I was waiting for a while too. I finally bought a green Mountain and it's going to JT for some work.

Brownells has new links to the retro barrels and the old ones are still there showing out of stock.

Try this.

We were notified by the manufacturer that the first batch of 20" A1 1-12 Barrel Assemblies shipped to us yesterday.  These should post on the site next week.
If you'd like to call in your order, our part number is 100-020-999.  Again, they're not in-stock, but you can backorder it if you'd like.

I really appreciated this update. I just got off the phone ordering mine. I look forward to hearing from Brownells in the very near future to get word it is shipping.

If you guys were to offer a 10" carbine barrel, that would be awesome, though, admittedly I don't know how much demand that there would be.

It wouldn't need the flange for the flash hider either.

Please make all of the above in 1/7.

That way I can grab any ole loaded mag and go shooting and not worry about keyholing.

Just a FYI, a 1 in 12" twist barrel will not keyhole or even show poor accuracy with heavier bullets as long as you're not shooting in below-freezing temperatures. Last summer I tried 62 and 75-grain bullet weights in my A1 clone with a 1970's Colt barrel in it, and the accuracy at 100 yards was comparable to the 55gr FMJ I was also shooting.

While the 1 in 7" twist would be more practical for these barrels, given the fact that they're specifically for us retro-heads to not use the original rifling twist would be a shame.

You are correct, these barrels do cost a bit more than the prior versions.  We think everyone will be quite pleased with these barrels from the new manufacturer, who is quite well regarded in the industry.

You, him, myself, and a few others no doubt, would love a 10" carbine 1:12" pencil-profile barrel. I just don't know if there would be enough demand for that barrel spec. for it to be worthwhile for Brownells to sell. There's always the option of sending a longer carbine barrel to a retro 'smithy like Retro Arms Works for shortening to 10", and whatever other work needs to be done (smoothing the FSB flashing).

It's more than the weight, it is also the bullet length.  62 grain lead core bullets will generally stabilize barely in warmer temps.  Like the Barnaul loadings.

M-855, a longer projectile with some lead displaced by less dense steel, will keyhole.

Nato Greentip does keyhole out of an XM177E2 barrel.

I have a question about these new barrels, regarding the handguard cap/front sight base:

On the earlier Brownells retro barrels, the handguard cap was a non-USGI type, which lacked the formed "lip" that fits into the counterbore at the rear of the front sight base. The handguard cap and front sight base were both "flat" at their intersection, just butting-up against each other.

Do these new barrels come with a USGI type handguard cap which has this lip, and by default, the corresponding counterbored front sight base to accept it?

Which is what I'm ultimately going to do, either go with JT or ADCO (they did my 177 cut thread p/w, fsb), but a ready to install bbl would be great.  I'm also entertaining the thought of a DoE build later this year, a bbl for that would be great too.

FWIW, it depends on the A1. This is not the first time I have heard from someone that 62 gr shoots fine in their 1:12 but it seems to be the exception, not the rule. From what I understand, it has more to do with the lead and throat than it does the actual twist rate.

The later 723 barrels were 1:7 and very hard to find - I would like to build a lightweight 723 build with original profile barrel, and 1:7 would be my choice even though I have standardized on 55 gr. ammo except for my Recce.

Brownell's 12.7" barrel is designed to go with their repro moderator and, when pinned & welded, be 16+" overall.  Other barrels and moderators can vary...

We are trying to track down A1 port doors & rear sights, but those seem to be quite difficult to get a hold of.  We're working on it, but don't have an ETA.

We do have tear drop forward assists in-stock HERE.

Here is a five position round front sight kit HERE.

I forgot one more:  A1 selectors without the indicator notch cut into the opposing side.

Model 1 Sales had semi selectors without indicator notch last time I ordered some in November. Item #8. Safety selector, AR15 on this page.

Ok Brownells, since you are listening, here is our retro wish list:

New A1 port doors.  Right now, they are in very short supply.

New teardrop forward assists, DPMS used to make them but the supply has dried up.

Same with the A1 rear sight assembly.  DPMS used to make but has now dried up.

And lastly, the round five position front sight posts.

Those are parts we are scrambling for to complete builds now.

JSE Surplus had teardrop f/a available as of last week...no idea of make/quality..
