To Our Valued Distributors and Manufacturer’s Representatives:
For more than the past year, Bushmaster has been experiencing - and
enjoying - increased sales and demand for our 5.56mm / .223 caliber. XM15
and Carbon 15 line of products. With these increased demands, we have
decided to discontinue production of our line of .308 caliber rifles, and our
M17S Bullpup, due to limited sales growth potential. We will do our best to fill
any existing open factory orders.
If you have any questions regarding these Bushmaster decisions, please
feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,

Distributor Sales Manager
Bushmaster Firearms, Inc.

Very interesting indeed.  I wonder how much, if any, of the decision is because of the breaking bolts, verses just slow sales.  Either way, this has to be a financial disaster for BM after all the money they must have spent for R&D and very few sales.

increased 223 xm15 sales.........maybe makes up for 308 losses....

Nothing against the AR10; I wish to own one of those as well. However, I also wish to own a Bushmaster 308. Production status is meaningless to me.

I find it rather meaningful to know that I'll have a parts source when things break, but it's your money. <shrug>

Well, thats big news.
I just sold my M17 Bullpup to build my Beowulf, I really like the Bullpup.
I wonder where the prices will go now? May have to pick up another one fast!

Anyone have a link to verify BM is stopping the 308 line?

Replacement bolts that may or may not be as prone to future breakage, with no more R&D going into fixing the problem?

I would find that disheartening as a Bushie .308 owner.

Glad I got mine, I may even pick up another.

I just set this e-mail to bushmaster:

Is it true that you are discontinuing the .308 BAR-10 rifles?

How is this going to affect parts availability?

Thank you.

Probably won't hear back till Monday.

Bushmasters 308  market advantage was use of cheap FAL mags - the end of the AW ban makes reasonable cost new hi-cap mags available again so there is little advantage gettiing a Bushmaster now.

I am glad I didn't pick one up either.  Getting stuck with a rifle with no parts available would suck.

Remember a significent number of the "wear parts" are AR15 - but that doesn't include the bolt, carrier and bbl. - too bad I really like mine. DPMS offers stiff competition price wise at about $500 less and AR10's have been getting more reliable at $200 or so less than BAR10 so I understand the decision.

I am also glad that I bought a DPMS LR 308...it has been reliable and a pleasure to shoot...the accuracy is on par with any bolt rifle I own...sorry to hear that BM will not be continuing the 308 line...I heard good things about the BAR10 as well.

It's true.  Confirmed w/Bushmaster this AM.

Bummer for me, but they said they'll still make the .308 specific parts for some time.

So...looks like I'll be converting to a DPMS .308 sometime in the future.  I go by the arfcomm "rule of twos" and didn't get my second BAR in time...

I got the same from them as well. I think I will go try to get #2 tomorrow. I will wait on the DPMS.

you can buy the new steel 20 round DPMS mags from several sources for around $30.

I have a 24" rifle and am very pleased, just added a RRA 2 stage match trigger, ACE skeleton stock and 10X Super Sniper on an Armalite one piece mount, I wont be bothering with a bolt gun again, the only thing I lack is a swivel stud for a bipod.

The mags work quite well and are very well made, I need a 10 rounder now to block down to 5 rounds for hunting, from a stand (this is most definitely NOT a walkaround rifle) any deer within 500 yards is in trouble, next year it will be getting as much use as my Bushy Varminter for killing woodchucks

I did have one problem with my rifle in a backwards way, it was an 18" fluted rifle when I bought it but hated the carbine gas system and carbine float tube on a heavy bull barrel so I swapped it for a 24" stainless upper, it had quite a few misfires with surplus and handloaded ammo (Winchester and CCI primers) and would occasionally leave a case in the chamber (no ripped rims though), close examination showed the firing pin hole (in bolt face only) was bored slightly off center a few thousandths causing the firing pin to bind and the extractor had a weak spring (this was an early production upper), DPMS gave me their UPS billing info to send it back 2nd day insured on their dime and returned it in less than 2 weeks, since then it has been absolutely perfect.

The Bushmaster is a very nice looking weapon and the more traditional AR styling appeals to me as I find my DPMS a bit too blocky (but loveable), I wouldnt mind haveing one but the bolt issue is troublesome not to mention the cost and now going out of production, maybe one is in my future but certainly not at current prices and esepcially not now.

Sorry for the diatribe.

Well that's good news...still at that price they're about 3x as much as a FAL magazine but that's moot now.

So when will the other AR10 makers start making lots of cheap 20 round mags?
And how bout some 30 rounders while they're at it!

Well, I said screw it and bought another one. 20" A3 on the way.

I shot the shit with the guy at the gun shop, and he thinks that they are only temporarily halting production so that they can re-work the production. He said that it was not so much lack of demand but rather production costs that were hurting .308 line. He thinks that it will be back as it is a great rifle. He also said that parts won't be a problem.

Never.  No .308AR manufacturer has ever made cheap mags.

I don't see them coming back under the present market outlook. They cost too much for Bushmaster to make give limited numbers and DPMS products.  I have not had a problem with mine, bolt or otherwise, so I am planning to buy a parts to make up a kit for those specific to the BAR10.

Wow... didn't last long!
I never bought one because I didn't like their set-ups. I wanted a true FS etc... and had hoped they'd sell many parts like the AR15. I did like the idea of FAL mags though. Back to the AR10.
In view of so many AR mfd'd lowers and uppers available, are BM sales really going up?

You guys forget that the Bushmaster 308 takes 30rd L4A1 mags which is one major advantage over the other 308 semis.
I am happy I have mine and if you are selling your cheap let me know..........
