May be a dumb question, but no such thing as dumb questions on ARFCOM after all. With the obvious help of some insertable magwell implement, can a mil-spec AR lower be made to accept non-rotary magazines?

No Ruger mags in AR-22s. I like blackdog.

Blackdog magazines with steel feed lips.

Different format & receiver dimensions so that is a NO GO Ghostrider...

A Mil-Spec AR-15 lower with a .22LR upper (or .22LR BCG device) just doesn't work with Ruger 10/22 magazines.

I could see designing a lower that has a magwell for 10/22 mags, but it would be dedicated, and look sorta like the Geoff Herring/Cryostructure M249 cut lower

Perhaps a STEN like side feed upper and respective bolt assembly?  Somewhat similar to the Fleming .22 uppers for the MAC platform.

Buy a Ruger SR22 or SR10/22.

I have a couple different .22 conversion units for AR's, a dedicated .22LR almost always works far better.

[The most reliable .22 conversion, surprisingly, for me, is the USGI M261 with the .22LR inserts used in 20 round old GI mags. I run that in an old 20'' Colt GI upper with a 1/12 twist.]

Use a Catch 22 adapter & run  15-22 magazines FTW
