Not sure if I'm still dreaming or not, but I have the possibility to build an AR-15 with 6" barrel in 300 AAC Blackout, semi auto only.

I simply love the "Honey Badger" concept and I want to make a copy, as close as possible (or better).

Color would have to be black at this stage, sad but true, but it will simplify things a few hundred percent.

Problem is...I know almost nothing about DIY, but will get help buidling it.

However I need help specifying the right parts.

I am in Europe by the way, which won't help sourcing some of the parts.

Current list is:

Upper receiver: JP Rifles CTR-02
Barrel: Lothar Walther 6" with ½”-28 threads for flash hider.

Lower:

NEA Compact Carbine Stock (CCS)
http://www.theammosource.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=14_288_289&products_id=2177
Stock Assembly, Return/buffer system (5.56mm/.223 cal),Modified bolt carrier (shorter)

Friends, everything is open at the moment and I appreciate any help.

Having read some recent articles and test I find a high number of 300 AAC Blackout ARs that become jam-o-matics...don't want this.

not sure of your laws but are short barrel rifles legal there? here we must be 16" minimum or apply for a tax stamp.
most of the time if your doing a diy build there will be bugs to work out. just the nature of the beast (gas port size/adjustable gas block, buffer weight, suppressed/unsuppressed, ect...)

5/8-24 is the common thread for 300blk.

about as far as I can help. i'm sure others will chime in.

Heja Sverige!

Are you really from Sweden? As someone that has been there a dozen or more times I have a hard time believing you can legally own this....
Link Posted: 4/24/2013 2:31:18 AM EDT
[#3]
Yes, I can legally own this where I am. No tax stamp needed, just the normal fee (€40)

But the gun is semi-auto only, which is fine for me.

I have the "Permit to buy" in front of me, so with all that behind me just need to specify what to buy and don't want to get things wrong.

I can have a barrel down to 150 mm (5.9"), but longer if I want. Not shorter...

Funny enough, lowers are license free here. It's the upper that requires a license. (barrel, bolt, upper receiver all require license to own)
Just read some of your laws around SBR and some of it look silly to me (perhaps to you too) ;)

However I hope we can leave all the legal talk behind. Each county (and state) is different, simple as that.
(If required I can send proof of my permit to a moderator on the forum.)

It's the technical side of things I need help with.

Stuff like:

6" Barrel twist?   1 in 5?
Gas port size?
Adjustable gas block? I have this on my other competition ARs (14-18"), rarely change it but feel it's a benefit when playing with new ammo.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSogDbqpUSg

It says in the text that the HB uses a ported barrel. Is it a ported barrel with a "slip over" suppressor, or?
Not planning on porting the barrel.

[#4]
with a 6" barrel you may get away with 1:8 but a 1:7 would be the fastest i'd go.

gas port size again you can go two route's. one open it up little by little untill it functions best with the ammo you intend to run. or go a little large and use a gas block to regulate. being a 6" I personally would only run sub's so that may help simplify things vs the super/sub capability. also if you reload you can evey taylor your load to make the final adjustments necessary.

not sure what you mean about "ported barrel" (not at a cpu where I can watch the link right now)

I call my 7.5" 300BLK version a Honey Beaver.  Go with 5/8x24 threads for standard 308 mounts.

Thanks for that, jasonusvi. Seen it Before, somewhere on the big web, probably here.

at the name

What is your twist? 1:8?

Very trustworthy sources close to the original Honey Badger have told me to use 1:5 twist?
Any comments?

What's the temperature in the handguard like when you start shooting?

Still not sure if to go as low as 6" or be more sensible and use 7-8"?
Link Posted: 4/26/2013 8:29:32 AM EDT
[#7]
It will much easier to get a 7-8" barrel as I do not think I've seen a 300BLK barrel shorter than that commercially available.

What suppressor are you going to use on this in SWE?

My barrel will be custom anyways, but I guess getting a gas system etc. will make Life easuer if I go 7-8", so I guess that's where I'm heading.

I wouldn't mind buying a complete barrel from someone in the US, but I recon the delivery times will kill me, plus all the hazzle with export licenses etc.

Supressor, don't know yet perhaps Ase Utra or B&T.  Something that can take a lot of heat, like AAC which I guess use inconel?

Doesn'tthe honey badger have an expansion chamber on the barrel before the suppressor? I thought the ATF declared that another suppressor so it was a 3 stamp gun at that point.

The Honey Badger has some kind of ported barrel, and perhaps a "2 stage" supressor. Don't know. Not copying this, as I can't.

I got a spare pistol lower that im starting to gather parts for. I am on a wait list for a 1 in 8 twist 6.5" 300 blackout barrel for now.  the honey badger is the style look im after, as I am only interested in shooting subs. I will find another seekins billet lower to sbr for this down the road. I have interest in the nea stock but there isn't enough solid info on them yet, and I heard troy has a similar stock to be released too.

That's a darn fine rifle you got there, sir.

What upper is that, really likr the charging handle etc.

If you don't mind, please let me know your barrel twist and what sort of performance (distance) you've managed to squeeze of of it?

Where did you get the gas system? Custom or off Brownells?

How hot, and how fast, does the hand guard get? Is this a problem?

Thanks for your help.

Did you check the link?

http://www.lannertactical.com/SUB-RAVEN-AR15.html

"With is ultra compact stock the LANTAC Sub-RAVEN offers the user maximum portability. The stock extends to an impressive 22.0CM (8.66'') from the rear of the receiver when fully deployed. For legal reasons (overall length), the stock system is permanently attached to the lower receiver.
Manufactured from 6063A-T6 Alluminium with hardened steel guide rods and polymer butt pad, the stock can be deployed in seconds to form a robust and effective point of contact.
The anti rotation plate also offers a reenforced, welded, ambidextrous sling mounting point underneath the stock assembly.

Is it possible to buy it separately?

UK Suppliers of Custom AR15 RIfles and AR15 Rifle Accessories..
Is it available in the US?

ETA: pretty sure that Sub Raven is a .22LR, which means that stock probably won't even work with 5.56 or 300BLK.

It's do-able, just a matter of how creative you want to be.

You may be able to use a Gunsmoke-style pistol spring setup, which eliminates the weighted buffer.

i believe the only us distributor listed is troy defense.  i don't think troy is selling just the stocks , i think it only comes on complete guns.  i had no problems ordering from them and they were prompt at returning emails.

What about cutting a 16" CMMG 300 BLK barrel into 6"?

It will be done by a gunsmith, but I have no idea if it's a good idea or not so appreciate your advice.

It will save me a lot of money vs. getting a custom barrel, but if it's an entry ticket to problems I'd like to know.

6" may be too short to run reliably unsuppressed with .300 unless you put the gas block even closer to the chamber than the "pistol" position.
