specific answer to which would be more accurate through a 1 in 9 twist barrel:

M855 or M193.

I know both will shoot fine through 1 in 9 barrels, but if I expect 2-3 MOA with M193 through a 1 in 9 barrel, what should I expect from M855 through the same barrel?

I think that XM193 will give superior accuracy out to 300M or so, but then the superior BC of the M855 allows it to hold a smaller group than the XM193 further out. I think bullet construction is the key rather than the twist-to-weight effects. I also remember reading that the IMI M855-Training (62 gr no steel) is better than both accuracy wise (superior BC - less surface for wind effects).

If someone More knowledgable in the accuracy department could either affirm or correct this statement it would be helpful.  ( Comments please - Overworked but Knowledgeable Mods)

Going by my recollection of stuff I've read (having never fired M855 myself),  I think you are pretty close to the current thinking.  However, I don't think its a case of M193 being more accurate to 300M, but more "effective" in terms of fragmentation and wound potential to about that range.   So, the M193 is generally preferred over M855 for defensive use (few engagements beyond 200m in modern civilian USA can be considered 'defensive')

I would imagine the 62gr bullet to be slightly more accurate in a 1 in 9 twist barrel than a 55gr bullet, because 55gr bullets were designed for 1 in 12 or faster twist barrels, and the 62gr bullet was designed for a 1 in 10 or faster twist.

I've fired 150 rnds of the PD ammo with no problems. However not very accurate out of my rifle.
Firearm is Oly Arms PCR-16.
Fired 10 rnds thru a chrony Avg velocity 2850fps Sd 34.4 16" barrel.

Was quite suprised that this was SLOWER than Santa Barbara and RG... and the Sd was MUCH higher.

I'm sorry strike that I didn't notice there was a seperate PD listing... I'll post this there.

I have used 900,000rds of  this ammo this year alone, and maybe had about 12-15k that is bad.[ split neck, bent rds, overpainting of the tips.] I link this ammo for use in M-249'S . this ammo is not military turn in's from the range. it comes directly from the LC ATK plant  in MN . just remember that this ammo is factory seconds!! and they could do what they use to do before selling it to dealers.  pull the heads, sell the powder, burn the brass and sell it as scrap. be very thankful that we can get this ammo. there is not more good deals on winchester Q3131A anymore. and remember when LC 5.56 SS109  was like gold about 2yrs ago [$300 for 1k if you can find it.] also there is a price increase coming june 1st  from LC /ATK  by 4% on there products. so stock up now.
