Today when I was taking apart a new LMT M16 BCG. It appears that LMT has started to mark their bolts with "MPI" (see below pic). The other interesting thing is that the extractor has a Crane O-ring in it. Knowing that LMT has contracts with Crane it leads me to believe they put the Crane O-ring in there per their contract requirement.

I got both the LMT semi and M16 BCG last month, do you know if they did it to the semi bolt also?
Is there a way of looking at the O-ring without taking apart the extractor? |

I have some new AR15 BCG's coming next week and I will check. I bet the bolts are MPI marked, but doubt they will have the O-ring. Taking the extractor apart is VERY easy. C4 |

I just checked mine, no joy. My M16 nickle plated bolt don't have the O-ring, just the regular coil spring. Same with my semi bolt that is F marked.
Where could we buy these O-rings, will they be available soon or could it be purchased directly from LMT? Thanks. |

WHEN I WENT TO ADD AN O-RING TO A NEW LMT F/A BCG THIS WEEK, I NOTICED THE SAME.
THE CORRECT O-RINGS COST $.06 EACH BY THE THOUSAND. OF COURSE, YOU HAVE TO GET THE RIGHT SIZE, MATERIAL, AND DUROMETER HARDNESS. A BAGGIE OF THEM MAKES A NICE ADDITION TO A KIT HEADED OVERSEAS. IT'S NOT THAT THEY WEAR OUT... YOUR MATES WITHOUT SUCH WILL BE VERY APPRECIATIVE. MY NEW AR-10 CAME WITH THE SAME O-RING INSTALLED, BUT I UNDERSTAND ARMALITE HAS BEEN MAKING THESE SIX CENT RELIABILITY UPGRADES FOR SOME TIME. THEY MAKE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE IN A 10.5" UPPER WITH A STOCK EXTRACTOR SPRING. WES GRANT M.S.T.N. |

If all the new bolts coming out of LMT are MP marked, the question becomes are they MP testing each and every bolt or sample testing a few then marking the whole batch?

"I" most likely stands for "Inspected" / "Inspection" etc. As in "Magnetic Particle Inspected" - the whole point of the magnetic particle process is, after all, to inspect for certain flaws in the part not visible to the naked eye in a non-destructive manner. LMT may have chosen to use MPI (vice C, MP, F, etc) to differentiate their bolts from other manufacturers such as Colt, FN, etc that also mark their parts after mag. particle inspection. There was a fairly recent thread on the Crane extractor o-ring and those who found a good sub. Seems a standard viton worked pretty darn good and the cost like pennies each. All government M4's now come with this feature. I bet the reason LMT is now sending out bolts that are marked is they have enough Govt. contract work that requires these markings and they dont need any confusion in product line.

My thoughts exactally. When we sign off the Maintenance Action Form (MAF) for Naval aviation maintenance, we always state that the Magnetic Particle Inspection was performed, such as "MPI performed, no defects noted". Tom

I just got a semi LMT b&bc assy. Mine is not marked other than an "F" stamped into the bolt. No "O" ring! Purchased from a vendor on the EE.
I'd like to find a bulk source for the correct "O" ring. I don't feel comfortable putting the Lowe's/Home Depot ten in a bag "O" rings in duty weapons! |

I think you'll find the "plainness" of this o-ring would probably be surprising. I'd bet it's a bit more than Home Depot/Lowes quality, but it likely nothing more than a mil-spec o-ring meant to be used in some hydraulic component. |

I have some new LMT AR15 BCG's coming next week so I will see if they are like the M16 BCG's. If they are not then I would be led to believe that LMT is only doing this (marking the bolts and including the O-Ring) for their .Mil contracts (which require the M16 bolt carrier). C4 |

Follow-up..
I went through my entire batch of bolts (was a lot) and some of them have the MPI markings and others do not. This makes me wonder if the ones I got (that were stamped) were destined for a .Mil contract that required it. C4 |
