My current build is going to be motivated by the CAR-15 used by special forces in somalia in 92/93. i'm calling it my black hawk down carbine. i now have it down to needing era appropriate accessories.

i need..
1. flashlight & barrel mount
2. A2 carry handle mount & red dot
3. sling
4. car cheek piece

is there a way i can find out which contractors produced these items back in the early 90's?

Anyone have a lead on the Surefire barrel mounts for flashlights? Do they even make them anymore? While not BHD era, I have an ARMS 30mm carry handle mount on the way for my RO723 and am now looking for a light mount.

Came across this one   http://www.amazon.com/SureFire-Weaver-Rifles-Universal-Barrel/dp/B001V2R07W/ref=sr_1_100?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1451503684&sr=1-100&keywords=surefire+weapon+light&refinements=p_89%3ASureFire

There are some cheaper knock offs out there also

http://www.amazon.com/Flashlight-Laser-Torch-Barrel-Surefire/dp/B00FPRQQSI

used to be cheaper ones on ebay

I think they used to sell these off post at Ranger Joe's back in the day.

I'm guessing he used the holes in the handguards somehow.

Found some of my old pics that had been damaged in a house fire...

Here is "Wal-mart" at the Mogadishu airport circa feb-march '94

locals literally cut a hole in teh perimeter fence and built a hut on the outside and sold stuff those on the "inside"

Picked up a nice No1MkIII bayo with scabbard for $10..

I have a few more and some minor heat damaged negatives...need to find someone who can digitalize them..maybe repair them.

Yes, I know. And from 1989-1993, three more Aimpoints were produced and adopted. 3000, 5000, and Competition.

You are looking for the Surefire M10(light clamp) and M14(bbl mount) mounts.  I picked up a couple on eBay last year for around $20.

I'd like to apologize for misinformation.

Spoke to Larry Vickers today, who told me that the 2000 and 5000 were in use by Delta during Gothic Serpent. He said the 3000 was unpopular due to the knob being easily broken. 5000 became the standard once it was received.

I believe both were made to accommodate left or right hand shooters by simply rotating the optic. Here are some of mine, 3000 on bottom and 5000 up top. Only difference should be 1 inch vs 30 mm tubes. Now that Larry has given official clarification on what optics were used, I'll be selling off my 3000s and possibly the 5000 Mag dot I have. Like you said, 5000s are where it's at!

Love that 5000.  I just looked at mine again, it's a Mk. III, not a 3000.  I don't think the Mk III was used much by SF but maybe one of the resident experts/btdtgats(been there done that got a t shirt) guys will advise further.  The Mk III on an Ultralux makes my 727 very top heavy.  Never handled one with the 3000/5000 on it.

I suspect the difference is what Colt called the M4, and what the military adopted as the M4.

There are many different variations of the 3000.  I'm willing to bet the particular model they did not like is this one pictured.

I've noticed something about this thread.  Quite often someone will make a post but it will not appear in the thread.  It just bumps the thread and shows on the main feed that ____ replied.  Anyone know why this is?  It appears that the post will not show up until another reply is made.

Update: I used my last reply as an example.  It would not show up in the thread until another post was made.

Wow, I wasn't sure how a mid length could've been made into a BHD build but you did it extremely well.  Nice!

Also, for those of you building these, eBay has been a goldmine for period correct Aimpoints lately.  Besides my own, there have been 4-5 others listed... so make that 8 Aimpoints available right now versus a few months ago when I couldn't find any!

I have been watching this thread for a few years.
Re-read it many times.
I enjoyed it, but I was not going to build one.

Changed my mind.

Ron

Most of the lower parts are on the bench to be put together. I have all the other parts.

I have 2 or 3 more BHD carbines to dig out the parts from storage to build them.

I really didn't plan on doing this, but as I found some parts I just put them in storage for some day. I guess someday got here.
Looks like I need to find some flash lights and mounts.
I think I have some old scope mounts some where. need to find them. Scopes I will need to buy.

Oh man, I can't recall. The moderator indexed over the barrel, which ended right where the flash-hider part started so as to maintain as much muzzle velocity as possible. The barrel length ended up being something funky and the moderator was pinned for 16" OAL. Such a long time ago.

Very nice carbine.  I like the Redi Mag set up.

Cheers

  Agreed.

Thanks, it has an Aimpoint 1000 and 3000 sitting on the shelf.  I have a grease gun sling for it as well.

Great looking transitional carbine.  Love the wear on the receiver extension and the peel washer.  Nice touch.  I built one very similar a few years ago with an AIMPOINT 1000 and C7 upper.  I eventually tore it down to build my M4.  Wishing I hadn't sold my Colt CMB A2 upper with M4 feed ramps last year to build a 727.

I found the pics of mine on page 13 of this thread half way down.  In case you were interested.

More details please.
Throw on a 5000 and that would be a perfect BHD clone.  Well done!

You may have to look close, but those Ops Inc cans are there (along with what also looks like a very early SR-25). Desert Storm?

I wonder why that fart can is so long? Maybe thet where experimenting to find out the point
of diminishing return with suppressors.

Also good find on those pictures.

how exactly are the hose clamps attached to the handguard?

I'm guessing he used the holes in the handguards somehow.

Mr Vickers did a short write-up that showed up on Soldier Systems Daily that included some of this information.
It's a pair of machine screws (and washers) through the handguard holes, held by square nuts on the outside.  The hose clamps have hols cut in them to allow for the machine screw to pass through.
Bicycle tubing keeps the vibration down and the fit tight against the handguard.  That little bump you see on the side is a cobbled-together push switch installed locally and routed underneath the bicycle tubing.

The flashlight is a scuba light that's been painted black, I don't know the model.
