Got a parts kit heading my way but wanted to get some advice for a build and what you think it might cost to finish out a lower for this.

My plan is to order a Nodak 80% partial fence lower. For those who have done one of these builds, what do you think it will cost to have it engraved and anodized?

Story is this all came from the same gun that was a bring back that family found after the owner passed. I tried to see if the lower could be saw cut but I think it has already been disposed of.

I think it will make for a fantastic battle field pick up build. It looks like it has some early features as well as later ones.

Awesome kit!  Did you pick it up locally, or on Gun Broker?  I love the earliest type, rebated, square forge upper & the large pad ejection door.  Can/did the family provide you with the serial number of the weapon that this parts kit came from?

Nice!! I like the "bring back" story... aint no way ever to legally bring one of those back from anywhere... but great score either way.

Nice find! 80% engraved is the way to go, but with some of the issues we have seen with sending off a completed one, you might want to have all of the engraving and finish work done before you finish off the pocket. Then just finish the pocket your self with alumablack or one of the spray on finishes.

If I were you, I wouldn't keep it...

I'm a generous person, so I'll give you $50 to take it off your hands...

No, seriously, great looking kit. I'm very jealous!

Nice score, that is about as good as it gets.  Is the charging handle gray or black?  I love the color of the buffer tube.

Square forge, contour match below the square pad port door. Early gas tube, and buffer tube, edgewater.

You get the shopper of the month award.

I have always done Nodak ready to go lowers. But this may deserve a finished out 80%

You gonna go with XM16E1, partial fence ?
Link Posted: 5/15/2017 8:32:59 PM EDT
[#10]
The best thing you could do is find a demilled XM16E1 magwell that is still intact and have Braceman splice it to the back half of an 80% lower.  Makes it about as close to the original as you can get!  I've done that on several of my builds including an XM16E1.

$135 for Nodak partial fence lower, say $10 for shipping
$70 for engraving by Braceman, $20 for shipping both ways
$85 for anodizing by HKILLER, $20 for shipping both ways

Total: $340, call it a conservative estimate. Shipping costs are roughly what I paid.

Don't know what method you're planning on using to mill out your lower but I went with a 5D Tactical jig and I'd highly recommend it. Yielded beautiful results. The jig with the bits and endmill ran $250. You can cut some costs by getting just the endmill from them and sourcing the necessary size drill bits from a local source for probably cheaper. Note the jig requires you own a trim router and a drill, even a hand drill. Just so happens I already had a trim router and a drill press in my little workshop.

Beautiful score op!

I see Nodak is out of stock on the partial fence 80% lowers with a note they hope to be in stock at the end of the year.

If you're wanting to move forward sooner I'll let you have the one l just bought for their price.  My project got put on hold and it will be at least a year before l can move it forward.  Hit me up if you're interested.

Wow.  Perfect amount of wear as well.... amazing!  I would definitely go the 80% route on this one.

Also, Braceman will also recontour A2 80% receivers as well?  This might give you more options for a receiver.

I know a lot of people like the stencil on the stock, but none of the units I was in ever did that and for the time that I was in the Army, I never saw any others with numbers stenciled on the stock. Of course, I'm just limited to my own experience but all of my rifles, had a rack number behind the charging handle.

What is anyone else's experience on this issue?

Why do you say that?  All of the parts appear to be correct for your early kit.  What are you calling "late features"?

Instagram actually.

A gun guy I have been following for a long time posted it. I asked if he was selling it and he said yes and how much. He texted me a bunch  of pics and I sent him the funds.

More than I have ever paid for a kit before but I don't regret it.

Got my NDS-52 and now I'm wondering if it is actually the most accurate thing to start with.

Should this kit have the holes? The detent breathing hole and the extension retaining cross pin hole?

I'm also wondering if it should have a cross on the take down pin boss?

I didn't get a bolt hold open. What type do you think I need for this build?

Heres some pics of two early XM16E1's. They both have the cross and do not have the front pivot pin oil hole.

Getting the cross on an 80% lower is going to be difficult, it could be laser welded on if you can find someone to do it. Drilling a hole in the partial fence would be easy though.

Looks like a standard bolt catch would be correct.

Sweet kit.  Is the stock a C or D and any markings or ink stamping on the HG heat shields. Cool story.  Shame you couldn't get a picture of the original lower.  That would sure answer all your questions 100% correct.  Lot of real early parts on that one and easy to understand paying more for it.  Guessing seller knew what he had or had checked a bit.

Appreciate you sharing it with us.

I purchased three virttually identical kits as yours a couple of months ago, but mine came with the matching receiver fronts.  They had the same early features and barrel markings as yours, except mine all had small pad dust covers, one had a parked bolt group, and one had a half chrome/half parked bolt group.  All of them were partial fence, and none of them had the "+" or the drain holes in the spring detent housings.  Mine also had early bend gas tubes, but they are stainless.  Have you touched your gas tube with a magnet to be sure that it is a carbon steel tube? I would guess that your rifle was manufactured just before my lowest serial number of 1715XX. Only the very earliest rifles had the "+", the dimpled safeties, and the dimpled pins.  Also, some of the really early XM16E1's had transitional bolt catches.  However, since yours did not have a dimpled safety, it would probably be safe to say that the early bolt catch that came after the transitional is correct for yours (NOT the common later bolt catch).  On the other hand, since you do not know the serial number of the weapon that your parts came from, just add a transitional bolt catch, a dimpled safety, dimpled pins, a type "C" stock, an early "skinny grip" and a "+" to your lower receiver, and a corresponding LOW serial number (the LOWEST serial number that I have seen on an XM16E1 was 115401 and it HAD all of the early features that I just mentioned).

I did a quick search on Google and came across an old thread from here, which has long since been archived as well as a few others. Looks like both versions may be correct.

Here's the 2014 thread: XM16E1 Demilled Receiver, as the OP said at that time though, the receiver is a bit confusing because it has a full fence but is clearly marked as an XM16E1.

I'm definitely be interested in the whether the full fence on an XM16E1 was a transitional thing, once the A1's were in production. That's an interesting thread, I wish it wasn't archived so that further discussion would have taken place.

How long to threads last before being archived?

The full fence was added in January 1967, A1 production started in October 1967.

The full fence wasn't the only improvement added to the XM16E1 during its production run.

Don't forget that you will also need to re-profile the receiver's bolt hold open mounting bosses. The early ones have a "rounded" profile, which nobody incorporates into their forgings these days.

In case your interested, Braceman has an original XM16-E1 magwell that he spliced with an the back half of an 80% lower.  This would make your build about as close to an original as you can get.  If your interested, just reply to this post.
