What kind of accuracy are you getting out of the surplus stuff?  I have the Romanian and accuracy is pretty poor with it.  I use the 10 ½ upper from cncgunsparts.  Works great and is a blast to shoot, but was sure hard to sight my EO Tech in.

I really like the special subsonic rounds. My old Tok carbine with the pistol length gas system shot them super accurate. that is one nice running setup you have. There was another fellow on ARFCOM with a silver lower (home machine project not anodized) just like the one in the videos did you do an 80% lower also?

Sweet!

What mag block are you using?

Is that a 6.8 or 5.45 mag you are using with the ss?

Great Job! Handloads really show the versatility and potential of this round. You ever try this with 5.56 brass? I mocked some up the other day for another project, but haven't tried them yet. 7.62x25 Super?

Thanks for the info.  I have my upper on a registered lower.  My wife was firing at an oil filter I pitched out of the shop.  She got to punching it around a little.  Imagine my surprise when I found a bullet in the filter.  It had to bounce off the ground first as she was tearing up the dirt pretty good.  I was just wondering if it was my gun that was inaccurate, or others had problems with it.

Well, damn, thats a nice piece of work!
I tried sighting mine in this weekend [2.5x and a 4x...nice to know the accuracy issues weren't just me] and that surplus crap just was not zeroing in.

On the other hand, I was having mag issues too, and it was hot, and I got frustrated walking out to the 100 yard mark.

Maybe next weekend.

Mine's a DI.

FYI, Running 7.3 grains of 2400, behind a reversed 150 grain FMJ BT, loaded to .45 ACP length [any longer and the boat tail engages the lands and the bullet gets stuck in the barrel...messy when you try to hand cycle].  Getting 1040 to 1070 FPS out of a 10 inch barrel, and they fit in the stock PPS mags.  I might drop it another tenth of a grain, but I was having trouble getting it to cycle completely with lighter powder loads.

Can those be loaded subsonic?

And anyone have load data with various bullets?

(maybe I will get off my butt and set up my press, plus, I sure could use some more .458S)

The 108s are too light to load down. I would look at 165 on up for subs. Just IM/email me with what your looking for. I have a 300W & only load the tok with these 108s but can run anything through QL.

what gas system are you using? i assume its a 1-8 twist to stabilize the 200 gr projectiles or is it a 1-10? may be a diffrent option for my 300 whisper project, although i am debating wether or not to open it up to .308x39.

One of the things I did, was take some surplus [unsure of origen] and since my dad wanted the 85 grain bullets for his M1 carbine reloading [pulling bullets from surplus is actually cheaper than buying new bullets according to him] I was left with a ton of primed, unloaded brass...which I have been using for my 150 grain load testing.

If you are goin to shoot subsonic with a 1-10 twist, stick with 160-190 gr pills, reason is with temprature variations you can get keyholing when at the edge of your weight limit on that twist with subs. Shot a buttload of subs in my life, i would hate for someone to get a bafflestike. Look for 300 whisper reloading data, may help you with ideas on other powders for your subs also!

Before..it was a no..........but Frank saw the video........think it might of peaked his interest.......I am going to try and maybe push for a limited run of them. Do not know how much of a chance I have of getting it to happen, but trying.

I still don't have a tok upper, but I do have over 4000 rounds of ammo sitting around collecting dust.

I've been holding out for a piston upper.

7.62 Tokerav Video

I really got to ask you about the piston setup. I think I read that you said it was shorter than the normal pistol DI setup –– is this correct? If this is true and you are shooting all the nice cheap corrosive ammo all you really need to clean is the chamber, bore, piston and piston block –– is this correct? The reason I'm asking is, if the piston setup is shorter than a pistol length DI setup, how do you get to the gas block to remove the piston? In the video it almost looks like the gas block for the piston is actually at or close to the end of the carbine handguard which would make it a little longer than a pistol DI system BUT sure would make it easy to clean! It is a really nice setup and I love the suppressed shooting.

Sounds like yo have that gas block right at the perfect place for cleaning! I was wondering if you've thought about using any of the heavy VLD type bullets and try for longer range accuracy like the 7.62 Mini-whisper? I forgot to ask before –– did you have to lighten any components like the buffer or run a buffer spring with less power? I know the piston type systems require less gas volume than DI systems but I was wondering if you were just lucky with picking the gas port location or was there prior work involved.

I did lighten things. I am running a 50% power wolf buffer spring. I removed the weight from the buffer. I also removed weight from the carrier. I was prepared to move the port back some, but was pretty sure I was in the right location. I had some discussion with Marty about this also, since he has had a little experience with doing this as a DI system.

Some may look at it as having to do "heavy" modifications, but am going to build up another SBR lower to be dedicated for this, so the spring and buffer are not a big deal for me.

Yes, will eventually get some VLDs to see what accuracy/range I get with those. I have a lot of projectile/load testing to do on the chrono and for accuracy.

I will say, this has turned into one of my favorite rifles to shoot and load for........I am even starting to design a light weight reflex suppressor for it.

I got one the original Tok DI barrels from Marty. I got it to get into the 7.62 Mini-whisper type thing and all my rounds where hand loads. I loved the bullets ranging from 150 to 168 grains as they shot one hole groups. I got tired of hand loading and wanted to just shoot commercial ammo so I did the same as you and used a lighter power Wolff spring and empty buffer and a lightened carrier. I guess it was the combination of lighter parts and the lower gas pressure but the carbine had about the same recoil as a 22 magnum –– I kinda miss that upper.

This upper is sooooo much fun, not only the surplus, but the variety of hand loads I am doing......gonna try the VLDs also in the near future. I have even decided to let go of the Blow-back barrel and 9mm bolt....I have come to realize, I will not ever shoot it again.........this is one of those uppers/rifles that fit into the category of "I'll be buried with it". only have a couple rifles/pistols that are in that category.

I think any of the gas operated Tok rifles are almost "too much fun". I always seem to be second in line when it comes to Tok uppers –– I got the next Tok blowback right after you got yours from Marty. I got my DI Tok upper right after a fellow on here that goes by JPN. I'm thinking about being next in line for a piston setup although I'm not sure at this point in time I can afford one. Did you have to modify the POF piston system to work with your setup or is it a standard kit? I know some companies make a pistol length piston system.

I'm having allot of fun with my RWX 10.5" upper.

This is a pic from when I first got it.

This is recent at 40m offhand with a PA micro red dot sighting it in.
Polish surplus 7.26x25 and I ran two 36rnd mags that day without a single problem.

thought it was shorter, but think it might be longer. gas port is about 5". the frontedge of the gas/piston block is even with the front of the carbine length rail.

very easy to clean.

Just picked up Hornady and Sierra 220RN today.....those just look like they will do serious damage as sub-sonic projectiles.

That looks like so much fun!

Have you tried any of the Hawks custom bullets?  I have great success with them in the .458 SOCOM and sub loads (500gr RN with the .035 jacket; I get decent expansion to boot).  May be on the expensive side for .308 cal stuff, but if you want heavy bullets with expansion, give them a shot!

How does this do with plain old 147gr FMJBT slugs?

I don't really need another bastard caliber AR upper do I? (Stupid question... I know)

So since I don't need one... How much would I save if I didn't buy one? (Can you see where this is heading?)

Prvi Partizan has a published velocity of 1673fps for the Tokarev JHP load, when fired from a 9.8" test barrel.  Prvi also shows 1722fps for the Tokarev FMJ load from the same 9.8" barrel.  When I chronographed Wolf Gold FMJ from my 5' 1911, it did 1415fps.  This had very low felt recoil compared to the other three types of ammo I have fired through my 1911.

Interestingly, Prvi's 7.63mm Mauser is shown to be 1509fps, from a 5.9" barrel.
